Not "pure martial hand-to-hand" as techniques like the Kamehameha Wave existed and were used, but there was more emphasis on a realistic style of fighting over the always insane fighting of DBZ. Both had plenty of ridiculous fights and moves, but DB was slightly more grounded most of the time.

i am very lucky that i grew up watching dragon ball first and then i went to Z. this way it was a natural progression of goku's journey and not suddenly going back like many did
Yes completely true. Im from latinamerica and here we were lucky to watch first DRAGON BALL. You can really see that AMERICAN FANS have very wrong ideas of the show. Like thinking DBZ is a show about GOHAN or VEGETA, this doesnt happen here because as you watch the first series, you understand WHY IS GOKUS SHOW, and also you can see that AMERICAN FANS dont know the comedy part of AKIRA TORIYAMA, so when they see DB SUPER they really feel weird towards the humor. However if you watch the first series this humor will feel natural .
My favorite one was when goku reunited with his grandpa gohan for the first time. And goku was crying and saying “grandpa I missed you.” My heart melted at that scene.

Yep I agree, the fighting in dragon ball was way more interesting, and they had to think of clever ways to beat their opponents rather than just powering up
I prefer the animation in Dragonball. There was no over the top rippling muscles and the faces were nicer to look at. I also missed Yamcha in Dragonball and wish he would have had more significance in DBZ and room to develop as a character, rather than being thrown away as a side character that is taken as a joke.
Gaming Football Kid Goku was always precious. Both the dub and Japanese versions. But, I do agree that he sounded slightly more adorable in the original Japanese version/

DBS is better than Z because it retconed everything that was ruined in Z, and is more similar to DB. 1. It didn't just focus on the 🐒 (and the worst character in history - Vegeta) (still can't believe they replaced every original character so he can take the spotlight; honest to god, Frieza is a lot more tolerable) 2. It removed the obsession with power levels 3. It made the original characters relevant again (an example of Z's abomination is Krillin's story in the Buu arcs) 4. DB was funny again, and not the poor out of place jokes that Z had) 5. it removed everything cringe introduced in Z (like Mr. Satan, Great Sayaman were mostly forgotten)
@@ginta_san In a vacuum, I would agree but in the world that was portrayed it was near nonsensical and often betrayed characters' arcs or make Goku look incompetent. I will give two examples, 17 and Roshi. Roshi's development in the original manga climaxed when he bowed down to the new generation gracefully after he saw Tein, Goku, and Kururin grow into strong fighters. So when he comes back into fighting and overthrows Tien, it goes against his development and makes Tien look absolutely bad. 17 Makes everyone look incompetent, Goku was far stronger at the end of the Cell saga, and got to train with the best of masters and with other people equal to him which is telegraphed to us as being the best way to get stronger. Then comes 17 who apparently trained alone to the level equal to gods even though he isn't even a martial artist.
One of my favorite filler arcs in Dragon Ball is the adventure at the end where Goku and Chi-Chi have to find a way to extinguish the flames in Ox King's castle. We get to see more of Adult Chi-Chi being not annoying.
I love Dragonball so much more then Z, I watched Z first and I liked it but, then I watched Dragonball and I loved the Earthlings who were swept aside for the Sayains. I'm probably the only one who likes the Earthlings more then the Sayains.
I completely disagree with the pacing and filler. While I enjoy the original manga story, the anime adaptation moved wayyy too slow for my taste and it was honestly boring. As for the filler in DB, the majority of it dragged out too much and nothing really happened. Z had great fillers like the Otherworld Tournament, Gohan trying to balance his normal high school life with his Great Saiyaman persona, Goku and Piccolo learning how to drive, etc. I do agree with everything else though. The characters felt more fleshed out and the comedy was great.
While I personally enjoy Z myself, these are are all really great points. Dragon Ball more of an adventure story while Z is more of a sci-fi story. Both are really different butt I love them all the same.

