  • Born in Hungary in 1560 Countess Bathory was a noblewoman who, with her son, two sons-in-law and several female helpers, got young girls to come to her castle on the pretext of finding them work and then tortured and killed them. She was eventually found out and died virtually walled up in her castle. It is claimed that she killed 600 victims, making her the most prolific female serial killer of all time. A myth grew up that she bathed in her victims' blood to stay young, a fact used in the horror film 'Countess Dracula', starring Ingrid Pitt, one of the programme's talking heads.
    British crime writer, Martina Cole, examines the life and times of six of the most notorious female serial killers across history and asks: why do women kill and why are we surprised when they do? Each programme tells the story of an individual killer with expert analysis and dramatic reconstruction.

    Isn't there evidence of Bathory suffering from epilepsy as a child, one of the treatments in that time period being placing the blood of a non epileptic on the lips. I thought this was the origin of the "bathing in blood" trope

    • @haleyguthrie3113
      @haleyguthrie3113 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes, At the time, symptoms relating to epilepsy were diagnosed as falling sickness and treatments included rubbing blood of a non-sufferer on the lips of an epileptic or giving the epileptic a mix of a non-sufferer's blood and piece of skull as their episode ended.
      BUT, it's a fact that her family had sexual deviances as well. She was pregnant and gave birth at 13. There are over 12 family members and servants that said the father was a young servant boy that miraculously disappeared soon after. This was documented long before her marriage.
      Her husband was also, as mentioned, has quite a bit of evidence of sadistic sexual deviances long before his marriage as well. Including polyamory relationships. His uncle and nephew were open about the fact they were in polygamist relationships. Although unthinkable in their day, people have been in loving and caring polyamory relationships for thousands of years in a society that welcomed that. I think her husband and her were in a loving relationship with the 3 or 4 "servants" but couldn't be open about it. Hence why she only wanted female victims, which could be viewed as perhaps a rule from her husband. 🤔 The official investigation did include those servants testifying saying this exact thing. Equal loving relationships. BDSM and Sadism are much more common than anyone wants to admit.
      As a hole, from her childhood on, the psychology of this lady does in fact support text book BDSM and Sadism relationships. I think it started with the epilepsy from childhood for sure. The most compelling evidence is the behavioral aspects we know of and were documented that no one would recognize back then.
      My personal opinion...I think its half truths and blown out of proportion.

    Truthfully, we have people like Rosemary West and Myra Hindley nowadays, it’s not too hard to imagine someone with power wreaking havoc in those days when people really didn’t have rights. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle of innocence and guilt, but I find it interesting we feel doubt accepting the tale as true. Torture was normal. That alone says so much. It was a very different world. Really well made documentary. I love Ingrid Pitt but I think, she’s seeing through overly sympathetic eyes. I hope it wasn’t true, for the sakes of the victims and for everyone involved. But…I can see it.

    Hello Ingrid! There are some court records that survived. She was investigated by the law, so she was doing some things very wrong. It may have been exaggerated over the years but she wasn't a good person to say the least. There are written documents explaining some of it. She was shut up in one of her castles or walled in a room in a castle to starve to death depending on who is telling it. But she couldn't have lived 4 years being starved to death. Just locked in her house/room for the remainder of her life. She wasn't tried and executed outright because she was a noble woman. Which is BS but of the times I guess. History certainly is not full of fairness and justice for rich people much like today.

      She was never charged. There's evidence her children, who believed her to be guilty, conspired with the palatine not to give her a trial so as to preserve their family name. This is backed by letters between the palatine and the children, as well as the palatine and the kind, and representatives of all three of the children being with the palatine already when they arrested Báthory. Letters confirm the children and the palatine agreed to imprison her before he ever went to make the arrest. After all of the parties theoretically interested in gaining her land when she died were already dead, her son wrote that the servants were burned at the stake for being accomplices to Báthory in the torture of girls in _Chronicle of Castle Csejethe._

    While I enjoyed this video, I must say that I was expecting something better, it left me with a lot of unanswered questions. There didn't seem to be much analysis and questioning of the so called "facts". Starting with the fact that it seems impossible that someone could kill young women at a rate of about one every three weeks for thirty years. For me, this alone puts everything else in question. So many things should be examined more closely, like missing documents. Any worthwhile investigation should closely examine any documentation or lack there of. I guess this investigation just didn't do enough to separate fact from fiction.

