Their 40+ year friendship is just as beautiful as this song with both of them singing it! They did this song together a few times live, but this one is by far is my favorite! My favorite performance of just Kenny is the official video of this song, from one of his concerts... with his silver fox hair and beard, and a cream-white suit with a butterfly collar... looking and sounding so very sexy! My favorite solo performances of this song from Lionel are definitely the 3 times I saw him live! How blessed are we to have these videos to remember all of this great music?!?!?
In a later interview, Lionel adds to the story, making it even funnier. He said the 1 word he had was actually "Baby", but when he & Kenny met for the very 1st time, Kenny kept going on & on about his wife, repeatedly calling her “a Lady”, so when Kenny asked the name of the song, Lionel blurted out “Lady.”
LOL - the 'full video' is a whole concert of Lionel & country music greats. But, yes, there's a longer version of this clip where Kenny tells the backstory. 🙂
Spoiler alert! Below Comments tell you to see full video then they tell you the whole funny stury! Bottom line Lionel dud not have time to write a song Kenny reiterates it's gonna be on a GREATEST HITS ALBUM probably Sale 2MILLION COPIES! This is from Rolling Stone mag "As the 1980s began, country superstar Kenny Rogers was fast becoming that genre’s most successful pop crossover artist. In September 1980, after a streak of major hits helmed by producer Larry Butler, Rogers enlisted songwriter Lionel Richie, of the Commodores, to write him a song. “Lady,” also produced by Richie, would soon become the biggest hit in Rogers’ solo career and one of the best-selling songs of the decade."
@Marc Poindexter Lionel did write Lady for Kenny & Lionel did not record it 1st. In the full vid (link below), Kenny says he called Lionel, to write a song for his upcoming album. When they met for the 1st time, Lionel had just 1 word, “Lady” & a bit of melody, which had been rejected by the Commadors, 6 months later, in the studio, Kenny recorded the 1st verse, asked where the 2nd verse was, & found out that Lionel was in the toilet, writing the rest of the song. In a later interview, Lionel adds to the story, making it even funnier. He said, the 1 word he had was actually “Baby”, but when they met, Kenny kept going on & on about his wife, repeatedly calling her “a Lady”, so when Kenny asked the name of the song, Lionel blurted out “Lady.” Link; th-cam.com/video/vc8IN-FnRic/w-d-xo.html
You were so right when you said, “the brotherhood is strong”. They loved and admired each other for over 30 years. Kenny was a tremendous loss to us all, and I’m sure Lionel feels his absence every day. 😔 Thank you for your insightful reaction.
Trust me, they rehearsed it. That doesn't take away the talent or sincerity we saw in any way, but when the cameras are running, nothing happens that wasn't planned and rehearsed.
These 2 ICONS standing there singing one of the greatest love songs ever! The world needs more if this, especially now. 2 true brothers beside each other as 1. There's no skin color to talk about. Just BROTHERS that truly care for each other and just happen to be 2 of the greatest musical talents of all time. Love man. We need this Love. ❤❤
This was a concert of country music stars paying tribute to, and singing the songs of, Lionel Ritchie - some were duets with him. Kenny Rogers' Lady was the grand finale.
@@DanielFrost21 When I was a young girl in the late 70's early 80's when I heard "Brick House" playing I knew my mom was cleaning house haha. Time to go outside for a few hours
Kenny was someone that helped everyone around him. I remember another musician spoke of advice he received from Kenny. "Remember to be mindful of how you treat everyone on your way to the top. Because you are going to see them again on your way back down"
A great diet to is Lionel and Shania Twain singing Endless Love. Lionel helped her get her confidence back after she'd lost her voice due to Lyme's disease and had surgery and therapy to get it back. There's 2 videos 1 is by Shania on her journey to get her voice back and it shows when she goes to his house to record, she wasn't sure she could do it, but he was since he's had a similar experience. It's so sweet then there's official video of the duet.
Lionel wrote this song for Kenny. This was a show honoring Lionel! Kenny showed up to sing it with Lionel to thank him because it really sent Kenny's career into orbit!!!🚀
So miss this era. Lionel and Kenny were true wonders. The lyrics, the singing, the melody, the passion, meaning, the feels. Both men... legendary status forever. Great reaction! Keep up the great work!
I used to work in radio and met dozens of famous musicians. I spoke to Lionel Richie twice and he was perhaps the friendliest one I ever met. My colleagues, even ones who didn't like his music, thought so too. Awesome guy.
The love these guys had for each other was so evident on this video. Incredible friendship. Find Jennifer Nettles and Lionel doing “Hello” from the same special. Amazing.
Lionel Ritchie. "Sail On" Kenny Rogers "just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in". And "lucille". And "Ruby don't take your love to town"
Just imagine how many women swooned to this song. How many couples have this song as "their song". How many times it's been played at weddings. It's a testament to the work of both singers who are that talented.
I got 4 cassette tapes for my 6th birthday and Kenny Rogers was one of them. One of the greatest voices to ever live. But there is so many great voices. Lionel Richie is another greatest voices to ever live. We are the World, that had so many great voices, it is still unbelievable today, and I remember that since I was kid.
And, amazingly, that was the first time they had ever sung it together - they did not record the song together. Some deejay had taken Diamond and Streisand's two separate recordings of the song and created a duet. And it became a smash hit.
One of the most underrated songs by Lionel Richie is "Still in love" released in the 90s, it's not the song he released called Still but the one in the 90s called Still in love, awesome song !! Love this reaction to both of these legendary singers together
The beginning of this video is one of the greatest stories ever. Their relationship is the definition of “brotherly love”. It also shows that true love is colorblind
Oh Jamel- there’s a slightly extended version of this very performance- Lionel is just in the audience and Kenny tells the story of Lionel writing, and being in the bathroom at one point- Their banter is priceless! THEN.. he invites Lionel to come onstage with him- I’d love for you to see the full version and what led Lionel onstage with him- you see even more how close they are- and the joking around.. In the video for "We Are The World", you see them standing right beside each other, and that was how many decades ago?!?!
I have always loved Lionel Ritchie’s voice and his music. Kenny’s voice was unique and beautiful as well. Nice to see they had a wonderful friendship. RIP Kenny.
Kenny and Lionel were best friends until Kenny died. Lionel Richie originally titled this song "Baby", but Kenny misunderstood him, and said, "Lady?", and Lionel was like, "Um...Yeah!"

Thanks for doing what you do and sharing it. You have the gift of REALLY hearing with all of you.
RIP Kenny. I remember him from his First Edition days. “Just Dropped In” was a part of psychedelic rock beginnings. That would be a great one to react to Jamel 😉
Yes! Kenny with the First Edition! My Dad loved Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town. Grew up listening to all those early songs. They were great! Have the greatest hits LP around here somewhere that my folks had. I always liked The Condition my Condition Was In, or whatever the hell the song was called! Lol. He had the late 60's look, tinted shades, long hair, , but still the great story teller of song! So many hits. Something's Burning and But You Know I Love You were awesome songs.
Kenny Rogers had his own group when I was a teenager... Kenny Rogers and the first edition... One of their hits that I really liked : I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in....
Did that version have the part where Kenny tells the story about how that song came about. If have not look for it great story. Kenny and Lionel did some great things together. And as you could tell became life long friend's.
