She didn't just tell the child to be quiet on the tape, she told her to shut up or she'll hit her again. She remained silent for 20 YEARS about the body's locations until she was convinced it was the only way she might get parole, which was also the reason she cut off contact with Brady. She was no different to him.

She only confessed to the two other murders 20 years later after Ian Brady confessed first, if she had really changed she would of came forward sooner and on her own and not to benefit herself for parole. She also never told the location of Keith Bennetts grave to his family she took that to hers. And if she was "changed" and truly sorry for what she had done she would of accepted her sentence!

My heart goes out to Winnie Johnson, the mother of Keith Bennett. She must have lived a life of agony not knowing where her son's body was, I hope she is at peace and is with Keith now where they can be together. RIP to you both.

@velveteyes79 I didnt know that Hindley showed remorse. I heard that she had become a Christian convert,but not that she had written to the victims parents. I agree some sort of resolution is needed in the lives of the families. Another example is the mother of Jamie Bulger,who still cannot accept that those boys were very troubled children at the time of the murder,so shouldnt have been given a whole life term.Its difficult,because nobody knows how they would react in that situation unless it happened to them.

Yeah, that tells me everything I need to know about her, and I'm more convinced that she wasn't just a 'sweet, innocent girl' who was manipulated by Ian Brady, but that she was just a psychopath who either enjoyed killing or felt apathetic on the matter.

I've often wondered how authorities would react, as I've also thought about going to Saddleworth Moors and digging for little Keith myself. That of course is if little Keith was buried there, something could have happened resulting in Keith's body being placed elsewhere or something.

Nowadays it's much different, a child is officially a missing child right away from reporting. I believe its 48 hours missing for an adult to be classed as a missing person.

Actions are put in motion by authorise immediately as well. The 48h factors only indicates statistical crime data on the majority of MPs in the UK, who are often safely return within that period. I am so tired of hearing people say Myra wouldn't have done it if she hadn't met Ian Brady. Well I have to say I knew Hindley well in the 70's when I was a Prison Officer. She was sly, manipulative, and probably the most vile person. She walked around that wing in the prison as if she was Queen Bee. Some say that once she was separated from Brady, Myra became her old self. I saw how Myra behaved. She was very vicious, although she didn't actually attack anyone who upset her, you can bet that person would suddenly get beaten up. Hardly matters how much we learn about the effects of a horrible childhood on the adult they become... nor does understanding mental illness... if there is no one that does anything about it the outcome will then always be the same... we have to 1. Focus more on rehabilitation then revenge when dealing with non violent victimless crime 2. Focus more on children that pass through family court . 3. Focus more on mental illness healthcare..... we found out the awful things happening in mental institutions and they just all shut down as if people no longer needed treatment.... instead of facilities doing better they just shut down which says a lot about those running them!
She knew it was wrong and did it anyway, whether for personal gratification or merely to appease her lover. Her remorse would have been more convincing had she revealed the locations of the graves.
Winnie Johnson the mother of Keith Bennett passed away in 2012. She faced Brady starve himself so he could die and promised to tell her where her son was buried. She died in 2012 without ever finding her son. She was well known and loved around gorton. The search for her son was called off in 2009. She tried to raise money to open the search again but didn’t pan out. RIP angel ❤️
My heart went out to her. All she wanted was to be able to bury her son and Brady refused to tell her where he had buried her son. I doubt that at the end Brady could even remember where he had buried the boy. He just enjoyed the pain he was causing his mother.

Had she never met Brady, she may not have acted on her dark impulses but I believe they were always there and Brady brought them out of her. You can’t do those things without having it in you to begin with.

Nobody protrayed Diane Downs as "fragile" for killing her children, she was rightfully called out for what she was. its to do with the situation.. in this case, Brady was the dominant one who performed the vile acts, by callng Myra out to be "just as bad" when she didn't do the acts makes the vile acts he did, not as significant.. how can she be worse when he's the one who did it? YES they were both evil but he was more as he performed the acts. He influenced the evil in her, that is fact.. Remember that Hindley didn't just lure them and then stand back. She stabbed Pauline Reade, although she struggled, before Brady then stuck the final blow and stabbed the poor girl in the neck . Brady also claimed that Hindley was the one who actually strangled Lesley Anne Downey, so she was very much a complicit murderer, not just a passive accomplice.
We simply don't know the precise details of each murder except the final one of Evans. I don't think anyone ever claimed Hindley stabbed Reade . It is established that Brady slit her throat twice , that is all. Regarding Downey , Hindley in her confession said Brady killed her . Brady later said it was Hindley who strangled her. Both were motivated to tell lies - Hindley to perhaps eventually gain her freedom , and Brady just out of spite to deny her that freedom and retain control of the narrative.

