I would imagine that it’s for one of two reasons.
      1) the game was coded in such a way that you were not meant to get a 20 win streak and the death was included as a fail safe.
      2) the developers included the death to encourage the player to do something other than sit there and gamble all day.

Back in the day cheat codes were usually just used to test and debug the game while it was being developed. Once they became somewhat mainstream knowledge they became sort of silly with giant heads and low gravity. Nowadays it's hard to find new games with cheat codes.

Developers/Game allows the AI to cheat to gain an unfair advantage.
Player uses cheats because AI cheated first.
Developers/Game punishes the player for cheating despite the fact that the game cheated first.
Whoever decided this as okay needs to be beaten with a metal pipe.

Simple, it's bait for the trap, to see if you know the cheat if you will use it. Some developers are aware people will cheat and abhore it since it takes away from there creation. So instead of just not implementing cheats cheat devices exist they implement cheats as bait for players while games that offer you legit cheats and punish you for old cheats is pretty much punishing you for not doing your research to see what the new cheats are.

    Why
    Why?
Why do people keep considering Donkey Kong 64 to have anti cheating measures...
The game.. Or any game can and will break if u save with cheats on, and that's not a anti cheat measure lol. And this has been proven by data miners. And if this is the case, then why isn't GTA SA on this list when leaving cheats on then saving can break a save file?

    • @NEEDbacon
      @NEEDbacon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Fatacemcafee That actually would still be dangerous as the one that causes the Madd Dogg bug doesn't care if the cheat was turned off. If you use the Pedestrian Chaos cheat, it messes with the code so that Madd Dogg's script breaks and isn't turned back on so he walks off regardless.
Which ties in to why most likely DK64 breaks like it does. If you don't know they shipped it with the expansion pak cause there was a memory leak that cause the game to crash after a few minutes without it. So given that it was so jank to require hardware, honestly not surprised a gameshark doesn't play well with it.

    • @Fatacemcafee

@@NEEDbacon Oh yeah, the chaos cheat is one of the cheats you don't wanna use and save after regardless cuz it perm locks certain AI, which breaks Madd Dogg lol.

  • @AmyraCarter
    @AmyraCarter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Donkey Kong 64 is one of those games that is a heavy reminder that using cheat codes whilst using a data save and restore feature can have unintended results. Also, that thing with Banjo-Kazooie, it actually doesn't delete the save contents, only the save header, it's a fake delete since that type of thing is difficult to program while the game is actively running the data on the save files. Without the header, the save files are unusable, but restoring the header will make them usable once more. This deletion/corruption of save files by removing/changing the save header is mitigatable, but a chore to do nonetheless.
Oh, I should mention that one can use no clipping in Ken Silverman's game, to get out of that trap. However, you have to clip through walls before being boxed in since no clipping doesn't apply to objects in that particular engine. You also still have to manage to get to the end of the level because the game will try to box you in after using no clip. However, if you do manage to make it through, the check resets, and it'll be like nothing ever happened.
Save scumming is kinda dumb, but I don't blame people who feel that they need to figure things out and that's the method that works best for them. You know, to each their own, but implementing a save count and flag timer to discourage it, that's just one hundred percent, a dick move. Period.
'quicken' as a cheat code? Yeah, it's a stab at the old and dated accounting software and formerly software company by the same name. Nowadays, they're a shady-as-fuck bank and loan company, greedy and avaricious as the rest of them fuckers. They can sit and spin. On a *_pike_* for all I care.

Tiny Tank for the PlayStation had a level where your turret and the enemy's turret are exchanged, so you're controlling your body with the enemy's turret on it, and your turret on the enemy's body. If you've used the invincibility cheat, you can no longer damage the enemy. And if you use the invincibility code up to this level and then save so you can reset the console to turn it off, your save file is corrupted.

This is like only letting the player only play for 2 hours a day, like when I buy a game I expect to be able to play it however I want and do whatever I want with it, but when I get punished for cheating it's almost like being scammed. As many of you might know, despite the fact that the Konami Code was popularized by Contra, it originally debuted in Gradius I, where it would give you all power-ups at once. Naturally, people would try to do the same thing in Gradius III, except that in this game, the Konami Code just causes ol' Vic Viper to explode.

In Link's Awakening on both the Game Boy (Regular, Color and Advance) and the Switch, periodically you have to go to the shop at Mabe Village to purchase items that you need to continue your quest. You can either buy them or try to steal them from the shop. If you try to walk out without paying the shopkeeper will tell you to put it back. However if you run circles around the shopkeeper and make him look the other way you can get away scot free or so you think. You soon find out that everyone is calling you "THIEF" for the rest of the game and the game itself will call you out with this quote: "Guess what? You got it for free. Are you proud of yourself?". If you should at any point return to the shop for the bow you just shoplifted, you will find nothing but an enraged shopkeeper that will instantly kill you, also on the switch version this will really screw up your save file.

Ok. For all you ppl asking "why punish people for cheating in SP game".
Gotta remember for the time frame most of these games came out, *multiplayer just didnt exist*. Like, it just wasnt a concept.
There was couch co-op, and LAN, and the rare game that could handle direct modem link where you could play with one friend. Usually laggy and buggy as hell, too.
    99% of games were SP.
Multiplayer didnt exist, so there was no SP/MP distinction.
And the answer as to why, its funny as hell. Basically the devs trolling you, or you could troll your friends getting them to put the codes in.
Also, what EEH failed to mention, is back then it was really common for sequel games to have odd reactions when you put in the previous games cheat codes. But they also had their own cheat codes that actually worked.

Here is one that I don't think people know about. In the video game sword of Vermilion, equipping a cursed sword will lower your attack every time you remove it. However, if you do this enough times, your attack power Skyrockets. This allows you went to pretty much Breeze through the entire game, killing everything including bosses in 1 hit. There is just one problem...
... the final boss becomes unbeatable. His second form gains unlimited health if you have enacted this cheat. This could be one of the worst cases of punishing You for Cheating because other games give you a warning and oftentimes will punish you Midway through the game, but this one waits till the very last fight to punish you. If you want to see the games ending, you have to go through the entire game and defeat everything in your path fair and square.
Now, I do not know for certain if this is a problem in the original game, since I encountered this in the Sega Genesis classics compilation for modern consoles. Still, it's interesting to know.

Devs judge you for cheating in a singleplayer that's understandable, but what's not is that some of them are not doing anything about cheating in multiplayer.
For an example: In MW2's map Fuel there's a rock that you can get inside which is unfair because no one will be able to kill you but you can. You know what would be nice? Is that if the devs decided to update the game and set a death zone inside that rock as a message to those cheating scums to play fair and stop cheating.
Now I know that's an old game, but I'm pretty certain that there are some glitches that are considered cheating in recent games and their developers are not doing anything about.

  • @danieltaylor4185

Messing with a save file for cheating strikes me as overkill. For piracy, I understand (see Earthbound) but just for cheating? That's way too much. Players are just going to cheat; it just comes with the territory. Though, I suppose that's _one_ way to ensure that cheaters can't finish the game without doing it legitimately, I think there's better ways to handle it.
I will admit though, stopping the player from save-scumming on RNG stuff is a good thing. I think that it should be more common to find than just a few examples.

Freezes are often unrelated to anti-cheat.
Usually it's the person having written the cheat screwing up with something at some point.
For example unlocking everything in Smash Bros. Brawl with a cheat, will cause it to hang in the PAL version,
because the code that checks for unlocks tries to unlock things that don't exist.

There are some missions where the car has a health meter and when it is depleted the car is destroyed promptly ending the mission. One would think to use the health code but the game devs were ready.
