Junk yards not the place of broken dreams but of dreams yet to develop. So much for mechanical philosophy! Great place to find machines you've never seen before and Colchester appeared to be a great choice. Enjoyed your adventures, as usual.
Another perfect start to a Sunday! I remember climbing up piles of cars in scrap yards looking for parts!! I loved it when I was 17. It was also the only way of keeping my first car going (Yugo!).
Brings back fond memories of exploring scrapyards in my teens and leaving with armfulls of 'very useful items', most of which were not needed but adorned my 1967 Ford Cortina 1600 MkII anyway.
I know this feeling, Steve!🤣 I remember sticking a Peugeot 205 “GTI” badge on my Nissan Sunny. I was bullied so much for this that I had to remove it!😆
GT85 is great but for regular winter applications try AC90. Available in 5 litres cans (need a cheap spray bottle), similar and as good as WD40 but generally much cheaper. ACF-50 is also recommended by many, however it is very greasy and needs careful application and is really designed for longer term application. I prefer to clean the bike regularly (pressure washer and "Rhino Goo" check it out also) and reapply AC90. With nine bikes including two used for Enduros, I know this regime works. Nothing worse than a corroded bike sitting festering in the garage! Apologies if this not exactly relevant to the channel, but hope it helps keep the Bonny looking good.
Scrap yards have changed and definitely got dearer, but good to see the Bonnie whole again. Glad you remembered what side of the road to drive on after all your time away 😄 Looking forward to hear what you think of the BSA. Saw it at the NEC, had a good look and sit on it and was a bit disappointed by how small it felt.
The green Triumph looks like an early Trident with knobblies fitted ! I had one years ago. There was a dispatch rider who put 200,000 on one in a very short space of time.
Have you ever thought about getting a bike cover to fit on while the bike is on the trailer? Stop the bike getting wet, and the other crud building up. Enjoyed the vlog as always. Remember visiting breakers yards with my father; happier times.
Enjoyable vlog as ever both, returning your bike to standard is a natural progression by many bikers and can lead to owning a classic bike with all the spot welds correct and accounted for.
Glad you liked Colchester (Camulodonum), take a walk round the town centre and the castle, well worth a look. The Foresters has certainly changed since the sixties when I knew it. Christmas shopping in wreckers yards is a lot more fun than any department store. 🙂
Great way to start my Sunday. I can’t help but feel so inspired to visit new places abroad when you talk about darting off here and there. @Freddie Dobbs, could you mention on your next podcast or even do a video on: - How you decide where your going next? - How do you find it financially possible? (I realise that’s a very personal question but I’m eager to change my life somewhat but imagine I can’t do it without the right financial plan behind me) - Have you thought about immigrating to Australia? (You seem excited when you hear others are moving there for the weather) - Lastly, what brings you back to the UK each time for short bursts? I’m 33, single, 12 years left on mortgage so in no way debt free 😂 bike test booked for Jan 23 and would absolutely love to do what you guys do! Many thanks! Steve
The training centre/work place you were next to is where I purchased my first motorbike - Lexmoto ZSX-R. Still riding it now 2 1/2 years later and loving it. Great video again and Bonneville looking good.
In the 60s we used to go to Dennis Heath Motorcycles AKA The Twickenham Graveyard...it was a great place for spares...everything was just laying around on the ground and you had a rummage around... There was also shelves of parts which they got for you...I can remember some great bargains second hand bikes and even an Indian Chief with running boards and a hand gear change by the tank going for peanuts..they also had loads of new spares as well.....halcyon days...
I was introduced to breaker's yards by my dad who was an old-time mechanic and reconditioner. One contained a lightly-rolled Maserati saloon, another an Austin Champ with - allegedly - a Rolls Royce petrol engine. This was heady stuff for a dreary North Wales in the 60s/70s! Re BSA 500: dad had the B33 the ordinary "get you to work" bike. The Gold Star was a kind of club racer. If I see the new bike competing in the Junior TT I'll respect it. If not, forget it, it's just a badge!
