  • In this video I will be working on a Dodge Ram 1500 that has an Automatic transmission that won't shift past 1st gear, it has a check engine light and the code is P1756 (Governor Pressure Not Equal to Target at 15-20 PSI). I will show you how you can replace this solenoid and also how you can service your automatic transmission as well.

How can so many people dislike this video? It's an informational video about a specific vehicle. It's to expand your knowledge. If it doesn't pertain to you, why watch it at all? I don't even own a dodge. I'm here to learn and expand my knowledge about the general mechanics of an automatic transmission. Don't dislike a video like this. It makes no sense

i just finished doing this procedure on my dodge durango. i was hesitant to do it because my my scanner didn't give me any codes telling me anything was wrong, but all the symptoms you described were there, thank you for you detailed video. I'm happy that I did the job myself because had a mechanic quote me a price for $500 parts and labor. and so far I'm $104 in parts. I say so far because i broke one of the bolts, but that least of my worries now that I know that my trans is going to be okay.

A neat trick I recently learned from another channel is to use a few cable ties through some of the bolt holes to hold the gasket in place on the pan. Once you have all the other bolts in place cut the cable ties pull them out and put in the final bolts. I guess RTV holds it in place too but it's not always necessary to use RTV.

Thanks for this video. I bought a '97 Dodge Ram 1500 8 cylinder three years ago. (love it, a real workhorse). Just recently, at 100,000 miles the transmission began to slip, but mostly won't go into overdrive. Sometimes it does - sometimes it doesn't. The gas mileage is still the same, though.
So, I'm going to get brave and replace the pressure solenoid myself. Listing the tools you used is a big help - I like tools.
Thanks again - great job on this video.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 with 42RE trans that is failing to shift(or slowly shifts) from 1st after coming to a stop. When trans is cold it shifts normally, but when warmed up it has the shift problem. I have heard from others these two parts(solenoid AND pressure sensor) are the first you should replace and also the trans speed sensor('99 uses only one). Thanks! Mike in LA, Calif, USA

That code just refers that you have a transmission problem, it doesn't specify what it is. Look at the description for that code in the scanner, if it doesn't tell you a specific problem like "pressure too low" or something like that, take it to an auto parts place and have the check engine light checked, they'll give you a full diagnose of the problems

Cool Video. I have the 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with 5.9 Eng and Eng light came on after jumping over a few road bumps, as a result, I got Eng light with 2 code P 1756 and P 0740. So, In search, i saw your video and from start follow what you recommend....... Start the truck with Eng light still on, checked the trans Oil 3 times, it was at the level where it should be, Than i went and shift the gear from P to N then to D after 5 seconds to 1 after 5 seconds to 2,...move the truck little bit each time on that gear and guess what?
    My Eng light went away!
    So, Happy.
From now on i would go slow on the road bumps.
This true, I am not kidding. Eng light went away.
Even if in the future i have to go and change it, I would owe it to you for your great Video.

These only have a pcm not a trans module. Dont be a parts changer. Do these all the time. Continuity check works the best on the solenoid. Make sure you have the 5v goin to computer and make sure the computer is sending ground to the assembly. If that check is ok pop open the pan.. Disconnect the pressure solenoid then do a resistance check if there is resistance then replace the solenoid. If no resistance and you have continuity then replace filter and clean the screen. Also if your wiring and electrical side is good then a flush would be best before replacing filter and cleaning the solenoid screen. Also check for closed looped system when checking fluid lvl

2003 automatic 5.7 ram. It drives fine when in Drive, but won't move when put in 1st or 2nd gear. Can that solenoid cause this problem as well?

Hello! Super video! I’m watching this because I just replaced my water pump in my 2002 dodge ram van 3500. It went smoothly and the van started and ran smoother than it ever has. However my transmission is not shifting into 3rd or 4th. Could I have knocked something loose taking the fan or belt off? Any help would be appreciated.

Try grounding your firewall to the negative of your battery. Your problem may be electrical as in your transmission isnt receiving the signal to shift correctly because may be distorted by something.

When you are checking fluid for a dodge you HAVE to have it in neutral so the fluid is flowing or else it will appear it is over full. Ik this because I work at a transmission shop

Great tip!!! I have always used this technique when checking trani fluid in any vehicle I own. I have a question for you, Gauge Horton, Since you work in a transmission shop. I have a 98 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.2 litre V-8 motor, with 4WD. Yesterday morning, while driving to work, I was approaching a left turn. Coming off a 13 mile stretch at 55-60 mph, obviously, I had to slow down to turn. As soon as I put my foot back on the gas pedal, it was as if my truck shifted itself into neutral!!!. I had to coast to the side of the road, put it in park, wait a few seconds, then put it back in drive. It didn't shift immediately like normal, took about 3-4 seconds, and only stayed in gear about 10 seconds. I lost trani function 4 times like this in a half-mile stretch. I immediately checked fluid level, color, smell. All were spot on. My boss and I attempted to "walk" it through the tree, 1 gear at a time, SLOWLY, to no avail. All I can find for info, help, and troubleshooting is to replace Governor Pressure Solenoid and Sensor Switch, or the whole dang transmission. If you or anyone can help me, I will be eternally grateful. I work in an Auto Parts store so you'd think I could figure this out. I'd rather rebuild carbeurators all day than deal with a transmission issue. Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

gauge horton any tips for an 08 mountaineer (ford based) locks us from shifting past reverse unless the engine, oil etc is plenty warm then even if we reverse onto an uneven patch of groud the problems even worse. every fluid's been replaced so far if that helps at all

    • @coolviper25
      @coolviper25 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Unless of course you have a dodge transmission like one on this video like one I have, that when the transmission messes up that neutral becomes 1st gear but not drive, because it won't go into second until you put it in drive. But what really throws me off is it doesn't have reverse anymore, but it also won't go forward while in reverse. Also it jumped forward in park right after you put it in park.

most trans dipsticks give instructions on checking the level right on the dipstick...pause the video@ 1:15 or so, you can read it says to check idling in neutral on this vehicle.

    I have a 1993Chevy van g20 5.7L
    Just replaced the transmission
    But now sometimes works perfectly
And some times won't do nothing. Like I can shift and won't catch a spedd from reverse to the Las speed.
    Than I turn it off
    Wait a few minutes
    Turn it on again
And trainy is back in business again.

Great info man! I have an issue with my automatic trans having a high rpm on accelerating. It revs around 3k to 4k before shifting. I can also feel there a delayed engagement after pressing the pedal. Should I do the same thing what you did, or is there something else to do? I've never changed the trans fluid but on checking the dip stick, its fairly pink. (driven 140k miles)

I wish I lived near you for advice or work that I can't do myself. Local shops around here will rob you blind if you don't know someone personally. I enjoy working on my car, but doing it outside on the asphalt on hot, humid 95 degree Atlanta days with no shade is not fun.

I had a 95 dodge with the Cummins and an autumatic. It would start doing crazy shifts and downshift on its on sometimes. There is a temp sensor in one of the metal fluid lines where it goes to the trans, can be changed with a 6"cresent wrench. Fixed it every time for about 6 to 12 months.
