There's something so wildly funny to me that all the mythology of Spawn that people remember to this day as being central to the character (his suit being alive and the war with heaven) is just Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman trying to make something creative out of what is essentially Todd McFarlane's cool tattoo design
Well said. I always wishes that Todd had only illustrated and recognized what a weak writer he is. Imagine if spawn 1-50 had been a Gaiman writes book or more likely another talented but less massively popular writer. Even bow trying to get back into spawn on the Universe launch, I just can't read him. McFarlanes writing is just not acceptable to me as an adult reader... ashame because I still consider him a watershed artist. Not as prolific as Kirby but in a similar tradition...
todd is a genius in this regard, did little work, and almost got away with all the rewards. but this is the type of thing these writers have been doing long before spawn, all early comics characters where cool looking drawings who these top talents would, 20 to 30 years after their creation, make them into complex people who represent a human asperation. he was smart to bring a variety of writers to diversify his lore early on, neil makes todd seem like a fool who stumbled onto this fact, but in my mind he had no surprise about what those men would bring to the table.
Absolutely love Comics Court! Definitely should be a regular feature. We've got to get cracking and start digging up other depositions because Uncle Todd and Uncle Neil won't go on forever!
Stuff like this hopefully makes others appreciate good people like Paul Levitz who fought at a corporate level to get royalties to creators with appropriate credit
This has been such a fun series. Love the effort you guys put into this. also just got my red room PB and very happy! Just need to get Plain Janes . LOVE YOU GUYS!!
Piskor has an excellent point about how differently questions regarding the origin of an Idea are revealed by either a fan or a judge. I understand how writers find it a bit tedious in general, but when a person is specific about what idea they are talking about there is usually an answer if only an intangible one. I always loved Ellisons reply of "Scenectity. There's service in Scenectity. I send them money and I get a six pack of fresh ideas... And some Schaub always asks how to contact them..."
Although I always enjoy your channel (and comics - I've bought all the Grand Designs, Red Room was probably my favourite Indie of the year and my Daughter LOVES Plain Janes) this series of depositions is close to my favourite content you two have done(A Kirby one and John Byrne's bootleg X-Men comics are are right up there too). God Bless the King's of Kayfabe! Edit - For typo
Insanly interresting that Gaiman came up with the idea of the possibility to circumvent the devil... last time it appeared the power meter was already down around 5:0:0:0(?) - so Spawn may have ended already around #70(?). It's cool to hear how much influence a good writer(s) (also Alan Moore) can have in so few issues... (If I remember the frank miller one was disappointing to me - and was never brought back - at least not in the ~100 issues I have read. It really makes me wanna dig into some of the new spawn stuff and see where things are nowadays ~ 200 issues later
Careful, asking a bunch of people on the internet to let Gaiman know you want to interview him could make you the subject of the next deposition! Seriously though, I am digging this series, looking forward to next week
I tend to hear Gaiman as a sort of Paddington pure character, incapable of actual anger, but that clapback about the use of the term "minor character" shit...that's some real rage.

Kudos to McFarlane for apparently publishing an ongoing comic without a plan. That boy has no fear of failure.
Do Grant Morrison suing the Wachowskis; The Invisibles vs. The Matrix!

Heel Gaiman vs Todd McMahon

Thank you so much for these! The content is so fascinating!
Great content, Ed and Jim!!! You guys are getting better each episode at acting out the courtroom drama; I’m totally there!
This has been such a fun series. Love the effort you guys put into this.

I'm totally buying into the two of you as Neil and as Todd's lawyer. Great stuff!
This is so good! I'm only a casual comic reader but this is fascinating stuff.
Love this format! Keep it up! You guys are killin' it!
The thumbnail is perfect! Does that mean Tom is Judge Wapner?
Love this stuff. It’s so informative.
Barbie and Ken ? Sounds like Mattel might want to talk to Mr. Gaiman.
Keep it up! This content is amazing!
It's wild to me that everything I actually loved about spawn doesn't have to do with Mcfarlane. lol
I'm sure it's been said before but someone should make this into comic.
I only realized that Jim was not doing the British accent when he said lovely for describing the idea of spawn`s costume being alive XD
Legal advice, creative process..! Fascinating stuff.

Thanks so much for these deposition videos. Simply riveting stuff!
Have loved this series! So fascinating to hear about the nuts and bolts of comics conflict.
Every time you get to end of one of these I'm never prepared. A little "NOOOOO!" goes through my head. HA!
do Air Pirates! or Mike Diana
Oh is that what that counter is? It’s a power counter? I’m a new reader to Spawn & couldn’t understand what that timer/counter was in most issues.
Great stuff. Gaiman makes it interesting even in court
who is the army of hell fighting Todd?? well I dont know. 😂
😂😂😂😂
I love this series so much. This is so useful and interesting.
My new Monday tradition!
I hop we get more Litigation/Mitigation Mondays
Ask Neil about Dennis Kitchen's first comic-con - I think I read he was there

What the fuck is wrong with me that I love this
Heel Gaiman

You got a good one.. cause you're reading gaiman, and I get to hear him slay - poor counsel.
The Letterer of the Law, ha!
I tend to hear Gaiman as a sort of Paddington pure character, incapable of actual anger, but that clapback about the use of the term "minor character" shit...that's some real rage.
It’s his Hard Stare
This stuff is like legal candy
Kirkman and Moore had a legal conflict with one another?
he should just stop and finish miracleman already