Great Filming again, I love the POV and filming techniques as well as the excellent content, You take the road trips so we don' have to, but we are all with you both along the way
Really looking forward to your BSA review Freddie & obviously how it compares to the Royal Enfield Interceptor & Bonny! Your visit to the bike breakers yard bought back memories for me to & just like you I remember climbing on top of cars just to unscrew a rear light or some bits of chrome lol! Due to health& safety you can’t do that anymore great days!
The surface rust on the disc might not be the salt , it’s probably from the rain , my car gets surface rust on the discs when it rains and has been sitting for a couple of days on the drive . Quite normal
Could never go back to the UK. Just looking at the weather! I love riding in the sun. I rode my 1981 KZ 550 LTD, Down from Kent 15 years ago to our home on Rhodes. Will definitely look up CMB. Oddly enough, We were back in the UK for a do. Went into a country village pub and nearly fainted with nostalgia.
Monika is too cute drum roll included. Colchester, Bergholt Rd is where my Uncle Ivan lived until he passed in 2020. The probate in Ipswich is handling his affairs. Love the pub ,the yard , dogs and the glimpse of Monika sipping. Austin TX 's weather is pretty much the same as your current flipping, sun /rain, cold/warm climate behavior.
@@FreddieDobbs The best thing to do with discs that have had salt on them is to use wire wool to clean them, not forgetting the outer edge then give the brake disc a good wash off with something like Muckoff and water. The next time the bike is used the pads will polish the disc back up. If you ride the bike on salty roads ACF 50 spray is brilliant for preventing corrosion, but never ever use it or anything oil based on the discs.
I didn't see him using any GT85 in the video. I did see him pick a can up though. I saw him pick up a glass of Guinness wonder if that Is any good for rusty discs. Good stuff the Guinness. Full of iron.
Hi both! Even back in the 80’s when I ran a motorcycle breakers with a mate of mine, we never allowed punters to wander free amongst our precious stock either! Good to see Colchester again, lived there myself for a while. Great video again, only wish they were longer! I’ll take a look at your podcast too. 👍
The pedal in the Vespa is the back brake😅 Left lever is the clutch, you change gear rotating the left handlebar, on the right you have the front brake and the throttle!
Looking forward to the BSA content! I’m a Colchester lad myself so great to see you down our way again! Colchester Kawasaki is such a great dealership of many bikes and brands! Royal Enfield, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Vespa, of course Kawasaki! I think you’ll have been there before, if not it’s such a treat to visit!
Freddie you are a breath of fresh air in a sea of generic content sir. You have brought a whole new, sometimes naive element to your passion, not excluding your unsung hero Monika who, without her own skill and expertise none of this would be possible 👏. I've been listening to your podcast 'Freedom Machines with Freddie Dobbs' - *highly recommended* and often find myself shouting at you whilst I listen in the car at your views on certain subject matter, but as we all share the common denominator of biking, it is good to have alternative and differing opinions on the 'what' and 'why' we do the things we do. Keep doing what you do sir and if you are ever up north around Yorkshire... 😉
A friend of mine owned the largest motorcycle breakers yard in the south of England, Lychett Motorcycle Breakers, back in the 1990's. Today a housing estate occupies the site where it once was. I used to help out, fixing bikes back into MOT able runners, as many bikes ended up there because of mechanically ignorant owners. sometimes just changing wheel bearings, brake shoes & pads, fixing fork seals, fixing the charging system, etc. was all that was needed to transform something that cost the yard less than £10 into £100's. Non running Suzuki TS100's, TS125's, GP100's & GP125''s with broken a disc valve woodruff key was a common cheap to fix turn around. Many real bikers knew this and would buy projects from the yard as soon ass they came in.
My local English pub is the only thing I miss about not living in the UK. Everything else that makes life worthwhile like Branston pickle and HP sauce is available in Europe!. When I lived in the UK I rode a motorcycle all year round, and in winter if you didn’t rinse the bike with cold water after a ride the salt would corrode everything. A full treatment with ACF50, or a similar product helps a lot.
