- @WaybackRewindCanon's line of interchangeable lens Mini-DV cameras, including 2 High Definition versions. Canon made 5 of these cameras between 1998 and 2008. The XL1s and XL-H1s in particular are tested and evaluated. The XL-1 was considered broadcast quality for standard definition. This series had some of the most beautifully designed camcorders ever. Wish that body would make a comeback.
The ergonomics were really good. I'd like to see another camera in this series.

I still use the XLH1s and have four of them. They all record uncompressed video from the SDI port to Blackmagic Video Assist monitor recorders to SD cards. People still like the picture quality so I keep on using them.

@@WaybackRewind I usually record just slightly under exposed with -3 gain setting. Camera sharpening in the camera set to zero and the camera on factory settings. The image looks rather crappy. By using Blackmagic Davinci Resolve software the uncompressed file gives plenty of room for manipulation in post production. I don't white balance the camera doing that in post as well.
I also add the audio section in Davinci Resolve is amazing. This means you can tweak and get quite good results out of the camera mike. Davinci Resolve 18.5 uses AI technology to recognize human voices, then eliminating non human voice sounds. I recently shot a lecture using camera mikes with the sound of rain on the roof. Davinci removed the sound of rain amazingly well. Uncompressed Canon XLH1s video and audio plus Davinci Resolve work well together.
You reinforce something I always say and that is use as little camera processing as possible and do it all in post. That is more true now than ever as today's software is far better than what any camera can do. Even modern cameras have limited processing compared to what the computer can do.

Picked up that DV XL1S in a UK auction in the last few weeks and yeah the sticky rubber is a gripe but hopefully it's operational. Came with a large metal Canon branded box which is probably worth at least half what I paid for the camera kit. Got a broadcast level Sony hopefully coming too which I got at an equally good price :D

@@mumblety96 The good news is that you only need a 3G SDI and not the more expensive 4K. If you don't need a screen and are confined to a studio, then something like the Blackmagic Ultra Studio Recorder would work.

But since this camera doesn't have a screen I would probably pay a little extra to get a recorder with a screen and fully portable like the Blackmagic Video Assist.

cool I use to have the CANON XL2
We have a Canon ZR40 that we had not used for the last 10 years. I pulled it up and it is in beautiful condition. Batteries charged up as well as the wall charger works. We can watch the videos on the camera. And we tried to hook it up to our LG screen TV 2021 vintage. Everything is black and white on it on the TV. Do you know if there is a way to get the color going?are there new adapting cords?
Congratulations on the ZR40. I don't know of any normal reason the image would be in black and white. Something is not right. I'd try normal trouble shooting methods, a different cable, a different TV. And try a different camera on same TV. If the problem only happens with the ZR40 something may have gone bad inside the camera. I hope not for your sake. Best case scenario is a bad cable which is easy to replace.

Hi, are new MiniDV cassettes still being produced or is there only remaining stock to buy?
That is a good question. The only fact I could find is that Sony stopped manufacturing mini DV tapes very recently in 2023. It is likely that all we have left is new old stock. They are still for sale at reasonable price in 2024. I suggest you stock up if you need them. VHS-C went out of production in 2016 and are still available new old stock, but getting scarce and expensive.

I talk about the XL2, but I do not own one. It has native support for 16:9 and the improved view finder but is still standard definition. It sits in between the 2 cameras that I do have the XL1s and the XLH1s.

I've been trying for awhile to find a list of the exact differences between the XL1, 1A and 1S.
I typed an answer for you but it disappeared. As far as I can tell the XL1A is not actually a separate model but the "A" just identifies it as the American or NTSC version. The differences between the XL1 and the XL1S are well documented. Basically although they look the same the XL1S is basically all new on the inside.
First, the picture it produces has been substantially upgraded. There is a +4dBi sensitivity, which increases its low-light capability. The gain control now runs from -3 to +30 dB. It is now possible to configure the performance of the camera to your individual specifications. There is a sliding menu cover below the control wheel, which allows the user to adjust color phase, sharpness, color gain, black level to their own satisfaction. There are now zebra patterns, which can be selected which can be variable between 80 IRE, 85 IRE, 90 IRE, 95 IRE and 100 IRE. The White Balance control now has added three settings allowing the user to store three different color balance settings in addition to either daylight, tungsten or automatic. Canon has also added a new "clear scan" function, which allows the camera to synch its picture to the different cycles encountered when photographing TV and computer screens.

Will I still get uncompressed quality like someone who used the SDI port. I'm asking this because the xlh1 does not have a hdmi port. So I want to buy this alongside with a clearclick ultimate but I'm thinking of the quality that will come out through the av
What I would do is get an SDI to HDMI Converter and run that into the Clearclick. I have such a device.

The only downside is you have another device and it requires power, so you need to rig something up to mount it. But my last choice would be to use the analog video as you will not get the uncompressed quality.
its easy to use my i phone thats no fun i still use my mini dv ive got loads of blanks i upload them quality is great with a firewire it looks more movie like than pure digital i love the look of tape

Can we use the lenses in today's camera with Any adapter
Not really. There is an adapter to allow you to use Canon EF lenses on the XL camcorder, but as far as I know there is no modern camera that these lenses will fit.
That said with 3D printing and hacking the software anything ia possible, but I doubt it would be worth the effort.

It's better to consider using Canon C100/300 camcorders instead of it. Besides, these lenses were designed for another sensors than used in modern DX and FX cameras (1/3" or smth like that)
@user-dc8zv8to3b Yes a Canon C100/300 would be better in every way and probably cheaper. But these cameras can bring joy in owning what used to be a $10,000 camera.

Hi, i get the Message Check lens and also there is a clicking, i tried to clear the contacts but still get the Message, anyone know how to fix?
It sounds to me like your lens is bad. That happens a lot. There are also a lot of these cameras out there that you can buy cheaply for parts. It would be easier to buy lenses until you get a working one. That's what I would do. Thanks for watching.
hhhhhhh the view finder of this cannon camera is white and black no color 😊 but it's look pretty in 2001 king of camera
I had to go double check but both of these cameras actually have color viewfinders. The XL1 is very small though. The XLH1 is a bit larger at about 2 inches but you need good eyes to see it.

Yes, the XLH1 and XL H1s both shoot in 1440 x 1080i natively.

Yes the newest one is from 2008. They are very old.
wath is the diference XL1 and XL2
The XL2 is a ground up redesign of the XL1 although it looks similar.
Main difference is it has a new 20x lens versus the 16x on the XL1. It has oversized CCD with native support for 16:9 and it has the 2 inch hybrid viewfinder that. (if you have good eyes) can be flipped open to use as a screen.
The XLH1 has all these same features but also high definition so the XL2 is right in the middle as you can imagine.

As far as I remember, XL2 could record 24 frames per second natively (like all cinema cameras). I had XL1 and wished it had this feature.
After all the wire connections u didnt show us the results from the camera. Then this experiment might be tagged useless then
Rather than make this video super long, I made two more videos that show the results from the camera and compare it to the tape.
