Thanks so much! Yeah it was hard to learn about how to use the NVR because I couldn't find much online so I thought I'd share some basics. Glad you found it helpful!
I bought this system from Costco in 2019 so it is about 5 yrs old. Never had one issue until last week. I woke up one morning and the system was dead. I tested the power supply and saw that it had 48 V DC present so it appeared that the power supply was OK. I went ahead and bought a new one for 24 bucks just to rule that out. The circuit board was dead, and I could not see any evidence of any other other issues like capacitors blown or anything. it was the power supply. The power supply brought it back to life. I took this as an opportunity to upgrade the hard drive as well from 2 TB to 6 TB. my unit came with a cameras originally. so if your power ever fails, it might be the 48 V DC power supply! overall been very happy with this system! When upgrading HD just format the drive on another computer before putting it into the NVR. Once you do that it will recognize it and run with it
Hey Man, great video! At first I thought 25 minutes would be way too long with useless rambling which is common on TH-cam. I skimmed it first, but found so many valuable nuggets in here I watched the whole thing again. Thanks a ton! You sealed my decision to proceed with Lorex.
One of the best Lorex videos I have seen. Thank you sir, excited to get my system setup, just waiting on one last part from Monoprice so I can crimp my Cat6A cables and I will be ready to rock

Upgraded as the older system died.. cameras still worked but the hard drive crashed..Upgraded to the smart system hopefully my older cameras can work to still. Haven't set up yet to find out thank you for posting this I'll probably be looking back on it a few times...
Thank you, you are the best explainer! I bought the same exact system and having a professional attach to the house but I 'tested' it to be more familiar with it. Got it from B&H Phorovideo black friday sale $470 which finally got me to jump in. also purchased an Orion CCTV specific 21" monitor open box to save $$ so am really happy with this system.
Hello! just wondering if you are not connected to your wifi home system or you are away from home, do you need a fix IP direction from your internet provider to be able to get the camera view in your phone or the Lorex have a way to get access even in a Dinamic IP service. or how i connect to the app to watch the cameras without a fix IP direction.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the great video. Your video made our decision to buy the Lorex 8 Camera NVR package at Costco. I know it took you a lot of time to do this video and it's greatly appreciated. You touched on a lot of features that I didn't know were available....but were exactly what I was looking for.
Lots of people on the Google Play store have major complaints on the lack of functionality with the Lorex app. They claim there's a "network error" message, multiple users can't be signed on to system at same time, video playback doesn't work, or fails to alert activity. Have you experienced these problems or are these bugs fixed? Sounds like a dealbreaker if these problems persist.
Update: In order to allow multiple authorized users and avoid having to sign back in or get booted out every time the administrator user uses the Lorex app., other authorized users can register in the Lorex app. creating their own account. Once that new account is established, the administrator account can then add other authorized users to their account to avoid having authorized users to sign back in or get booted within the Lorex app. Hope that helps.
The fusion system you can pair more cameras to that are not part of the package. Let's say that the system has 16 channels and 8 cameras are supplied. You can ad 8 additional wifi cameras such as a doorbell camera, in home cameras, flood lights, sensors, etc. They all have to be Lorex brand and have wifi fusion capabilities. The cool thing is that they can be controlled through the NVR system at the same time. This is the power of fusion

Great overview of the Lorex system. I have 2 Lorex doorbell cams and want to add a Fusion NVR. This was great info, confirming my desire to purchase the Lorex system.
Really wanted to LOVE this system. Costco had the 8 camera package version of this for $650. I had it for 3 days during which time I had to contact Lorex tech support each day for various problems. Even if I backed up the system configuration to a usb stick, importing that configuration did not restore the settings completely. Lorex USA customers have no other option then to deal with customer service agents in South America.. That's simply where there based out of. Regardless, the customer service is absolutely TERRIBLE!
Can you share you sensitivity and threshold settings? Also I have my camera on the front door like your setup but it takes 20-30 seconds to get notification of someone at the door. Do you know why it takes so long? Maybe a certain setting
Thank you, this has been very informative. I just purchased the fusion 8 camera system any opinions on the fusion system? As I do value your knowledge and opinions. Thanks again.
Hi important question 👋 is it possible to buy a Lorex set of 6 and install let’s say 3 in office and 3 at home on the same DVR? Thanks it would help so much
Great Review, we have an older lorex dvr system with the remote control, want to go with a nvr with single camera cables. We are not hooking up to internet or router, going to only use as stand alone for now. will the mouse be able to quickly change between outside cameras while monitoring live from inside the house? and how easy is going back and reviewing recorded camera footage from earlier in the day. Thanks.
@@GadgetryTech Glad to hear it. Would be interesting to see a video where you explain the difference between all the Lorex 4k camera systems. I don't understand why one costs $699 and one $999 for the same number of cameras and NVR. Sure, the cameras look different, but as far as I can tell, the specs are the same.