Freddie, the reason the brake disc shows most rust is that they have a very high "iron" content. Which helps to provide friction. Don't worry, it's normal.
Good to see you both back in the UK Re the Vespa looked like a P range, so it's not that old. The pedal is the rear brake. Looking forward to more as ever.
I think the bsa looks amazing and feels far nicer than the Enfields to sit on (at a standstill).. I never thought I'd see the day when I actually saw a person riding one though, after a year of delays! Looking forward to hearing a "normal persons" review as opposed to all the professional journo's, which are often too analytical....
Morning Hope to see you guys in tenerife as we are flying out this Friday coming as well, and it's good timing as its starting to snow in the North East. enjoyable viewing as always.
Fantastic! I’ll be on a Triumph Speed Twin and at a lot of coffee shops, so look out for me, Malcolm!🙂 Have an amazing holiday- I bet you can’t wait to get away from the biting cold🥶🏝
The internet has made getting secondhand bike parts so easy, especially rarer stuff, but I do miss going to a bike breakers and being allowed free rein, used to pick up loads of non-standard parts for custom builds, that I wouldn't have thought of just by looking on Ebay. And of course there was also the friendly abuse from the breakers, especially if you were a regular customer.
Ahhh yes I remember those heady days Freddie when I climbed up in and out of scrap cars looking for bits but these days it just does not happen and I am sure parts are all taken off already to go "shame'' . Bike breakers though were never like that as far as I know ,Gotta say guy nothing like getting my caramel latte and sitting down to chill and watch your adventures just the best thing cheers all that remains is to get onto your website 😉👌👍
My first Hinckley Triumph was a 1994 BRG Trident 900 like the one you point out. I've also had a 96 Tiger900,and currently own a 94 Daytona Super 3,and a 96 900 Thunderbird. They're heavy, built like tanks, but great bikes with loads of character. You should check one out?
Welcome back. The green Triumph looks like an original Hinckley 900vtriple, from when John Bloor relaunched the marque. Very solid and if I remember the literature from the time, engine very over engineered and almost unbreakable. Interested in your thoughts on the new BSA. Safe, happy travels 👍
@@FreddieDobbs my brother had two of them. Loved them. We rodeto Switzerland when he had his second one in one day and he got off looking pretty fresh when I could hardly walk to the bar. A great distance bike.
Hi , your both always fun to watch ,a breath of fresh air no matter what your up to. OH, Tenerife are you going back ? if so do not to forget Monika,s Christmas decorations . Take care and have fun .😉
On the Vespa, the foot pedal is the rear brake. Those old ones are manual, so the left hand lever is the clutch as normal and you shift by rotating the whole left grip and lever assembly beside it. It looks a bit of a faff tbh, I'm going to keep my future Vespa simple and get a twist-and-go.
Been in the garage industry for 45 years. Many of those sprays have come and gone ... GT 85 is as good as useless ... Maybe your sponsored by them ... Who knows .... Get yourself some ACF 50 .. and look after your bikes with this .. was a game changer when it arrived. Original developt to tackle the salt spray on American jet based on aircraft carriers. .. it's truly remarkable stuff .. . It's expensive but so worth it .. just wish I was sponsored by them .🤠
the brake rust is perfect normal, for this time of year it just shows the iron content of the steel. just use them and they will be back to normal in no time
Freddie, don’t spray that gt 85 anywhere near your brake discs or pads or you wont have any !! Just take the bike out for a ride and after a few applications of the brake most of the surface rust should be gone ❤
If dont like the look of the oxidisation just get some brake cleaner spray and scotchbright pad and rub gently. Never ever treat discs with Anti corrosion. I cover my discs and empty can of acf 50 and paint it on tender parts like calipers. Just riding and applying the brakes ( trailing them will clear the rust. Spray with brake cleaner to get rid of dust. Many cars have oranged oxidised discs.
