These little bits of information you give, such as about the cows housing in relation to backing up, are so useful. Its little things like this that people often just dont think about, yet can make a big difference to the health and longevity of the cow.
Thank you for putting these little bits in.

Must be nice to have someone to chum around with while at work. I used to feed and clean out over 30 horse stalls first thing in the morning by myself. The radio was always playing through the barn. Would have been nice to have another body to joke around with and ride with after the work was done though. ;-)

As you promised, a great video! It was nice we got to see a lot of hoof trimming. I really like how you discussed with Craig how hoof problems could occur. I understood everything!
Not only do you give an awesome demonstration with the grinder, you give the hoof trimming industry an awesome example why safety glasses are so important. Hoof trimmings, sawdust, dried poo, flying flecks of "god knows what" flying up into your face and hair. And how about that 🐄 cow's contribution. Eww!

Spookylady I noticed that too! I grew up on a farm and the barn’s foundation was stone. It was great to have our sows farrow in the “basement,” of the barn. We kept them warm and cozy there. The barn was kind of a split level with a big earthen ramp that went up into the hay mow. The, “basement,” part had sliding doors that opened up on a cement lot and the hogs could walk inside. Hard to explain. I almost cried when I saw it a few years ago and only the foundation remained. Several years of neglect left it in ruins.

I’ve grew up & worked on cow/calf operations, and then almost 20 years later began working at a dairy farm and EVERYTHING was sooo eye-opening different, I was literally stunned by the differences and the learning curve had a multitude of surprises & reasoning differences, it was like comparing apples to orange = fruits, but comparing daily dairy farming to ranching on a cow/calf beef operation was not even close when comparing their different needs & diets, hoof care demands, the higher rate of milk fever in Dairy cows, the environment that dairy cattle must endure with concrete floors, little to no pastures for the cows to feed on or even to just sun themselves on a summer day as they chew their cud, while at a cow/calf operation you would have to fight cows to even try to get them into the barns verses some dairy cows are pretty content to stay in the barns 24-7.
I do understand that dairy cows are given a precise high-end diet to increase their milk production to the max amount, and of course concrete floors are a necessity to clean-up the barns while also assisting the cows overall health by being in a cleaner environment. Good to also hear that dairy farmers should now know (proof) that increasing the concrete stall sizes, will also save them money in the long run while also increasing the milk production (through better health), especially with the additional rubber mats and sawdust on the new larger stalls will also help stop the cows from developing mastitis and help them from injuring their teats when they attempt to stand up, will be easier on these new, cushioned, cleaner & less slippery stalls! With the widened ally-ways to help assist the cows by not stress-loading their hooves into unnatural movement should also help with reducing the inflammation & costly hoof care treatments by implementing the construction of changing the barn to be more ERGONOMIC in the stall & alleyway to assist with preventive hoof maintenance & care by making the ergonomic & relative small changes in the barn.
I would absolutely love to be able to see a older barn with at least a one year clear history with monthly milk production average per cow (or all cows milk production monthly history) costs for hoof care, antibiotic usage, #of times cows are pulled due to feet infection/antibiotics used, how long & how much $💰$ to treat a foot problem, # of cows sold due to being unsound/chronic feet. Then do a transition where these ergonomic changes are brought into the barn to be able to see the differences on milk production, cost of hoof care maintenance versus hoof treatment, and compared to all of the other Category’s above that I mentioned. It would certainly be interesting to see the numbers in black an white 💰

Okay, I say this with love and concern. There is a saying...the only time you ride a bike without a helmut is when you forget to put your head on.
So why aren't you wearing your safety glasses? Did you forget to put your eyes on?
If the safety glasses are uncomfortable, get measured at an optical shop and order ones that fit.
There are also lightweight adjustable face shields you can use.
You have already been injured and out of work before. But what happens if you lose an eye?
Protect your family by protecting your eyes! End rant.

Great music, beautiful scenes at the end, but most of all, it’s fabulous watching you train and teach. Asking what he finds most difficult and why; then you really listen without judgment! Then showing him how the girls environment can have the potential for injuries. Your a wonderful mentor and he a sponge! Again, good work 👍

Hello Hoof GP, from a small farm in central Utah, USA...I found you several months ago and thoroughly enjoy your show and your personality...I watch your show on my TV and do not get to comment very often but will try and like more of your programs.. Thank you for your love for these wonderful beasts, I have had many of them and am down to 3 at the moment..I am having problems with a huge 8 yr old Hereford's front feet.. I have a squeeze chute but she won't fit and I need to trim her front hooves.. Lots of snow here and very cold and I am getting old!! LOL I hope she makes it til spring..

I'm watching this on April 20, 2022 so Graeme is using SUCH a less exciting crush here!
He and Craig are having to squat down and work so much harder than with the newest crush!
    It's amazing.
The farmers are taking better care of their cattle now because of the information Graeme is telling them how their old set-ups are hurting their cows feet - which in the end loses the farm money.
Graeme is also even more talkative now!
    Better music now too.
He's grown and so has his channel!

I've watched you do so many routine trims, I feel like Id know what to do if I had to do it myself. The tricky part is when you find a real problem.

    • @conor7187
      @conor7187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'll type it out to see if I'm right.
You use the blade to trim while also looking for cracks, white line problems or ulcers.
You trim the toes if they're going out of shape, making sure the hoof walls are aligned properly.
      Trim Jew(?) Claws if necessary.
Make a concave trim on the inside of the hoof to relieve pressure for the petal (spells probably off) bone.
And that's basically a routine, healthy trim?

@@conor7187 also about 75mm from the crown (or the hair) any closer and you'll make her lame. Also get rid of any cracks so they don't continue to split up the claw and cause an abscess.
Remove any foreign objects and make sure the integrity of the claw remains intact.
      And investigate any soft spots.
      That's the best I've got.