@@GadgetryTech Hi, I've seen a few reviews about this Lorex NVR, but nobody mention about the other cable coming out of the camera. If the power and data pass thru the Ethernet cable, what's that other cable/connector for?
I guess I must have the one with no voice talk. Although the box says two way talk. I have a telecom button but can’t seem to figure it out. Can you do a how to for setting up the motion sensor area. I’m getting frustrated with that part.
Hi Christina. The two way talk happens through the app but would require that your app permissions allow it to use the microphone of your smart device. I may do one or two other videos regarding how to use the app, and how to set up detection zones more. I've been asked that a lot but there was only so much I could in the first video without making it too long! Best of luck in the meantime, but I'll try to fit this into my review schedule as soon as I can.
Great review! If you were to extend one of the cameras longer than the 50' supplied cable, anything to prevent it going 100 or 200 feet to a back corner of our lot? I would assume we'd just lose picture quality?
I wanted to know what happens when the 2TB of storage runs out Or is it that the videos are discarded automatically after a certain period of time to make more space on the hardrive?
This is an outstanding review. I have been looking at the 4K Ultra HD 8-Channel Fusion NVR System with 2 Dome and 2 Bullet Smart Deterrence 4K IP Cameras and this really made my decision even easier. Great job!!!
Great review. That big round white connector on the end of the cable - is that the size of the hole I need to drill in my ceiling, or can I drill a hole just to accommodate the ethernet cable diameter?
Hello, question - what type of mounting plate are you using with the moisture barrier ? Is it a wall plate, better yet where did you purchase it Much thanks.
Hi Shirley. I had my house prewired for surveillance and that's what they used to seal the plates. I would think you could find it at a place like Home Depot or Lowes but I haven't had to look for more of them (yet).
@@GadgetryTech Thanks for your prompt response - as you can see I got busy but I appreciate your reply . I decided not to use a plate, thanks in advance.
I would like to have cameras displayed on my secondary monitor in my office which is not in the same building as the NVR. The NVR will be connected to wireless so it will have internet access. The mobile phone app is great but how would I view through a computer that's not connected to the NVR. Do you log into a website? Is this possible? Maybe a rookie question apologies in advance.
If you can be on the same network, there is remote viewing support via the NVR's IP address but it only supports Internet Explorer. IE is losing support from Microsoft so I'm not sure how long it will work. To be honest the NVR's web page for remote viewing is a bit poor/buggy.
Hmmm... at 17:34 you say you are "using cellular service not Wifi because you want to maximize latency but at 18:46 you say "and again this is on WIfi where the latency is maximized" So which was it?
How are the zones and notifications working for you? I was considering the 8-channel version that comes with 8 cameras, at Costco. It's the same cameras as you have it appears. However, upon reading the reviews, many complained about about many false alarms, even after setting their zones.
I had issues when I set the zones via the app which I think most people do. Try setting the zones via the NVR itself (when connected to a monitor or TV). That worked much better for me, and I no longer have false alarms.
if changing the hard-drive as when is brand new before first time use ( eg: upgrading from 2T / 3T to 6T/8T) then dose it need any setting/set-up/uploads or any steps to do about it or all those functions and settings and options are already pre-set in the NVR/cameras without being effected by changing/upgrading the hard drive to higher Terabytes?
Thanks GadgetryTech!! This is by far the best detailed video review on the Lorex 4k system that I've come across in 18 months. I keep going back & forth btwn wireless cloud cameras wyze, reolink, Tend which saves the free recordings on the cloud & this wired system which has the poe & high resolution . So I asked the following question with the highest respect. How do u or Lorex address the possibility of an intruder stealing the NVR to cover their tracks? I saw the comment below about using FTP to back up recordings but sounds kinda difficult even for an average computer savvy guy like me. I do have a usb network storage drive connected to my home router but the bad guys could find that too. I read about folks hiding the NVR in the house somewhere... etc... I like to hear about ur opinion or solution to this dilemma? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the kind words! This is a tough one to answer because it often comes down to where you can place things in your home. FTP backups can be challenging to set up and naturally cost a bit more because you need a computer or NAS (network attached storage system) that supports the connection. Usually it's best to hide/disguise your NVR when possible. Depending on where it goes, you could always make a custom "cage" or use a couple brackets to secure the NVR somewhere if you really want to lock it down. Most thieves look for quick in and out situations. If you slow down the process or make it too inconvenient to steal the NVR, I'd image it gets left where it is.
Very good video. Is it necessary to have a monitor to set up this device like to set set detection zones like you did? Or can everything be done on your cellular phone?
What are the RCA jacks on the back of the NVR? Please explain how I can talk out of one of the cameras. Can I record audio as well? Thanks for the great review.