I agree with all the points. Especially the character development of Goku. People always talk shit of DB because of little character development. In Dragon Ball we see character development of Goku, Krilin, Tien, and other characters. The best way to begin with the DB franchise, is first seeing Dragon ball, then DBZ.
What I like about Dragon Ball over Z is that fights weren't just decided by strength and transformations but techniques and martial arts skills as well and I like that Super is sorta going back to that
I first watched dragon ball Z as a 11 year old kid it was absolutely fabulous and I loved it. Now Im 30 years old watching OG Dragon Ball its really far far ahead of Z and much mature than Z. Its fights, martial arts, wisdom nuggets, adventure & comedy..

I feel as though the Dragon ball story from the beginning of Dragon Ball to the end of the Frieza saga was simply amazing! Fucking 10/10.Then the Android saga came. Which was was good, but I feel as though that's where it declined. The Cell arc, within the android arc though was really good.
I personally liked Z 's filler more. Gohan's training before the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa, Goku's training on his way to Namek, Vegeta searching in space for Goku during the 2yrs he was away after his battle with Freeza, Goku's search for the Dragonballs during the 9 day wait for the Cell games, General Tao crapping his pants seeing an adult Super Saiyan Goku and even seeing that he has a son just as powerful, not to mention Gohan going to high school, his training with Goten. Great stuff there
+Bangar Raju not all fillers has to have important life lessons and build character, they just be fun little episodes to showcase our favorite characters in their daily lives outside of fighting. Goku and Piccolo going to driving school, Gohan going to highschool and socializing with other ppl besides his mom and piccolo, etc.