    • @marniekilbourne608
      @marniekilbourne608 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have heard in other shows that things were exaggerated over the years but she was at the very least abusive and cruel to her servants. It had to be beyond that for the King to order an investigation though however late to the game he was. I guess we'd have to read the court documents that survived for ourselves. I wonder exactly how much of the truth was included even in those. They wouldn't want to admit a noble person would do something like that.

The family arranged it so she would be unofficially punished and the lands would be retained in the family.

  • @alisontheanimal4009

    I found this episode more poorly researched then the others. I mean you literally use the destruction of paperwork as evidence that her crimes must have been so horrific they had to be hidden from the public, where as it seems just as likely that her family covered everything up because they wanted her money. The evidence that this was a conspiracy against her is much stronger then it is presented in this documentary (which contradicted itself on several occasions.) This was supposed to be a true crime doco and I was left really disappointed at the wilful lack of research in favour of following a more fanciful story. Overall a really bad job. I would be ashamed to have anything to do with this piece of trash.

    • @ArizonaAngelEyes
      @ArizonaAngelEyes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same here. Any research I've done as a complete amateur points to a conspiracy. And the statement in the end that there's been no comprehensive study of why women kill is utterly laughable. Saying that such studies haven't been done because society thinks that women aren't capable of such cruelty is the result of a feminist sticking stubbornly to the stereotypes about women they claim to be false. It's willful ignorance of actual expert reseach that is contrary to the crime writer's opinion.

The Habsburgs took the wealth of all the nobles of Hungary, who didn't want to serve them, who didn't want to become german, who didn't want to become roman-catholic and give tjeir money to the roman church, who didn't want to serve Rome and the jesuits! When the Habsburgs took the land and wealth of the hungarian noble families, they gave the majority to the Roman catholic church, and the rest to the foreign nobles, who were brought here by Habsburgs, given hungarian names and become the new nobles. But these new nobles were cruel to the peasants, they took away the freedom of the peasants! These new nobles were mostly german and austrian, or other nationalities, who served the Habsburgs. The truth is that Anna needed to eat, and that's why her mother Elizabeth killed so many young girls in the town. Well. Vampyres. Otherwise she was pretty interested in some magick evidenced by her letters.
    Not many people know that about Elizabeth, but Anna gets pretty upset when people call her the blood mistress.
    Yeah well Anna? You didn't have to kill kids did you? No. Except the vampyres decided to do it anyway and not all of them are bad.
    Animal blood not good enough? They also like to send their lackeys on you to threaten you too if you get too involved with their shit. One of our people got threatened one time. I don't know they're over sensitive about things. What can I say?
    If anyone thinks they don't exist they're deluding themselves.

    Everyone has the ability to kill. It is a matter of motivation. That might be greed, hatred, madness, revenge, misguided loyalty, being evil, self defense, jealousy etc. It has nothing to do with race, gender, age, ethnicity, country, wealth or lack thereof. Women seem to be a bit more quiet and sinister about their intent so they may pretend to be good. Maternal instinct will not prevent a woman from killing you. If that was true a woman would never kill her own children but unfortubately that happens too.

    "...over 500 years later"? No. Do the math. The hostess was totally ill-equipped to manage this subject. On a historical show, how did they fail to catch that blunder? She mentions her being a feminist, as if that's relevant, but she should focus more on her basic math.

    such a violent time all over, really she probably was so cruel to the young girls that many died of the cruelty, like iron hot on the jas ad disease and endless things she diem \, they meant nothing in the life of a noble anywhere int he place, and so legend grew really to silly to have statement that did this bare hands, to the throat, it was just abject cruelty probably that was acceptable, like the legend of dracula, stupid to believe this