Vespa footpedal is back brake left grip and lever is clutch and 4 gears ,right grip is accelerator and front brake ,try mine, if u ever passing wigan ,mines a 200 and will reach the giddy speed of 70 with the wind behind d me
I had to read this three times just to soak in the controls- that’d take me a while to get used to! They’re so beautiful😍 Really appreciate it, thank you!🙂🙌🏻
Lots of salt on the Orwell bridge this morning. Have you seen that Enfield are ditching uk importer. They are going to set up their own dealer network. Fingers crossed we will get one in Suffolk.
Hi Freddie, good video. Get yourself some SAS maintenance oil it's £21 for five litres i have used it for years on my bikes and I use them through winter we use it in the engineering industry. You can use on all the bike plastic rubber. Better than SCF 50. Give it a go i don't think you will be disappointed. Keep the good work up. Stay safe both.
7:17 I forget the model but it's an early '90s one. I think it was a Trident. How much did you save on that part, Freddie? I wouldn't bother changing the levers back to stock. Why bother? Unnecessary expense. I bet it feels good to be back.
Please explore and report on the BSA's vibration between 60 and 75 mph. Would you tour on the continent with it? Miles-per-gallon would be nice to know, too.
The reason your brake discs are corroding is that the Brits seem to think that Cast Iron is much better material for braking than Stainless. I think someone said it was better for Baking and they miss-heard it.
Great to see BSA getting bikes to their dealers. I look forward to your review but I dont see the comparison with the Interceptor, one being a twin the other a single. I did think of a Classic 350 but prefer the idea of the bigger 650 single for more low down power.
I see you're not running the screws to hold the side panels on, which is probably why you lost the last one. If you want some nice ones, TEC make a nice little C&C'd black anodized set for a very reasonable price, knurled so you can undo them by hand instead of with a screwdriver. I'd recommend, I have them on my T100 and they're invisible when fitted, even more so than the hole you have there currently. And unlike zipties, you don't have to replace them every time you need to get to the fusebox.
Enjoyed your video as usual Freddie, Will you keeping your bike on the road throughout the winter, I like the idea of using the oil to keep the worst of the rust away I will certainly be doing that this year. Thanks to you both, look forward to your vids
Hi Freddie, as good as gt85 is you need to try Acf50 as it lasts longer and does a much better job of inhibiting corrosion. Great channel, keep up the good work 👍 don’t use it on your brake discs!🤣(or gt85 for that matter)
The bsa stand was virtually abandoned when I was at the nec bike show last Friday. Like many of electric bike stands. I thought RE had the best stand as well as bmw and suzuki. R1250gs at £22k gulp

This is very interesting because someone’s just commented to say he knows of one that did 200,000 miles!😳
@@FreddieDobbs my brother had two of them. Loved them. We rodeto Switzerland when he had his second one in one day and he got off looking pretty fresh when I could hardly walk to the bar. A great distance bike.
Welcome back Freddie & Monica can't wait to see what you both get up2 now you're back 😀
Thank you so much🙂
Another great vid should try ACF 50 on your bike much better protection 👍
Hi , your both always fun to watch ,a breath of fresh air no matter what your up to. OH, Tenerife are you going back ? if so do not to forget Monika,s Christmas decorations . Take care and have fun .😉
One week in Tenerife, so I’ve had to restrict Monika’s Christmas decoration buying!😆
There is a breakers yard of epic proportions near Rome’s Olympic Stadium ,I’ve never seen so many bikes in the one place.
My dad used to take the scrapyard, he used to throw parts over the wall and go pay for an ashtray and id run around and collect it! Haha
🤣🤣
On the Vespa, the foot pedal is the rear brake. Those old ones are manual, so the left hand lever is the clutch as normal and you shift by rotating the whole left grip and lever assembly beside it. It looks a bit of a faff tbh, I'm going to keep my future Vespa simple and get a twist-and-go.
Welcome back to the UK, quite a contrast from winter in Spain !.Your Fiat 500 is a great wee workhorse 😄
It’s a shock to the system, Ian😆 The Fiat somehow feels as good as the day I bought it!
