Shop Work: How to make Fisher's Flip Cart

I reinvented the flip cart with a clever new design so that it's not only a space-saving mobile cart, but it's also easier to use than any other design I've seen! The surface is locked and completely stable with just a single latch and there's integrated power so you no longer have to mess with power cords for your tools! Now you can switch between tools in a matter of seconds and not have your work flow interrupted while you search for an outlet to plug in your machine. A removable front face-plate allows for quick and easy access to the integrated power strip, and a handy storage drawer is below that can hold all your tool accessories. This is truly the best piece of shop furniture I have in my workshop!
If you'd like to build this for yourself, the plans are available on my website and can be found at www.FishersShopOnline.com/plans
    FAQ:
    Q. I'd like to know how big of a tool I could mount on the cart, so what's the dimensions of the opening?
    A. The dimensions of the cart's opening (above the shelf to the upside down surface) = W: 24”, D: 20", H: 19" The plans can easily be altered to accept wider or taller tools.
    Q. Aren't you worried that the sides my splay out and drop the flip surface?
    A. Not really. If you use quality plywood, it will be quite rigid. But if you're concerned about that, you can always leave your pivot pipe a bit longer, have your black iron pipe threaded on the ends, and screw on some end caps that would prohibit the sides from moving out.
    Q. What's the weight this cart will hold?
    A. My disc sander is roughly 85lbs and my spindle sander is around 35lbs. I used rather cheap sanded plywood and there's no indication that I'm anywhere near a weight problem. If you use higher quality plywood, you'd be able to load it up even more.

Out of the 2,873 different videos on TH-cam for flip top tool carts, yours is the only only one that:
    1. Has integrated power that remains connected
    2. Is overflowing with absolutely hysterical commentary.
Your videos, this one in particular, has humorous comments so often that I have learned that I cannot consume any beverage while watching your videos. No matter how many times I have seen them, there are some comments that still make me laugh out loud. The neighbors dog house being dismantled for the plywood, awesome... Dude, you have such a twistedly great sense of humor. And that is written in the greatest of admiration....
Like what you do very much. Thanks 😊

Maybe we should invent some hold downs for the stuff! @atomictyler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@s4nari I mean just because some youtubers have those $600 tools doesn't mean it's the one and only way to do it. They're using what they have available. There's very few builds I've seen that couldn't be done with a much less expensive tool. Lots of the people making videos do woodworking for a living, so they've got the expensive tools because time is money for them and they're making many pieces. If you can take the extra 30 minutes then they can be done, and most videos suggest cheaper ways of doing the same thing.

I just finished my build of this using your plans. It came out well, but it was intended to be both a learning experience for me as well as shop furniture. I have a Rigid spindle sander and a Dewalt planer (92lbs) on it. I did put the drawer slides in before I put the top and back on and while I forgot to remove the jokers from the deck before setting the drawer front I didn’t use them. I was afraid that wouldn’t have been funny. I just rubbed some finish on it and hope to use it on a project very soon. Thanks for all your work.

I slipped and accidentally bought a Rigid belt spindle sander and then had to build this thing. What a great project to work on. Only had one issue, my Delta Planner was about 3/4 of an inch too tall so i had to figure that out. I could have taken off the crank handle to let it rotate all the way but figure I'd lose a part or two. So I ended up cutting off the top 6 inches and splicing a 3 inch piece in the middle of the sides with glue and pocket screws. It worked out pretty well. For those considering this build they should keep the height of the tools in mind when doing it.
Thanks for the opportunity on solving a space issue in the shop and all the great videos you put out. Time to get busy with those jig plans I got from you.

Made your Flip Cart, but a little different. I only wanted to mount my Dewalt planner. The main modification were the initial cuts as the overall width would be 32". After getting a 3rd grader to help me with the math, I followed the plans and it came out great. I only needed the one tool so the flip side is a good work or outfeed table. I did put in a counter weight so it would be easier to pull up the 100lb planner. Keep the honest humor coming, Thanks Drew!