I am a crime and mystery “junkie” and have read or watched many stories, novels and movies. This particular story was one of the most difficult I have listened to. These two were monsters, preying on babies. I pray for the momma that still can’t rest until she can bury her boy. May the Lord watch over her.
I lived near the Moors years and years ago. I’d always see her going down to the moors with a shovel looking for his body. Sadly she died in 2012 and Keith will probably never be found. It kills me inside whenever I think about it.

I'm a Christian and think it's great when someone comes to faith in prison however this should have NOTHING to do with their release. In fact, I'm of the opinion that if one comes to faith in Christ while behind bars, one should say "No, I did wrong and I deserve to be in here because it's my punishment". If you want to serve God, you can do that in prison with your fellow inmates. Not push for a release. If you're truly sorry for your crimes then you should understand and accept your punishment.
Totally agree with you I too Am Christian and while its not for us to say if she was or wasn't saved or if she was,or wasn't forgiven by God But it doesn't give you a 'Get out of jail free card' Here on Earth.
I get that Julia but I think the point is it doesn't matter if she was RC ,or whatever- Christian or any other faith she committed a crime here on Earth and she was found guilty in a court of Law so Religion or lack of it is beside the point , up until death at least it doesn't excuse or forgive what she did . I hope she did find God and if she she did she would be forgiven by him on judgement day but she still had to answer for her crimes and be punished here on Earth.

I still find it amazing that here in the UK...even now, no one calls a baby girl Myra. It’s like the name is taboo. And yet Ian is not. I really think she would have killed, even without him, but it might have been more domestic based, like she might have abused/killed her own children or husband etc, rather than ‘hunting’ children outside.
Ian is too common, Myra is pretty old fashioned and not really common. There's probably not a lot of notable people with the name Myra either because the first thing that comes to mind is the Moors murders. I think it is a rather taboo name but I live in Manchester so it's probably more taboo here than other parts of the UK.
I think it's more to do with the names not being very nice ! Subjective I know. Ian is very dated and Myra is old fashioned. Fred and Rose are very popular names for example.

Why does this sound familiar? USA: "Umm guns kill people, no questions asked." Britain: "Knives are responsible for killing people, not the people holding them!" It's almost like the media around the world ignores the true causes of most of these crimes/criminals (mental illness, piss poor parenting, abuse, indoctrination/manipulation to questionable ideologies, etc,.) and put the blame on the weapons only. Its interesting however because we have had many more here in the UK since they were caught, the 2 serial killers in the video are from the 60s and although the serial killers since are not as popular, they were just as bad and no one seems to be any closer after almost 60 years to prevent a single one. You can't stop anyone from doing anything and blaming the tools they use as an excuse for their actions is lazy, irresponsible and trying to make out they are somehow not as much responsible for their actions. Its actually disturbing that anyone would blame the tools and not the person committing crimes. Bad people don't stop doing bad things, they just find different ways to commit their crimes. Every one of us is born with free will, to make the decision to go down a certain path in life. I don't believe for a minute that Ian transformed or forced Myra to become a killer. Just because you say it's true doesn't make it so. And the simple minded folk who think you're right are just as sloppy at thinking as you are. 1. Some people don’t actually believe that their choices are made outside the scope of cause-and-effect. In the classic Nature or Nurture debate, nobody ever seems to argue for "neither" because everything we do is implicitly understood to be based on antecedent causes. People will object to this, but when asked why they did something, they’re stuck in a corner. They can say it was random, but that’s not free will. Alternatively, they can say, "I did it because…" and fill in the blank. That’s fine, but whatever reason they give will be an example of causality, by definition. That’s the meaning of the word "because." It doesn’t even matter what they put at the end of the phrase - it’s still a cause. Saying "I did it just because I wanted to," or "I did it just because I chose to," doesn’t help. It only pushes the question back a step, without answering it. Why did they want to? Why did they choose to? Again, they can either claim it was random, or they can give a cause. But neither option offers free will. 2. Chemicals have unequivocal effects on our brains. If our decisions are not dependent on antecedent causes, then chemicals should not have any affect on them. This is obviously not a reflection of reality, but it’s the logical result of contra-causal free will. Drugs such as alcohol have a very noticeable effect on our cognitive abilities. For obvious reasons, some people don’t deny that this is true. But they also don’t explain why they believe that our decisions are subject to some physical causality (drugs), but not others (everything else in the world). Some people tend to get lost in abstract concepts like emotions and wills, and forget that they ultimately have to explain their theory in the concrete terms of electrochemistry and neurons. 3. The most compelling evidence for determinism is the consistency of chemistry in general. Chemicals reactions are unwavering in their predictability, both inside and outside of our bodies. To look for the potential causes and then potential solutions requires us to accept we don't have that type of free will. It becomes a true dichotomy. Do you blame the murderer as you believe they have free will? Or do you look for the actual causes and address those so others don't succumb to the same environmental/genetic predisposition triggers? It requires a combination of compassion, understanding, and critical thinking. Declaring someone to have free will simply requires someone to be emotionally influenced by what they've seen/heard. That is the opposite of what's required to improve the health and well being of the world.

