- With the world's swimming body, FINA, announcing its policy on transgender athletes, a debate has begun as to whether it's the right call. Transgender athlete Hannah Mouncey tells us what is problematic about the plans for an 'open category'.

How can either Hannah or Lia feel good about themselves when they clean house at competitions? There is no challenge.
Someone who can feel good about doing what they do can only be delusional or utterly selfish.
Since when did they clean house? Lia won a single event, she was the 8th best distance swimmer in the US pre transition and the 32nd best at 500yrds in the US. After a year dropped to 488th. Whatever advantage she had is pretty much gone.
Her times are on par with the other competitors if you look at all her other races through the 2021 season.

"If it came to the science of it..." Fina ruled based on advice from scientists. That's why it has the weird age cut off as they determined that the advantages start in puberty and not all are reversed with hormone treatments later on.
Unbelievable. He says only listen to trans athletes as "they've been through the transition so know about it" but ignore the opinion & experience of female athletes who have lived their whole lives as females. If a female can't possibly know what it's like to be trans, how can he possibly know what it's like to be female?
Kids get into good high schools based on sport, they have to compete against boys now?

Going through puberty as a biological male has an advantage. Anyone saying otherwise is denying science or being willfully ignorant. Why not eliminate women’s sport?
FINA did the right thing. If we have to decide between being inclusive or being fair, when it comes to competitive sports, being fair makes more sense.
If this was really about inclusiveness it wouldn’t exclusively effect women’s sport.

I mean people are treating it like its a one size fits all issue, when its more of a case by case situation. 16 years theyve been able to compete at an elite level and so far none have even gotten a podium at the Olympics, 2 winners exist in the US, both of which have performance/times on par with the other competitors. I think the issue is far more nuanced than the media leads you to believe.

An open category isn't a trans woman's category. The open category would allow anyone to compete. It wouldn't be just trans women. It would be filled up by non bianary people, people with intersex disorders and allies who want to compete to show support. It would be another route to the Olympics, Championships and world records. It will be filled up the first year they create it. It will also give trans people who don't want to medically transition or who have just begun transitioning and can't meet testosterone levels a place to compete. This is actually way more inclusive then trying to fit people into two neat little boxes. Everyone could use their preferred names and pronouns and be cheered for who they are. It seems trans women aren't thinking of all the other people that will benefit from this but women every where agree with this and newsflash, women matter too

And if sex isn't binary as they claim, they're rejection of this idea doesn't make sense or align. These people are more interested in being seen as women even though sex supposedly isn't binary, and partaking the benefits of competing against biological women, and the special attention. Why is it the majority, if not all, of Transwomen athletes come out in the top of their said sport? Or within the top 5? If we are to believe Transwomen don't have an advantage, and are on the same playing field as Woman, then statistically shouldn't a good portion of them not make it? I never hear about Transwomen Athletes not being on the top of their competition.

Bodies play sport not identities .....12years is pre puberty which allows for intersex to develop and participate as adults...so this will only affect adult men who have all the male attributes given them through puberty to which they can compete in men's sports or open categories ...transmen already compete in women's sports as they are female ...so transwomen should compete in men's sports as they are male...suppressing testosterone in adult males does not take the levels down to females not does it negate those male advantages puberty gives.....it does not stop any sex playing darts snooker or any other sport where physical advantages of biology disadvantage women...this trans person is not telling the whole story...
Its completely banning all trans people from sport and is segregation, simple as that. No 12 year old or kid before 12 is getting hormones, thus is unable to compete.
@jake mr honest i mean they act like every second competitor is trans at that level, when you may get maybe one to three internationally that compete and maybe one thats any decent.
But in 16 years of being allowed in the Olympics no trans man/woman has ever won a podium or broken a WR.

Hannah plays in a team sport where the differences aren’t exact numbers but a team score. Hannah clearly has the voice of a male and it’s things like that which show that hitting puberty does make a difference. Support trans poeple is a great movement but maybe not in high performance sport where they have an advantage.
If she was 5'7 or something it wouldn't look so bad on the field, even if her voice was even deeper. But when you transition with such a chad physique it is particularly bad optics.
Just make Trans-Olympics. That's so simple! Do they want to compete or make drama?

Hannah clearly doesn’t understand that the “open category” includes men. It’s not that there will be just trans women, so fears that there won’t be many of them are unsubstantiated. It’s just that athletes like Hanna will need to train harder to keep up.

I said this some time ago that these sports governing organizations will not bother with case by case basis. If they were to allow, it would be some standard testosterone measurement and they wouldn't take other potential advantages into account. If they banned, they would blanket ban. I think we will see this in other sports in the future.

At least we agree on one thing. It really shouldnt be a debate. The science is in and the science says that men retain a multitude of benefits even without testosterone. Litetally just takes a google search and theres hundreds of studies highlighting the many physiological differences between men and women. Many which arent even affected by testosterone ( eg mechanical advantage of the hip and significantly increased ability at perception of fast moving objects).
They won't compete because, they won't feel like Real men Till they beat real women

Its not a gray area. It is black and white. Trans athletes need their own category and if there are not enough people for them to compete against, they should get proactive in their community and get trans people more interested in sports. It would be a good way for them to get out their aggression and never ending woes me mentality and feel better about themselves.
