  • We decided to take all of my loose sandpaper and put it into one place. This week we're making a Sandpaper Organizer for the shop!
    GET PLANS FOR THIS PROJECT!: iliketomakestuff.com/product/...

    I don't know about you, but I have a lot of sandpaper and it doesn't have a good home. I have sheets of sandpaper in drawers, discs in a box, and sponges falling off shelves. It's about time I get all of those pieces together in one sandpaper organizer.
    Because this storage unit would be relatively small and have many points of internal connection, we decided to use 1/4" MDF. We wanted to keep this project as small as we could so that it could fit on small project panels you could get at your local home center. It ended up being a little bit bigger than a 2'x4' sheet. I followed the cut list and had all of the think pieces ready to go.
    The organizer would have an open box on the top for sanding discs, two taller columns on either side for sanding sponges, and a set of shallow shelves for sand paper sheets. To connect everything together, I decided to cut dados in the thin material and use wood glue with little dabs of CA glue to quickly hold the elements together while the wood glue dried. Once I had all the pieces in place, I let the wood glue dry for a few hours.
    In the top section meant for sanding discs, I wanted to add some simple dividers made from the same 1/4" MDF material. I cut a divider for each grit of sanding discs that I had, 6 in total. To better identify each grit of sandpaper in the box, I used my Glowforge laser engraver to etch the different grits onto the dividers. This is completely optional of course, you could simple write the numbers with a marker.
    At this point, you have a simple and functional sandpaper organizer. But there was one function that I thought would be kinda cool. I have a lot of sheet of high-grit sandpaper, and I never need the entire sheet. Josh modeled up a quick and easy holder for a circular fabric blade that would run on two aluminum poles. This device would act just like a traditional craft paper cutter, but mounted to the front of the sandpaper organizer. I placed a piece of left-over cutting mat under the cutter assemble, and now I can cut bigger sheets that are stored on the shelves, into smaller pieces as I need them.
    I hope this project helped you wrangle all of your loose sandpaper into one place. This was a much-need3d solution to a messy problem that we had. I hope that you check out the digital plans we have available for this project up above, and make it a fixture in your own shop!

    My favorite part of this is realizing that after years of making stuff, Bob is still just now getting around to organizing basic materials, makes me feel better about the state of my shop :D

    what we had in shop class at highschool was a hacksaw blade mounted to a board that worked well for cutting straight lines in your sandpaper and rarely dulled. it also had lines and a stop for when you were cutting for certain sizes depending on what you needed the paper for

    My suggestion would be to add a vertical groove in the bottom of the side sanding block covers so you could see how many are left. Neat project - well contained.

    If you start to go through the circular blades...you could make a small slot in wood for a razor blade guide? This way there is no special blade needed...just the Maker Knife that is in everyone's pocket :)
    Always enjoy the videos Bob!

    To cut the edge rabbet, you can tape a piece of sacrificial timber to your fence with some carpet tape and raise the dado blades until they're just touching the side of the sacrificial piece.

  • @Photokapi
    @Photokapi 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like your cutter idea, I've also seen it done with a hacksaw blade mounted just barely off of the surface because it won't dull as quickly and you can just tear it like a piece of wax paper.

    For the cutter I use a hexa blade and screw it flat to the board. Cutting sandpaper with shape blade won't last long since the blade will be sand down apparently :)

    I have a folio that I keep the sheets I use for metal polishing. From 220 to 2000 in paper and cloth. I take the folio to the work and put each grit back as I finish with it. It saves a lot of steps and time.

  • @williamreed1512
    @williamreed1512 ปีที่แล้ว

    To cut sandpaper I screw a hacksaw blade to an edge, and a piece of wood as a stop that will make the size sheet i want by simply holding the paper, and pulling it over the blade to cut it.

    I like it! If I give it a go, the one thing I'm going to add is a sight window in the sanding block shoot. That way I know how many I have left when I decide to start purging old blocks.

  • @JacobRumsey

    I’m excited to make this! I like winging it on shop stuff, particularly organization, but that is a spectacular design!
    Also, if anyone is interested in using a 3-d printer, a lot of public libraries have them available to members. They need to be reserved, but they’re available in most cities.

  • @lachy1709
    @lachy1709 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey bob, I find that cutting sandpaper from the backing, then even ripping the last bit through the grit, helps with prolonging the blade life when cutting sandpaper. I’ve also used a relatively blunt knife in that way to cut sandpaper
    Never mind you cut it from the back anyway

    Many thanks for the idea on storing RO discs upright stacked left to right with labelled separators, with sheets stored flat underneath. Something to try next time you’d like to do a dado (or however it’s spelled) on the edge of a part is to clamp a block of scrap wood to your guard so that you can ally up the blade right next to it. Possibly even have it touch it slightly to get a better line.

    As usual, cool project Bob. I like the idea of the loose discs dividers rather than fixed ones. That solve the problem of how big a gap should be left for those frequently 180-220 grit used ones and how little for the less frequently used ones. Simple solution to that problem. And of course all other storages incorporated in one. Thanks for the video Bob.

    If you want a cutter and you don't have a 3D printer you can use a Hacksaw blade as a sheet paper cutter. Just mount the Hacksaw blade off the board with a couple of washers and then it works just like a plastic wrap or tin foil cutter.

    That is an awesome addition to any shop! There is a similar version on Pinterest for dispensing tape. They used hardboard for the sides and what looks to be a piece of 1"x2" pine in the front and back. The rolls of various tape roll are in individual dispensers put are hung together. You can see the 1/4 of each roll and using a hack saw blade cut up into pieces and then screwed to the front of each one. I think they used one or two washers against the pine, then the saw blade section and then screwed on. It is nice if you only want to use double-sided tape, you remove just that roll and the rest stay on the wall or cart.

    Have you done, or do you plan to do, a bits video on the different types of wood? Like the differences in weights, make up, effective cost, and general use things that each would be good for? With all the wood working you do it seems like it'd be a great video to make, especially if some people wanna try woodworking themselves but don't know a whole lot about the little things like, as mentioned above, the differences between wood types.