This is honestly awful. I also hate that they're trying to give Myra an out by saying that she was coerced by Brady. Perhaps he awakened these twisted desires in her, but the fact that she willingly went along with it, willingly picking up children KNOWING what Brady planned to do to them...then claimed their innocence over and over again even after having witnessed what that disgusting man did....no, that's not merely someone being manipulated. Brady merely gave her the sense that it was acceptable to act upon whatever disgusting, evil urges she wanted. She could have turned him in, could have tried to stop him, she could have refused to pick up those kids. She didn't, because she WANTED to do this. End of story.
Horrible monster of a woman, relieved she died in jail. I cannot imagine the pain of the victims or their families. They all deserved so much better. I truly hope there is a happy afterlife and that Winnie and Keith can be reunited and have the time they were so cruelly denied to be mother and son.

Lesley Ann was born the same year as me, she was just 3 months younger, I lived in Lancashire, just below the Yorkshire Moors, there were posters everywhere of her, it changed all of the lives of me, my friends and my family, parents were terrified of us children playing out, walking to school or even going to the toffee shop. The freedom of us children to roam and play out all day was lost, the confidence of our parents that we would always come home had gone, lives were changed forever. I cannot imagine how those poor poor parents managed to exist for all those years with the intense pain that could never fade. Brady and Hindley were beyond evil, more than putrid, they were an abomination of Gods creation.

THE most tragic figure in all this is Winnie Johnson - breaks my heart to think Keith's body was never found. Even to this day (2020) it's never ever been discovered! Poor lady went to the grave never having found her lad - she must have been tortured every single day that she lived! I hope his body IS found, although I did watch another documentary a few days ago and the same former chief of Manchester police said he didn't think the body would be found because it was buried near a stream and his bones may have disintegrated (I'm paraphrasing what he said! ).

She didn't just tell the child to be quiet on the tape, she told her to shut up or she'll hit her again. She remained silent for 20 YEARS about the body's locations until she was convinced it was the only way she might get parole, which was also the reason she cut off contact with Brady. She was no different to him.

I agree some sort of resolution is needed in the lives of the families. Another example is the mother of Jamie Bulger,who still cannot accept that those boys were very troubled children at the time of the murder,so shouldnt have been given a whole life term.Its difficult,because nobody knows how they would react in that situation unless it happened to them.

Some say that once she was separated from Brady, Myra became her old self. I saw how Myra behaved. She died in 2012 without ever finding her son. She was well known and loved around gorton. The search for her son was called off in 2009. Remember that Hindley didn't just lure them and then stand back. She stabbed Pauline Reade, although she struggled, before Brady then stuck the final blow and stabbed the poor girl in the neck . Brady also claimed that Hindley was the one who actually strangled Lesley Anne Downey, so she was very much a complicit murderer, not just a passive accomplice.

We simply don't know the precise details of each murder except the final one of Evans. I don't think anyone ever claimed Hindley stabbed Reade . It is established that Brady slit her throat twice , that is all. Regarding Downey , Hindley in her confession said Brady killed her . Brady later said it was Hindley who strangled her. Both were motivated to tell lies - Hindley to perhaps eventually gain her freedom , and Brady just out of spite to deny her that freedom and retain control of the narrative.

I'm a Christian and think it's great when someone comes to faith in prison however this should have NOTHING to do with their release. In fact, I'm of the opinion that if one comes to faith in Christ while behind bars, one should say "No, I did wrong and I deserve to be in here because it's my punishment".
If you want to serve God, you can do that in prison with your fellow inmates. Not push for a release. If you're truly sorry for your crimes then you should understand and accept your punishment.