First of all I watch plenty of animes and I've seen DB and DBZ in sub and dub. I understand DB super. I understand DBS is complete garbage. It have bad writing. Even the black goku arc was terrible. And that had a dark plot.
Bangar Raju I never said I preferred one over the other. But they have things over each other. My favorite saga through both was the Namek saga followed by the 21st and 23rd world tournament. My favorite character is Vegeta, followed by Bulma, and Goku/Teen Gohan. My favorite top 3 favorite moments in dragon ball would be Vegeta's ssj transformation, Goku arriving to fight Vegeta, and Gohan's ssj2 transformation. What I'm getting at is my favorite moments, charecters, quotes, and soundtracks in Dragon Ball came in Z. Not to down talk Dragon Ball as it had my favorite fights and most emotional moments. But its all opinion. Also I can't be the only one who will charge up to become an ssj until the end of time whenever they get a chance.
As a life long fan of the entire Dragon Ball, z, super, and all manga stories.. i can honestly say there is no other show like this, it is uplifting and unique in just the right mix. After reading the manga you realize the fights and everything moves so much faster and well paced. This mostly relates to Z, but if you have only seen the anime I highly recommend you to read the manga.
You guys named the most important points on my mind, but here's another one: the progression from a light-hearted adventure story to a serious action-packed drama. The first few arcs of Dragon Ball focus a lot on comedy, and no single life is wasted. But slowly we get several turning points in the series. Some of them happen in the Red Ribbon Arc: especially when Bora is killed by Tao Pai Pai. That death makes a big impact, because we never saw that before. And Goku actually has to go out of his way for an entire arc to gather the Dragon Balls and bring him back. And who could forget Krillin's first death? That's when death actually mattered in Dragon Ball. DBZ obviously had the advantage of being more extreme. It took the drama to a higher level from the start. But when you start off with a dark and serious tone... where can you go from there? The original Dragon ball, in a way, matured in a similiar fashion to Goku's growth. Another point I just brought up: The Dragon Balls actually mattered, people had to work to collect them. In DBZ we only got that during the Namek arc. But other that that: they became a cheap plot convenience to fix collateral damage after every fight.
Z being serious from the start makes it better than the original as characters had actual character development and the story is far interesting throughout its run.the original had little of that in the 1st part which brings it down for me,tho even after Tao Pai it still lack a proper storyline and character development. I'll say the dragon balls had a fine role in Z. the sayian arc was all about protecting the dragon balls and the namek arc was all about getting them.the cell arc I'll excuse it since the dragon balls were unavailable for most of the arc and they still had an important role.the buu arc the dragon balls were used as you said but did help the heros beat buu.
Dragon ball had the best outro romantic ageryuo..... even though zenkai power is great makes me want to teach a dinosaur how to ride a ball.... maybe we will go on a mystical grand tour......
Everything. There are no 10 thing. The fights are better, the comedy is better, the drama is better, the storytelling is more tight and has less plot holes, the characters are written better, the filler is less boring. The music is even, since Kikuchi did both and he both scores are amazing. It is true that the Sayian-Namek arcs are the peaks of the series, but the Cell and Buu arc are so poor, it drags everything down.
I like how in dragon ball goku works on tangible weaknesses ( like his tail) and doesn’t just get another transformation. It was more about martial arts and training.
Great video! You mentioned that DBZ has many plotholes etc. I would definitely be interested in seeing you talk about most/all of them in a video of sorts, as I can't really think of any inconsistencies/plotholes that stick out! I hope you do that one day! :D
I liked how DB actually gave love to all the side characters. Enemies were way more interesting and unique with powers and such, not just an enemy who can shoot a bigger phallic laser beam :P
I just love the adventurous aspect of DB. I love them both (DB and DBZ) but Goku as a child was fucking awesome to sit down and watch! I love the fights in DBZ and most of the characters as well so I can’t choose. I love them both.
Since piccolo was defeated, saving the world turned into a daily thing, maybe you can argue after Vegeta, but I stick with piccolo. Stuff got out of control when the dragon balls were easy to get.
Dragon Ball is UNDOUBTEDLY better than Z and I agree with every single point in this video. I really do wish more people would give the original Dragon Ball the chance and respect it deserves. It's so good.
i LOVE dragon ball, i do definitely love Z too but i'll always prefer dragon ball and i agree with everything on the list, i love dragon ball cuz of the comedy, it has more of a sense of adventure and fun, it's more focused on material arts, i love the intro and i love kid goku, nothing wil change how much i love the dragon ball anime! :)
djh 1991 In my case, I was introduced to DragonBall the first series in 1997 in Italy, but it was not on a national TV channel (it was not that popular yet), as it was aired on a local TV station in the autonomous island of Sardinia. I remember also my grown up brother in law watching DB and telling me "You know there is also a DragonBall comic in the bookshop?" (which is what introduced me to Mangas) and then he told me it was the same author of Arale, another great comedy made by Toriyama that I got to know before DB. DB was great fun and addictive, and I would never miss an episode. One peculiar thing is that almost nobody would refer to the anime as "DragonBall" but most people would refer to it as "Goku" and he was everybody's favourite character. When DB came to the national TV's it was a great success nationwide (in Italy), kids and adults alike were literally addicted. It was so popular in the island that even during the summer, beach bars and restaurants would tune their TV to DB so people would gather and watch it together (both tourists and locals). The motto was always "Hey, let's watch Goku!". I have many other Japanese anime that are in my heart since early childhood (at the age of 5 and 6 I was watching Saint Seiya, the violent Hokuto no Ken and the less known Tiger Man). But DB is the one that took over my heart definitely :D And yes I also hope they will continue DB Super beyond the last DBZ episode!
djh 1991 Huh I almost forgot a funny story. School would finish at lunch time, and soon after DB would start. My mother was the kind of busy woman who wanted to watch news or even soap operas at lunch time, during her break from work. However we only had 1 TV set and I would never miss an episode of DB,no matter what, and eventually she got addicted to it, especially when DBZ started. It was very awkward seeing my mother getting mad at Frieza for having killed Vegeta and grieving for him, saying things like "Oh no, why Vegeta! No Vegeta nooo!!! He was so cool ! ".

Well, I love both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. However, one thing that I loved way more in Dragon Ball than in Dragon Ball Z is that no matter who you were, you could become as powerful as can be if you trained hard enough. Compared to in Dragon Ball Z where pretty much saiyans were the only beings capable of being powerful. Well, other than the villains.

