What Is The Difference Between Vehicle Speed Sensor And Transmission Speed Sensor?
When you examine fuel-injected engines on modern cars, you would notice that there are lots of sensors that work together to inform the engine or transmission computer what is happening. The vehicle computer needs to understand if the wheels are turning well if the engine is spinning, and ensure all component remains within specifications.
However, a speed sensor is regarded as various types of sensors found in the engine. Note that some vehicles have wheel speed sensors, while others have engine and transmission speed sensors.
But you need to understand the difference between the vehicle speed sensor and transmission speed sensor. So to understand their differences, I will have to explain what they are individual.
What Is A Vehicle Speed Sensor?
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) happens to be a small component that is mounted on your vehicle’s transmission which allows the vehicle’s onboard computer to understand how fast the car is moving.
So How Does The Speed Sensor Work?
It works by measuring the rotational speed of all gears in the transmission system. The vehicle speed sensor helps to convert the measurement of the rotational speed of all gears into an analog signal and sends it to the electronic control units (ECUs) inside your vehicle.
When this happens, the vehicle’s ECUs will then use the signal to adjust the vehicle's speedometer readings, the transmission system, and the ABS module.
The vehicle’s cruise control system might also rely on the information generated by the speed sensor. When there’s no information generated, your vehicle won’t be able to maintain a constant vehicle speed.
So What Is A Transmission Speed Sensor?
A vehicle transmission speed sensor communicates directly to the ECU or TCU which helps an automatic transmission understands what gear it should be in. However, there are two main types of transmission speed sensors: the first is the input shaft speed sensor and the other is the output shaft speed sensor.

Simply put, a transmission speed sensor and a vehicle speed sensor is the same

I still don't know which speed sensor, the Automatic Transmission speed sensor or the ABS speed sensor, goes with either the input or the output shaft. That was the whole point of the title of the segment, wasn't it?

Please help! My 03 Accord started jerking about a week ago. I've replaced several sensors, transmission fluid, spark plugs. It is still acting up. I was told its the transmission switch control solenoid. Is this true?

Suddenly my rpm didn't work and also gears not shift correctly. Is it transmission sensor issue?

The sensor shown here and said to be on the transmission looks exactly like the one on my rear axle gear case, nothing on my trans look like it. I’m confused. 99 Ranger 2wd

Does the speed sensor always make the cruise control not work, im getting a hard shift 1st to 2nd in a automatic, transmission fluid is good, no codes or anything for my transmission or any sensors. Just the hard shift and sometimes delayed shift

When the sensor goes bad, can it cause the overdrive light to come on and make the transmission feel like it's down shifting while driving at 70mph ? And it happened 2x and it hasn't happened again. Also if any of the sensors are bad will a fixit finder diagnose it ?I'm obviously lost and would appreciate some advice. I can fix it myself, I'm just not the best at diagnosis and cant trust a lot of these shops, they see a woman and try get over on us, now you know why I do all the work on my car.
Hope to get an answer soon.
    Thanks

The overdrive light will start blinking if the VSS goes bad. Cruise control stops working, and transmission shifts arent smooth.

Understand you on the woman issue! And the downshifting lol currently trying to diagnose same issue. Taking the affordable routes first. Speed sensor.. pressure sensor and maybe coolant sensor. Next a solenoid change. Already changed cracked pan and transmission filters. Did you figure yours out?
And the shop messing with woman's knowledge or lack of Ive had to fight with consumer protection twice in my lifetime! And won!
Not cool.. but they take advantage of guys too that don't know enough...