In the classic Nature or Nurture debate, nobody ever seems to argue for "neither" because everything we do is implicitly understood to be based on antecedent causes. People will object to this, but when asked why they did something, they’re stuck in a corner. They can say it was random, but that’s not free will. Alternatively, they can say, "I did it because…" and fill in the blank. That’s fine, but whatever reason they give will be an example of causality, by definition. That’s the meaning of the word "because." It doesn’t even matter what they put at the end of the phrase - it’s still a cause.
Saying "I did it just because I wanted to," or "I did it just because I chose to," doesn’t help. It only pushes the question back a step, without answering it. Why did they want to? Why did they choose to? Again, they can either claim it was random, or they can give a cause. But neither option offers free will.
2. Chemicals have unequivocal effects on our brains.
If our decisions are not dependent on antecedent causes, then chemicals should not have any affect on them. This is obviously not a reflection of reality, but it’s the logical result of contra-causal free will. Drugs such as alcohol have a very noticeable effect on our cognitive abilities. For obvious reasons, some people don’t deny that this is true. But they also don’t explain why they believe that our decisions are subject to some physical causality (drugs), but not others (everything else in the world).
Some people tend to get lost in abstract concepts like emotions and wills, and forget that they ultimately have to explain their theory in the concrete terms of electrochemistry and neurons.
3. The most compelling evidence for determinism is the consistency of chemistry in general.
Chemicals reactions are unwavering in their predictability, both inside and outside of our bodies. Hydrocarbons don’t get to choose whether they’ll combust; enzymes don’t get to choose whether they’ll react with proteins; and our neurons don’t get to choose whether or not they’ll fire.
This reactive predictability is not optional. Atomic causality is an axiom upon which the scientific method rests. If one can’t depend on effects to have causes, then epistemological uncertainty becomes an ironic guarantee. Nothing could truly be proved or disproved. Our brains could theoretically produce gold out of thin air. And why not? If they can circumvent causality, then there’s no logical limit to what they could do. Some people would probably reject this claim immediately, but why? If they’re suggesting that there is a limit to the brain’s abilities, then what would it be, if not a causal limit?
4. Decisions are not real things; they’re behavioral models.
This is a big one, and it’s not an easy pill to swallow, because it's entirely counter-intuitive. I fully recognize this, but it’s not without evidence.
Cognitive activity is like other bodily activity: at every stage it is predicated on earlier chemistry. Decisions don’t just boot up and then dissipate like computers being switched on and off. Instead, they’re constantly producing, and being produced by previous activity and new input. Decisions develop. Our brains are uncontroversially in a state of constant feedback. Even when we logically believe that our brains are idle, they’re not. They’re always moving. They don’t even sleep the way we do. They’re as busy as ever, even when we’re out cold.
This point is subtle, but it’s crucial: What we call ‘decisions’ are not discrete items that we’ve somehow produced with our ‘wills’. Neither of those things is objectively real. Decisions are merely the latest articulated point in an unending cycle of cognitive activity, of which we do not have intellectual access.
5. No physical theory has been given to explain free will.
There is no hypothesis that physically explains free will. In fact, there isn’t even an empirically observable ‘free will’ to be explained. There is merely the sensation of free will, which compatibilists refer to as "volition." Such volition does not require contra-causal free will, and even if it’s not immediately intuitive, it remains perfectly explainable by physical biology.
Most new scientific explanations are not immediately intuitive. When Maxwell hypothesized that light and magnetism were the same force, people rejected him out of hand. Intuitively Maxwell was wrong, but scientifically he was right. Similarly, it was once counter-intuitive to think that a burning bonfire and a rusting pipe were undergoing the same process. But they are. Along the same lines, most people believed that the bonfire was undergoing the same process as the sun. Today, though, we understand perfectly well that nuclear fusion bears no resemblance to oxidation.
The intuitive sensation of free will is not sufficient reason to believe that it’s actually contra-causal. What is intuitive is often false in the face of scientific inquiry, so relying on what you "feel" is a poor basis for rational philosophy. There are a number of sufficient and defensible explanations for deterministic human behavior - some of which I’ve laid out here - but there are literally no such explanations for free will. Most cognitive scientists believe that our brains function causally, and this belief is not at all without evidence. And to reiterate the larger point: There is no scientific explanation for free will, nor is there any hypothesis that attempts to explain how it might work on a behavioral level, nor is there even a principle or test to demonstrate which entities supposedly have such free will, and which do not.