I couldn't agree more, I really liked Master Roshi, not just for comedy, but when he was being serious, I really like the comedy we get from Master Roshi, but I liked it even more when he was serious, he wasn't just comic relief, was was also a really strong and wise master, esspesily when Tien came around, some of the best stuff we saw from him.
After all the filler in DB made the show better. There were very few moments throwout the show I was like ok this is kinda boring and pointless, most of the moments were just parts of episodes. Unlike DBZ, where you could skip a lot of episodes and you wouldn't miss a thing, ha.

Growing up I always preferred Z as that was what I started with, I was aware that Dragonball existed, but it seems like this mysterious hidden part of the story (especially after the Piccolo Daimao arc starts because that's when the VIZ single issue comics ended and I wasn't able to read and/or watch the rest until much later). Now, however being that I am older, I generally prefer the story of Dragonball to that of Z, probably because I generally love Fantasy more than the Sci-fi genre. Also were you referring to when Goku beat Daimao or Ma Jr. when you said he beats Piccolo and thus fulfills Baba's prophecy? Because technically he did save the world from Daimao who was getting ready to destroy every city on the planet one by one and would have started with West City had Goku not arrived at the King's castle. I guess it could also be argued that he save the world again from Ma Jr., but I just wanted some clarification.
What about 10 reasons why you think DBZ is more popular than DB? It´s a video I would consider in the future, when I have gained enough experience through video editing.

1. It didn't just focus on the 🐒 (and the worst character in history - Vegeta) (still can't believe they replaced every original character so he can take the spotlight; honest to god, Frieza is a lot more tolerable)
2. It removed the obsession with power levels
3. It made the original characters relevant again (an example of Z's abomination is Krillin's story in the Buu arcs)
4. DB was funny again, and not the poor out of place jokes that Z had)
5. it removed everything cringe introduced in Z (like Mr. Satan, Great Sayaman were mostly forgotten)

@@ginta_san In a vacuum, I would agree but in the world that was portrayed it was near nonsensical and often betrayed characters' arcs or make Goku look incompetent. I will give two examples, 17 and Roshi. Roshi's development in the original manga climaxed when he bowed down to the new generation gracefully after he saw Tein, Goku, and Kururin grow into strong fighters. So when he comes back into fighting and overthrows Tien, it goes against his development and makes Tien look absolutely bad. 17 Makes everyone look incompetent, Goku was far stronger at the end of the Cell saga, and got to train with the best of masters and with other people equal to him which is telegraphed to us as being the best way to get stronger. Then comes 17 who apparently trained alone to the level equal to gods even though he isn't even a martial artist.

One of my favorite filler arcs in Dragon Ball is the adventure at the end where Goku and Chi-Chi have to find a way to extinguish the flames in Ox King's castle. We get to see more of Adult Chi-Chi being not annoying.

I completely disagree with the pacing and filler. While I enjoy the original manga story, the anime adaptation moved wayyy too slow for my taste and it was honestly boring.
As for the filler in DB, the majority of it dragged out too much and nothing really happened. Z had great fillers like the Otherworld Tournament, Gohan trying to balance his normal high school life with his Great Saiyaman persona, Goku and Piccolo learning how to drive, etc.
I do agree with everything else though. The characters felt more fleshed out and the comedy was great.

I feel as though the Dragon ball story from the beginning of Dragon Ball to the end of the Frieza saga was simply amazing! Fucking 10/10.Then the Android saga came. Which was was good, but I feel as though that's where it declined. The Cell arc, within the android arc though was really good.
I personally liked Z 's filler more. Gohan's training before the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa, Goku's training on his way to Namek, Vegeta searching in space for Goku during the 2yrs he was away after his battle with Freeza, Goku's search for the Dragonballs during the 9 day wait for the Cell games, General Tao crapping his pants seeing an adult Super Saiyan Goku and even seeing that he has a son just as powerful, not to mention Gohan going to high school, his training with Goten. Great stuff there
But DragonBall fillers had more life lessons than Z fillers (exception gohan filler during saiyan arc).

