Tip: When you play this game, use only one board, and place all checkpoints on the same board, in a configuration that causes the most crossing of paths. That way you will have the most player interaction which is the fun part).
minor rule correction possibly: after the planning phase, NOT all the cards are flipped over, just the first one; then the board events happen, then the 2nd one is flipped over, and so on
We brought back one of the optional rules from an earlier edition in order to correct two of the concerns which you brought up in one fell swoop: "Scavenger Hunt II "Before the game, deal out one pile of [upgrade] cards for each flag in the game except the last; each pile should contain as many cards as there are players. The first time a robot reaches each of the flags, the player to the left of that robot's controller may look through that flag's pile of [upgrade] cards and choose one which the robot receives." Not only does this add more upgrade cards to the game, but it also serves as a catch-up mechanism for bots trailing behind, which has led to some epic comebacks in our games. And in order to adapt the old "Turbo Wrenches" optional rule, a representative of Renegade Game Studios agreed with one of my suggestions in the BGG forum thusly: "If your play group wants more Energy, sure, house rule Batteries to give 2 Energy at a time." Implementing these changes in the new edition of the game takes it up to a 5 out of 5 for me.
I've had this for a long time. I place 'traps' around the flags to slow down the robots that first approach them in order to provide a catch up mechanic. The traps might relocate robots, reprogram them, give them junk cards in their deck, etc... Based upon this, I feel like there is room for an expansion that solves the 'runaway leader' issue.
Does this version of Roborally fit on your IKEA Kallax/Expedit shelves? I have an older printing that's a little too big because it had to accommodate the large map boards.
Good review Alex, i like the concept where you consider your own pros en cons, as well as what other players may experience. That gives a very good overall idea. Also the recommendations at the end are very helpful. So thanks a lot for your input here ! I haven't checked much of your reviews yet, but certainly will do !
Did you play the original Avalon one? I did played that one and had a great time, but I wasn't able to find that edition by that time and everyone agrees on later iterations being noticeable worse. In your opinion, how does this new version compare to previous ones?
I've been a RoboRally fan since '94. The original edition was actually Wizards of the Coast, but the Avalon Hill edition had a very similar rules set. The later Hasbro edition is widely viewed as having better rules, but much worse components. This new Renegade edition is the best of both worlds; essentially the magnum opus edition that I've been waiting for since 2016. Cheers!
Yeah, @@2besavedcom-7, my amalgamation of all the previous editions incorporated individual player decks, but kept all the old boards and option cards. Still, I really wanted to convert to the new option card format because having different costs for the options went a long way to fix the imbalance between the option cards. The Renegade edition, along with its two expansions, provides both quality boards and option/upgrade cards. I'm a happy camper now.
Robo-Rally with the 10x10 board is the One "You Really Don't Want To Play". it's just bad. for it is 'who is closer "signal tower" that card go first - there Can 'Be multiples at same distance'. Really stops the game. stopping & counting distance each registry phase, Sucks!! Wizards of the Coast is by far the best version. but any of the 8 players ones, will be good. The change to 6 player is where the game gets 'cheap' & 'lower quality'. Robo-Rally 2023 boards are great. minis not so good. a first player token is way better then "signal tower".
Properly designed maps help mitigate runaway leader by forcing the robots cross back into those behind who can shoot them. Mechs vs Minions is now out of print from Riot and they have no plans to do another wave any time soon unfortunately.

Good catch!

_Volt_ is a similar programmed movement game that appeals to me: more about interfering with the other robots. _Cactus Town_ is another I recommend.

Yes, the Renegade version is in a Kalax friendly size.
Wish they would just reprint 2nd edition and the expansions rather than screwing up the rules 😢

Agreee WoTC is the best by far if only they would reprint that!
So I played the original, and I have heard that later editions are not good (though I am not sure why). Which version does this reprint follow more?

I wish I could buy mechs vs minions for MSRP 😞.

@@Dwarfurious It's a retailer release, should be able to get at your FLGS or it's available at most of the usual online board game stores.
why do you not have a graphic for your game rating? it would look good to have a small animation or pop up, yes?
What is Max (mumble) Minions?