@@kenmulvihill1230 Ken, I'm not as young as I used to be either, so I used an old lead window counter weight. Approx 45#, these were used in windows back in the day(way back). This one was about 15"Lx3"Dx2"H with holes on each end tucked away in the space where the power was. Just one of those things lying around the shop that I had not used for years but could not throw away. Sorry, I know this doesn't help much but keep looking around you will find something that will work. UPDATE! As we all know "good enough" never is, I purchased a Rikon 6" Jointer that has a 30" table which mounted perfectly opposite the planner so I removed the counter weight. Good Woodworking to you and all. Obeejaun

I like how you explained the wiring of the plug. Now some on here would say it's pretty obvious what wire goes where but Im pretty stupid when it comes to electrical work lol. I know on and off and that's about it.
    I'm still learning though.
    Enjoyed the video.

I just successfully constructed your Flip Cart. A great project. And, yes, I made a few errors too, but nothing my chain saw and a roll of duct tape could not fix. Might I offer some observations that others might learn from. (1) To make just one cut of the 1/2 inch pipe I moved the pipe “Tee” connector off center (2) For a bit more strength,I cut a rabbit for the cart bottom and 3/8” dados for cart shelf with glue and screws. Some cut adjustments necessary. (3) My spindle sander would be a bit tight so I cut the cart shelf 5” instead of 6” and reduced the height of the drawer by 1 inch. (4) To protect wiring in the flip shelf I installed metal shims over the saw cuts. (5) To keep the electrical cord from chafing I installed a rubber grommet inside the end of the 1/2 inch pipe. (6) Before installing the 2 x 4 supports I created a paper template of my spindle sander footprint to make sure the mounting bolts would fit. Finishing with a couple of coats of Hokie Maroon and Orange covered up my minor goofs.

I slipped about four days go as well. I bought the Ridgid Oscillating Sander and the bigger Rikon Strip with 6" disc sander. It was awful. Truely awful. I love that your videos have one great happenstance joke. The buffalo birth on the Serengeti still makes me smile.
The iron pipe T-joint thing is genius. The entire wire path and the fancy 45 degree angles where the flip top connects are beautiful. I also really enjoyed watching you use the combo square. You looked like you were a master at using it for marking layout.

I really like your latching mechanism. I want to build a flip top insert to my shop bench to integrate my miter saw into the bench. It needs to flip out of the way to allow me to break down sheet products. I learned a lot watching this. thanks a million.

Finished mine. Had Home Depot cut and thread pipe to 14 and 12 inches and added a cap on one end and a bushing on the other end. It won’t splay out for sure now.
Also add washers between the flip top and the sides to make it turn easier but that probably was unnecessary. Very happy with the results.

      @FishersShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Awesome! Yup, you did exactly what I have been recommending to people that were concerned about it splaying out over time. Mine hasn't budged at all so far, but it's good peace of mind for those that are worried about it.

Just purchased your PDF. Quite complete and well worth the cost. Looking forward to the build for a drill press and band saw. I used Sketchup to reproduce your design and found that I can't use the drawer because the band saw is too tall. But since your design rotates just 180 degrees, it allows using stabilizing gussets instead.

I've watched this at least 20 times now, finally got the DeWalt 735 planer that will go on the other side of my Ridgid spindle sander. I bought the plans but in order to have any extra space I have to change all the horizontal dimensions. Just hoping I do the calcs right or I'll be looking for your neighbors new dog house for more plywood. Love the out takes. Love your work.

Sure thing! Our Home Depot here in Tampa, FL just started carrying Radiata Plywood and I'm excited to try it out and I'll be using that to build mine. I'm intending to build two at the same time. This will allow me to disassemble the large bench I have in my shop taking up so much room. Again, thanks and I'll try to either record some of the build or at the very least take photos.

  • @dougliberman

This is a great cart! I just built 2 of them based on the plans I purchased from your website. On one of them, I added 3/4 MDF that is 24" wide instead of 20". I put a 45 degree edge on the front so that it could receive jigs I have made (like a mounted pocket hole jig) that all have french cleats to attach to the wall. I can take them and slide them right into the 45 degree edge. I then cut grooves for Matchfit clamps into the surface. I can use the clamps to secure the french cleat jigs or just as a work surface. I was going to add wings (like on your miter saw cart) to one, but I'm concerned that they will pull the sides out too much. I will just build one that I can attach to the Matchfit table and put them side by side. Very flexible design and a nice project to build. Making 2 a time saved me time since all of the complicated cuts and measurements were just traced on the second ones.