But personally I did not really like the life with Gohan but I liked the filler with Launch in it.The filler I didn't like is fake planet namek Garlic Jr and other world saga.The filler I did like was Gohan's high school arc.Goku and Piccolo with driving school and the ones before the Cell games

I look forward for a manga-accurate version of the original Dragon Ball anime to appear on Adult Swim's Toonami block. No filler sagas and no filler characters. Just a 100% manga-accurate version of the original Dragon Ball anime.

I never said I preferred one over the other. But they have things over each other. My favorite saga through both was the Namek saga followed by the 21st and 23rd world tournament. My favorite character is Vegeta, followed by Bulma, and Goku/Teen Gohan. My favorite top 3 favorite moments in dragon ball would be Vegeta's ssj transformation, Goku arriving to fight Vegeta, and Gohan's ssj2 transformation. What I'm getting at is my favorite moments, charecters, quotes, and soundtracks in Dragon Ball came in Z. Not to down talk Dragon Ball as it had my favorite fights and most emotional moments. But its all opinion. Also I can't be the only one who will charge up to become an ssj until the end of time whenever they get a chance.
As a life long fan of the entire Dragon Ball, z, super, and all manga stories.. i can honestly say there is no other show like this, it is uplifting and unique in just the right mix. I love the story progressions. The laughs are genuine, the emotion is real!! Thank you Geekdom101 for the videos of my favorite content! Keep them cranking out bro! After reading the manga you realize the fights and everything moves so much faster and well paced. This mostly relates to Z, but if you have only seen the anime I highly recommend you to read the manga.

You guys named the most important points on my mind, but here's another one: the progression from a light-hearted adventure story to a serious action-packed drama.
The first few arcs of Dragon Ball focus a lot on comedy, and no single life is wasted. But slowly we get several turning points in the series. Some of them happen in the Red Ribbon Arc: especially when Bora is killed by Tao Pai Pai. That death makes a big impact, because we never saw that before. And Goku actually has to go out of his way for an entire arc to gather the Dragon Balls and bring him back. And who could forget Krillin's first death? That's when death actually mattered in Dragon Ball. DBZ obviously had the advantage of being more extreme. It took the drama to a higher level from the start. But when you start off with a dark and serious tone... where can you go from there? The original Dragon ball, in a way, matured in a similiar fashion to Goku's growth.
Another point I just brought up: The Dragon Balls actually mattered, people had to work to collect them. In DBZ we only got that during the Namek arc. But other that that: they became a cheap plot convenience to fix collateral damage after every fight.
Z being serious from the start makes it better than the original as characters had actual character development and the story is far interesting throughout its run.the original had little of that in the 1st part which brings it down for me,tho even after Tao Pai it still lack a proper storyline and character development.
I'll say the dragon balls had a fine role in Z. the sayian arc was all about protecting the dragon balls and the namek arc was all about getting them.the cell arc I'll excuse it since the dragon balls were unavailable for most of the arc and they still had an important role.the buu arc the dragon balls were used as you said but did help the heros beat buu.

Everything. There are no 10 thing. The fights are better, the comedy is better, the drama is better, the storytelling is more tight and has less plot holes, the characters are written better, the filler is less boring. The music is even, since Kikuchi did both and he both scores are amazing. It is true that the Sayian-Namek arcs are the peaks of the series, but the Cell and Buu arc are so poor, it drags everything down.

I liked how DB actually gave love to all the side characters. Enemies were way more interesting and unique with powers and such, not just an enemy who can shoot a bigger phallic laser beam :P
I just love the adventurous aspect of DB. I love them both (DB and DBZ) but Goku as a child was fucking awesome to sit down and watch! I love the fights in DBZ and most of the characters as well so I can’t choose. I love them both.