Hi, thanks for the reviews. I just got a Lorex N841AB2-8AB4-E from Best Buy. Eight channel w/ four deterrence cameras. May be the same system you have. Unboxed it, set it all up and turned it on. Everything works just fine. BUT, I touched the cameras after they'd been on for about 30 minutes and all four of them were hot. I'm not talking warm, I'm talking close to uncomfortably hot! The kind of heat that kills electronics. Is this normal? I called tech support and after trying to make the script reader understand what my concern was, he just told me it was normal because there is power in there...! Really, who would have thought? So, I'm putting the question out to the folks on this video, are camera temperatures in excess of 107 deg F "normal". BTW, 107 is the max that my digital fever thermometer will register. Thanks.
Your video was released just as Lorex came out with a new replacement kit. Not sure where you picked that package up, but Costco has the new 8 camera kit for $800, only 2T and 60' cables, but also comes with some wireless door triggers and motion sensor. Like you said, these Lorex packages are a steal of a deal with all the tech and items you get. The newest version sports a shorter chassis (shell) which is nice and even rocks a totally new slot for a mico SD card in each camera. Lorex tech support is usually pretty good, but when I called to ask how large of a chip I could put in it, the tech tech told me that there is no card slot for the camera sitting in my hand with a clear card slot in it, that's how new it is I guess. In further searches, I could not find one mention of a card lot anywhere. The only thing I don't like about this unit and the predecessor, is that my only Lorex NVR work with a wireless mouse, these versions seem to not work with a wireless mouse, hopefully it was just an oversight and a software update can later fix.
Excellent Videos and one can learn a lot about this Lorex system from this video. I am doing the research for a security camera system right now and I really appreciate if you can show some videos clips and pictures of how well this system perform in the night time, which is very important for selecting a security camera system. Thanks.
Thanks! Yes you can disable them within the NVR user interface itself. The system has been working flawlessly. Sometimes I prefer the higher frame rate/lower resolution option for fast moving objects but at least you can choose between 4k@15 frames per second or got to a lower res 30 frame per second option.
Hi how do I remove the black Lorex from screen since my systems is setup for 9 cameras and only 6 are set up. Thank you in advance. Lorex is no help since I’m out of warranty.
Hello. I presently have the NEST cameras which work fine but this has my interest; I want cameras actually attached to my overhang of house. Do you have to have a monitor in your home for this or can you just use your phone app to view?? and how do you keep recording into the future> does it just begin to record over itself once it gets full?? thank you

So after the initial setup, can I disconnect from the NVR and operate day to day needs from the mobile app. I plan to stick the NVR in a closet and only use a screen when I need to make changes on the NVR.
At first the I had buyers remorse but after installing them and using it it was worth every penny.

Thanks.
can you get license plate numbers easily with this camera?
Having no install experience, is it relatively easy to run the wires and mount the cameras?
Excellent Videos and one can learn a lot about this Lorex system from this video. I am doing the research for a security camera system right now and I really appreciate if you can show some videos clips and pictures of how well this system perform in the night time, which is very important for selecting a security camera system. Thanks.
Is the hdd inside 3.5 inches?
Yes it is.
Excellent video! Can you disable the warning lights? Also, how has the system held up?
Thanks! Yes you can disable them within the NVR user interface itself. The system has been working flawlessly. Sometimes I prefer the higher frame rate/lower resolution option for fast moving objects but at least you can choose between 4k@15 frames per second or got to a lower res 30 frame per second option.
Where can I buy this? Amazon doesn't carry this model but similar ones.
Hi. Do you think this NVR good enough for a Lorex PTZ 2K?
Is it possible to disable the LED lights to not activate when motion is detected?
I have the lorex 8 camera with NVR 2TB, if I like to record 30 days just the motion and sound how big hard drive do I need to upgrade Any suggestions?
Where is the best place to keep the DVR unit? I saw a few people keeping them in the attic but it gets hot and cold there.
Does Lorex ship to UK?
Hi how do I remove the black Lorex from screen since my systems is setup for 9 cameras and only 6 are set up. Thank you in advance. Lorex is no help since I’m out of warranty.
is there a windows client or mac os
How can we watch Lorex NVR on the laptop? thanks
Hello. I presently have the NEST cameras which work fine but this has my interest; I want cameras actually attached to my overhang of house. Do you have to have a monitor in your home for this or can you just use your phone app to view?? and how do you keep recording into the future> does it just begin to record over itself once it gets full?? thank you
Great video. Very informative and without bs some many Videos have. I really don't care what uncle joe is doing or that that is your boat or cow. This is a straigth forward video which answers questions. Thank you.
Is there a way to shut off the nave if you don’t want to record?
So after the initial setup, can I disconnect from the NVR and operate day to day needs from the mobile app. I plan to stick the NVR in a closet and only use a screen when I need to make changes on the NVR.
The cameras need to remain connected to the NVR for power; unless you opt to supply the power an alternate way. Still not sure that will work, though
I reboot my nvr fusion and when i restarted i had no camera to register. Any tips? Thanks
