    Great job John! I'm running this saw as well, the old one had an adjustable piece that did this function, pretty sad when I realized that piece doesn't move forward on the new 12". Also, I had to cut the "dog ear" off the left side of the fence to get it cut on the 45 to the left, I was surprised that wasn't noticed during the design phase.

    I have the same saw, I ended up using blue tape to put out a template from the green rails and then transferred that to a piece of oak i cut out.. works great but you're method seems alot easier, especially for making multiple inserts.. will have to give it a try.. thanks for sharing John

      i really like it.. I originally bought it out of necessity. Small shop needed a saw that could go right up against the wall. At the time the Bosch wasnt out yet so it was the Hitachi, the Festool Kapex at 3x the cost or a cheap craftsman.. I do not regret the purchase at all

      unless you want to cut small parts or don´t want tearout in soft woods at the back

    • @CarlosGlatzos976
      @CarlosGlatzos976 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Catherine S. Todd, maybe if you have a sharp blade with many teeth for smooth cuts you may not need it at all. But I cut soft wood and do not have the money to always have the blade properly sharpened and use a blade with 48teeth (for rough cuts) and don´t want to change the blade every time so it is an improvement in cut quality then. Sure, hardwoods with a dull blade leave burn marks and is a no go. Additionally it prevents small parts to get grabbed by the blade and be thrown at me (or around), too, sometimes.

    • @CarlosGlatzos976
      @CarlosGlatzos976 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @tyvek05 Sure, but I don´t have the money to always have my blade sharpened properly or may use a blade with less teeth so I can benefit from a zeroclearance-insert. No tearout (or fewest as possible) at the back and bottom for me :)

    • @palehorse1021
      @palehorse1021 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you 100%. Also leave the blade down until it comes to a complete stop before raising it will help.

      Zero clearance is for straight and angle cuts when not using bevel on saws. The companies have to give both in design. Makita at lest use to make plates that could open and close as they were two eice design.

    I am a complete wood work novice and starting to buy tools for my workshop. I have just purchased the Bosch dual bevel sliding compound mitre saw and I am going to ask what is probably a very stupid question so here goes. Why is a zero clearance base so important or beneficial when the manufacturers don't put them on at the factory. Secondly I found that I had to tweek the angles on the blade on my brand new saw to achieve the perfect cut. I know I need a 80 - 100 tooth blade to help but is this usual practice? It was rewarding to set the machine and I have learnt a lot about my new beast!

    • @bluekdo
      @bluekdo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty new too, but perhaps I can explain it.
      A zero clearance insert helps eliminate chip-out/tear-out. When working with small pieces like trim, veneer or even larger pieces that require clean cuts , it saves you the step of scoring the other side. There are other benefits too however. Dust collection and safety come to mind.

  • @GatesideNurseryLtd
    @GatesideNurseryLtd 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good idea. I just screw a piece of wood onto the back plate. I see yours has holes to fix wood onto it as well. Then 1 piece of wood can do multiple angles. Am I right or being daft? Your videos are great all the same. Good craftmanship

    Which sliding mitre saw is best to crosscut out a 2 inch deep trench out of 4x4 inch timber. The trench or mortise is cross cut repeatedly using the depth gauge control, does it cut a flat bottom trench ie is the saw arm stable, which saw works best to cut out mortises. Thank you, great video.

  • @jeffharmed1616
    @jeffharmed1616 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for sharing. You are definitely much more experienced as a wood worker than I,so please don't take offence when I say that you don't need that bottom zero clearance since the saw teeth are cutting upward as they clear the stock bottom.
    I had to do a test run with my mitre saw on a scrap piece of plywood and, sure enough, even with the most aggressive cuts (maximum pressure), all the tear-out was at the back of the stock, the underside being a clean cut. Ergo no bottom zero-clearance piece necessary - at least in my case.

    • @JohnHeisz
      @JohnHeisz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It happens when you make videos without a script that you may not say exactly what you meant. What I really wanted to say is the one in the bottom stops that gap from filling up, and I thought about re-shooting the scene again to fix it, but didn't bother since most people think the one on the bottom actually helps for a cleaner cut.

    John, some great ideas. Ingenious!
    Is there any reason you couldn't attach a piece to the existing aluminum fences for the vertical fence? You do loose the thickness of the wood fence in the cut but it's minimal. To get a new ZCI you just keep moving the L & R fences together until you reach the max then attach another board. JimE