That is a declaration of belief, a belief which when investigated has a lack of good evidence to support it, yet continues to be prevalent despite the harm it causes. It's what a lot of people have as a cornerstone to their whole life philosophy. It generates notions of "deserve" and restricts us from investigating the true causes of not only the things around us, but also the behaviours of ourselves.
We cannot find the solutions needed for the problems in the world if we're going to conjure into existence free will. To look for the potential causes and then potential solutions requires us to accept we don't have that type of free will. It becomes a true dichotomy. Do you blame the murderer as you believe they have free will? Or do you look for the actual causes and address those so others don't succumb to the same environmental/genetic predisposition triggers?
It requires a combination of compassion, understanding, and critical thinking. Declaring someone to have free will simply requires someone to be emotionally influenced by what they've seen/heard. That is the opposite of what's required to improve the health and well being of the world.

Lesley Ann was born the same year as me, she was just 3 months younger, I lived in Lancashire, just below the Yorkshire Moors, there were posters everywhere of her, it changed all of the lives of me, my friends and my family, parents were terrified of us children playing out, walking to school or even going to the toffee shop. The freedom of us children to roam and play out all day was lost, the confidence of our parents that we would always come home had gone, lives were changed forever. I cannot imagine how those poor poor parents managed to exist for all those years with the intense pain that could never fade. I find it very interesting that you claim that Myra wouldn't have killed anybody. Perhaps Ian Brady wouldn't have killed anybody if he hadn't met Myra.
if you look into their backgrounds you can see Ian was always destined to be a killer. It's kinda like how if Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold never met, Eric would have probably gone on to kill yet Dylan probably wouldn't
An actual crime series and documentary series that makes you rewind every 30 seconds because the content is actually engaging and new and provoking of thought and taking in multiple factors and facts. Very fulfilling.

Hindley may not have killed without Brady but the fact remains that with him she questioned nothing and had no qualms about the abductions, rapes and murders of all of those 5 victims, effectively ending the world's of their families forever. I hate the way David Smith is demonised in all this without him they would not have been caught. David did not murder anyone, Hindley and Brady did!!

John Kilbride's brother was voicing what everyone was thinking when he said he wished the powers-that-be would have dropped her off in Ashton Market --- she wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes - and frankly I can't see the police arresting the whole of the marketplace for murder. I agree; cadaver dogs, imaging technology etc Brady could not have walked more than half a mile with a child from the road. I also find it surprising; the smart thing to have done would have been to have tortured him to reveal the truth, because the truth is that however hard-headed a psychopath may appear to be, he or she is deeply self-centred and a coward; he never picked on anyone his own size, or had a fair fight, did he ? Liberal democracies get it all wrong when it comes to unregenerate criminals. Who cares about them, think about the victims .....the poor mother of Keith Bennett...I weep for this situation. My Dad is an Ian, he is the best dad and grandad, just because two killers Brady and Huntley share his name doesn't make him any less a good person, Your Myra is her own unique soul, sure she will make you proud and have a great life .BTW my nephew has Ian as his middle name to honour his grandad .

She wasn’t normal before she met him , he didn’t even like her when they met he wanted nothing to do with her so she proceeded to change absolutely everything about herself to attract him , she knew he was a shady skeezy guy when they met and she pursued him relentlessly, I’m sorry but you’re either capable of killing a child or you’re not .
And the fact that after caught Brady submitted and hinley was still trying to manipulate ppl shows you what the dynamic of that relationship truly was .

Poor Winnie. She never found Keith and never found closure. Those two vile monsters tortured the whole families of their victims for years.
THE most tragic figure in all this is Winnie Johnson - breaks my heart to think Keith's body was never found. Even to this day (2020) it's never ever been discovered! Poor lady went to the grave never having found her lad - she must have been tortured every single day that she lived! I hope his body IS found, although I did watch another documentary a few days ago and the same former chief of Manchester police said he didn't think the body would be found because it was buried near a stream and his bones may have disintegrated (I'm paraphrasing what he said! ).
And yet all these years later women and mothers are seen as angels. Just see other comments here saying "but what about the man?" Yeah plenty of evil.women in this world. Wake up!

but for them, of course, they find a lot of excuses in the form of a bad childhood, a bad mother, girls who rejected him. here, no one remembered that her father beat her all her childhood, everyone says that there are no excuses for her, although she was only an accomplice of the real killer and rapist. a very revealing division of responsibility between men and women
