A Harlan Ellison deposition must be a level of lawyer hell I can't even imagine. I would not want to cross verbal swords with that guy under any circumstances.
I heard Ellison say at a lecture there were two people he didn't want to hear nice things about: his agent and his lawyer. It was like "I want my lawyer to be like a vampire."
Absolutely. Look at how he would cut down a groveling fan at a signing or anyone who said anything remotely foolish, let alone someone who has crossed him. A true verbal samurai on par with Christopher Hitchens and 3 times as ornery.
I commend you both for not making this into a mockery. Lord knows it would be easy to do. Instead, you have made this into a compelling examination of the treacherous intersection of art and commerce
"The Treacherous Intersection of Art and Commerce" as a Book, Forum, or TH-cam channel, is something we all need. Ed & Jim really are doing a great job.
Hey Ed you really have been helping me a lot in my life in just reading your books and your Instagram posts. Life isn't always the best but red room reminds you it could be worse.
The depositions are more to do with discovery, what you want is the actual trial transcripts (which I have). As far as I can see, the Joe Simon stuff isn't on-line, but the Kirby stuff is, with the best Stan Lee deposition hidden away...there's a lot of material out there, but it's expensive to obtain and near impossible to locate.
I hope CK got in touch already to follow this up with the trial transcripts... I hear they give great handshakes!! (jk, not really implying anything). I hope you're at least working in a different book with this content, the world needs this to be available!!
Guys, this stuff is FANTASTIC. I've been working on a trilogy of stage plays about the history of the industry, and this kind of stuff has become utter catnip to me....I eat it up.
Crazy lawyer idea here. There probably is a video of all important depositions in this case. Call the court reporter listed on the transcript, pay $500, and voila, rather than a dry interview text, you have a documentary you can watch. Maybe, idk, there would be no impediment to posting on TH-cam. Also, videos show mannerisms and confidence that don't show up on the page
I just ran across in the Spawn #11 (Frank Miller issue) letters page, the first letter Todd answers he thanks all the guest writers and says, "Neil also gave me enough spring-board ideas from his issue to keep me going for another year or so." !!!
I'm only at the beginning of this probably fascinating episode. Took the afternoon off when I noticed it was up. The interesting thing about the Miracle Man/Mick Anglo debacle: I guess Alan Moore was happy that the rights reverted to the original creator. The really funny thing is that Miracle(Marvel) Man was invented by TRACING over Capt. Marvel, and stealing his powers, cast, etc. Additionally, Anglo swiped his own work to create both the similar Captain Miracle and the 1960's Miracle Man. He twice swiped his own swipe before Alan Moore swiped his original swipe, and he got royalties for it decades later. It's almost admirable.
Just want to say that I really appreciate you guys doing this. And the fact that you gave the Author of the book more than just a shout out. Would love to see DC vs Siegel and Shuster or both! Keep up the great work!
This reminds me of People's Court when the plaintiff would start talking about verbal contracts and Judge Wapner be like, "But did you get it in writing?"
Why do the creators do this TRASH man, WOW!!!! Just give old boy his due, he helped with your money maker, give him his zenni!!!!!! SAD stuff right there, oh well, comics. PEACE family, and thank you gentlemen for the work and sharing. God bless.
This is great. You guys need to do more content about intellectual property rights about creators coming up with great ideas. Court documents are great.
As a sworn attorney, I can only say . . . keep it comin', keep it comin', keep it comin' full steam. We all want to hear this. This is how sworn testimony reads. Lesson: stay out of court.
This does make for a good show you guys! I wish I could live my dream of drawing and get enough $ to get by. I found you guys during the pandemic as well as many other comic creators and material that I wish I knew of in my younger days. I’m 43 now and don’t draw as much as I would like to…
Tom Brevort recently posted jpegs of a Kirby deposition, or whatever it was. I saved them, so let me know if you want me to send them on. I assume they are easy to find.
“Yo, this is Toddy, the Todd-meister!”
You guys should definitely do more shows on comics and legal cases. This is pure gold.
I am WAY too happy to see this drop.
Incredible how lucky this fan base is for this channel.
One of the great comic book resources for sure
These segments are riveting, I’m far more intrigued than I thought I would be

Damn, and I thought my parent's divorce was messy.

Another winner. Can't wait until you guys get to the rest of these. Fascinating stuff.
"Hey, it's the toddmeister" I imagined Todd dressed up as The Fonz.
Or in all denim! permed-head to toe!

These videos have been so interesting and insightful!
Loving this series. Would be terrific if you all found other docs to read out in the format.
This reminds me of People's Court when the plaintiff would start talking about verbal contracts and Judge Wapner be like, "But did you get it in writing?"
this is great stuff! i hope this series continues. great idea.
Why do the creators do this TRASH man, WOW!!!! Just give old boy his due, he helped with your money maker, give him his zenni!!!!!! SAD stuff right there, oh well, comics. PEACE family, and thank you gentlemen for the work and sharing. God bless.

Yes!! Pt2
I’m just tuning in … is there a antagonist or a “bad” guy in all this? Neil or Todd?
This kind of case isn't black and white.
This does make for a good show you guys! I wish I could live my dream of drawing and get enough $ to get by. I found you guys during the pandemic as well as many other comic creators and material that I wish I knew of in my younger days. I’m 43 now and don’t draw as much as I would like to…
