I know what you mean about not liking to record on tape. But I like how my very old Sony Z7U would record HD footage to both tape and CF card at the same time. I liked having that safety net incase my CF card became corrupted.
I just won one of these for $74. Thank you for this video. I plan on re-selling it. Didn't think I was going to win the auction but nobody sniper bid so I got it for $54 not including shipping.
I bought an XM2 for R50...about $3...from our local Hospice. Looked like it took a dive with the tape compartment open. I carefully bent the mechanism linkages back untill I could operate the loading compartment and the tape door and now working perfectly. The pinch roller still perfectly in place and looks like this camcorder only recorded 4 tapes...was included in the carry bag I got with the deal. Only problem is the wireless remote is very irratic. Sometimes it works and tomorrow it's not. Best optics I've ever seen on a camcorder.
theres another common problem on the Canon XL1 and XL1s where one if not a couple of the fuses managing the main power to the lens and VTR will blow, On my XL1s I believe the fuses for the lens/camera on mine is blown. I've heard bridging or replacing the fuse with wire is a good way to bypass it, Any suggestions on how someone would go about doing this? I have experience in solder but these are absolutely small points on the board to solder to. Will bridging the two points in between the fuses fix this problem?
It can as it has av out. It's only 480i so low resolution. Doesn't matter how you process of up scale it will always be a 720x480 image no matter what you do with it. It's a big heavy lens. My little habdycam I shoot these videos on will run circles around this any day if the week. It will shoot a 3840x2160p picture. In the SD days it held its own but the mist basic camera these days will blow this away.
Yes I am fully aware of this. Same as the sony decks with the plastic gears. Remember I am the guy saying that nobody in 2023 should be recording anything on tape, but as soon as I say that I get jumped on from the tape crowd. The same tape crowd that cry like a spoiled child when their tape that they thought was recorded correctly was torn up by the camera and the recording on it was lost.
I borrowed one of these from a friend of mine about 21 years ago and was very pleased with the video quality for a standard def camera.

Can the camera be used just as a camera? It looks like the optics are pretty good.
