Reflectve side is not the bottom side. You have to sit on that side so it reflects the heat your body emits. This aluminized surface is less durable and is never to be used as a "bottom side".
"The yellow side uses this tougher foam, enduring the rigors of the backcountry while providing a barrier between you and the cold ground. The softer silver side is more comfortable and supportive. This side is silver because it uses our ThermaCapture finish, reflecting radiant body heat back to you." Pulled this from Thermarest, in case a reference is needed.
Thank you for clarifying. I am aware of the differences although I did not demonstrate properly in the video. I don't sit on the reflective side in the video because I don't want the extra heat in my warm apartment. In the field, I would use with reflective side up in colder conditions and reflective side down in warmer conditions. But I'm not sure if it makes a noticeable difference. Both pads help insulate from cold ground, although under controlled conditions, the Z-Seat is probably technically warmer.
If you use the seat in the winter on the snow in wet leaves or dirt go for the larger z seat. Your dry but will thank you. I use it for hunting in the worst of weather, it’s worth the extra $.
Lol, it's like 5 times more comfortable than the foam sit pads, if that's what you're looking for. I actually use the V seat around the house and car camping.
You’ve sold me!!! I’ve been trying to decide which sit pad I wanted. Definitely the Thermarest Z Seat. Unfortunately everywhere in Australia is out of stock. Have you tried others and have a second favorite?
Soon after I made this video, many people informed they couldn't find the z-seat for sale anywhere. Besides the ubiquitous generic foam pad, the other name brand pads all are heavier. So I don't really know.
Oh it’s good to know it’s not just Australia missing out again. The Exped sit pad flex is only 50g and has some decent reviews so might give that a go until the Z seats are available again.
It might be too hot if you use it in summer by reflecting too much body heat back to you. With the foam pads, you can put the reflective side facing down to reduce the reflection of body heat.
Great stuff. Enjoyed your delivery with your personality shining through.
thanks, I'm Mr Personality Plus over here
Honestly, I was actually looking for a review like this.
Lol, Phenomenal, that's why I make these videos
Great video mate.. Just the info I needed. Thankyou! Very much appreciated
Thanks for the doing the review.
You’re awesome dude, keep it up.
Thanks, doing what I can.

If a pad has a high r value does it mean it’s not that good for summer?

Cannot find anyone selling the Thermarest.
Yea, unfortunately, they seem to have stopped selling it. Not sure why. On the bright side, there are plenty of cheap alternatives now.
Yay ! I made the 10th comment slot !!