Since piccolo was defeated, saving the world turned into a daily thing, maybe you can argue after Vegeta, but I stick with piccolo. Stuff got out of control when the dragon balls were easy to get.

djh 1991 In my case, I was introduced to DragonBall the first series in 1997 in Italy, but it was not on a national TV channel (it was not that popular yet), as it was aired on a local TV station in the autonomous island of Sardinia. I remember also my grown up brother in law watching DB and telling me "You know there is also a DragonBall comic in the bookshop?" (which is what introduced me to Mangas) and then he told me it was the same author of Arale, another great comedy made by Toriyama that I got to know before DB. DB was great fun and addictive, and I would never miss an episode. One peculiar thing is that almost nobody would refer to the anime as "DragonBall" but most people would refer to it as "Goku" and he was everybody's favourite character. When DB came to the national TV's it was a great success nationwide (in Italy), kids and adults alike were literally addicted. It was so popular in the island that even during the summer, beach bars and restaurants would tune their TV to DB so people would gather and watch it together (both tourists and locals). The motto was always "Hey, let's watch Goku!". I have many other Japanese anime that are in my heart since early childhood (at the age of 5 and 6 I was watching Saint Seiya, the violent Hokuto no Ken and the less known Tiger Man). But DB is the one that took over my heart definitely :D And yes I also hope they will continue DB Super beyond the last DBZ episode!
djh 1991 Huh I almost forgot a funny story. School would finish at lunch time, and soon after DB would start. My mother was the kind of busy woman who wanted to watch news or even soap operas at lunch time, during her break from work. However we only had 1 TV set and I would never miss an episode of DB,no matter what, and eventually she got addicted to it, especially when DBZ started. It was very awkward seeing my mother getting mad at Frieza for having killed Vegeta and grieving for him, saying things like "Oh no, why Vegeta! No Vegeta nooo!!! He was so cool ! ".

Well, I love both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. However, one thing that I loved way more in Dragon Ball than in Dragon Ball Z is that no matter who you were, you could become as powerful as can be if you trained hard enough. Compared to in Dragon Ball Z where pretty much saiyans were the only beings capable of being powerful. Well, other than the villains.

I couldn't agree more, I really liked Master Roshi, not just for comedy, but when he was being serious, I really like the comedy we get from Master Roshi, but I liked it even more when he was serious, he wasn't just comic relief, was was also a really strong and wise master, esspesily when Tien came around, some of the best stuff we saw from him.

Growing up I always preferred Z as that was what I started with, I was aware that Dragonball existed, but it seems like this mysterious hidden part of the story (especially after the Piccolo Daimao arc starts because that's when the VIZ single issue comics ended and I wasn't able to read and/or watch the rest until much later). Now, however being that I am older, I generally prefer the story of Dragonball to that of Z, probably because I generally love Fantasy more than the Sci-fi genre.
Also were you referring to when Goku beat Daimao or Ma Jr. when you said he beats Piccolo and thus fulfills Baba's prophecy? Because technically he did save the world from Daimao who was getting ready to destroy every city on the planet one by one and would have started with West City had Goku not arrived at the King's castle. I guess it could also be argued that he save the world again from Ma Jr., but I just wanted some clarification.
DragonBall was the only time I liked Goku. I hated Goku in DBZ.

My problems with dragon ball z is how they forget about the atrophomorphic animals,the mystisism and the martial arts tecniques and fighting
without any doubts dragon ball is better than z in action comedy story character usage everything in dragon ball is better than z characters like tenshinhan kuririn muten roshi yamucha werent toilet paper back then this is my biggest problem with z that is why i hate gohan vegeta trunks goten they just replaced these characters the characters which i really liked dbz is just saiyajin show

+Gaara 我愛羅 I don't know man, the fight choreography in DB was way superior than DBZ. It was all about tactics, strategy and fight posture. DBZ was all about power-ups and mindless kicking and punching.
I think the second tournament is the best mainly because of how it ends. The entire crowd all running to Tien and Goku was amazing. Just a great feel good moment.