Been in the garage industry for 45 years. Many of those sprays have come and gone ... GT 85 is as good as useless ... Maybe your sponsored by them ... Who knows .... Get yourself some ACF 50 .. and look after your bikes with this .. was a game changer when it arrived. Original developt to tackle the salt spray on American jet based on aircraft carriers. .. it's truly remarkable stuff .. . It's expensive but so worth it .. just wish I was sponsored by them .🤠
the brake rust is perfect normal, for this time of year it just shows the iron content of the steel. just use them and they will be back to normal in no time
Freddie, you need to edit out cup in hand while driving mate, that can be seen as driving without due care and attention.....
Thanks for the heads up!
You would think he would know that…..or being Freddie, maybe not
Freddie, don’t spray that gt 85 anywhere near your brake discs or pads or you wont have any !! Just take the bike out for a ride and after a few applications of the brake most of the surface rust should be gone ❤
Thanks- I’ll remember this🙂🙌🏻🙌🏻
If dont like the look of the oxidisation just get some brake cleaner spray and scotchbright pad and rub gently.
Ohh Freddie, not liking your British winters. Looking forward to your adventures with the BSA! You guys are terrific 👌
It’s a shock to the system, Steve!😆🥶
Thank you🙂🙌🏻
Hi Freddie, good video.
I’m not familiar with SAS- really appreciate the heads up, I’ll save this🙂
@@FreddieDobbs you will thank me.
Great video you two, thanks for sharing it. Freddie, the foot pedal on that old Vespa is the back brake. 👍👍
7:17 I forget the model but it's an early '90s one. I think it was a Trident.
How much did you save on that part, Freddie? I wouldn't bother changing the levers back to stock. Why bother? Unnecessary expense.
I bet it feels good to be back.
Hey Freddie, just oil your discs to prevent rust build up. 😂😂😂
He will probably take your advice……hope he doesn’t end up in A&E
The triumph in the racing green is a trophy or trident, from the T300 series of triumph.
Be sure to spray that GT85 on your brake pads and discs and let sit for 15 minutes to flash off before getting wet
Don't forget to put a screw in side panel, cheers Bill Bolland 👍
Nice motorcycle junkyard. I used to pull parts too. I’m sure kids don’t do that anymore.
Freddie you should have a screw at the bottom of the side panel cover
Temporarily added a cable tie- I’ll order a screw🙂
Tory boy's here, let's charge him double.
Damnit Fred, you were just around the corner again and still didn't pop in for a coffee.
Zip-tie would be a good idea for the panels
Enjoyed your video as usual Freddie, Will you keeping your bike on the road throughout the winter, I like the idea of using the oil to keep the worst of the rust away I will certainly be doing that this year. Thanks to you both, look forward to your vids
Hi Freddie, as good as gt85 is you need to try Acf50 as it lasts longer and does a much better job of inhibiting corrosion. Great channel, keep up the good work 👍 don’t use it on your brake discs!🤣(or gt85 for that matter)
Bit of a mystery with the Forrester Arms. I believe one of the landlords went missing years ago.
Oh wow!😳
The bsa stand was virtually abandoned when I was at the nec bike show last Friday. Like many of electric bike stands. I thought RE had the best stand as well as bmw and suzuki. R1250gs at £22k gulp
Wow, I didn’t expect this re BSA and the NEC😳 The GS prices are becoming seriously huge- into quite nice car territory
All Year Motorcyclist put a bsa on test yesterday. From Colchester too. Think it's 1st one from a rider
Did you like it??🙂🏍
@@FreddieDobbs It's a nice looking bike but I have classic 500 trials and 350classic already! If you are not aware of channel. You tube. All Year Motorcyclist. He liked it but he has 500classic and triumphs too.
Exactly same red and chrome that you had in Lithuania. Good video by the way Freddie.
Freddie you should get yourself some Scot Oiler FS365 anti corrosion spray. Great stuff.
What's that pedal on the vespa,? Back brake, the early ones had twist gears , hard to find a good one, silly prices for a good one ,😁👍
