Vet here - it can be worthwhile to keep her diaper area shaved down to a zero blade. This can make it easy to wipe the area and keep it clean. Many dogs can live long and happy lives with incontinence, it’s not a reason to put a dog down and my hats off to the owners for making this decision.

Can confirm. My eldest is deaf, and she screams a lot. For reasons that I would argue don't warrant screaming (breakfast is coming, breakfast isn't quite fast enough, there's a squirrel outside, the other dog is running around, I've put her leash and harness on, you name it) and her shrill shrieking does not sound like an Aussie. We've had to get used to the sounds and get good at picking out what scream means "you stepped on my paw" and what means "yay, food!"

I think I read somewhere that it has something to do with pack communication for sled dogs. Because they can't use body language hauling along at top speed. Obviously this they aren't all working dogs now, but as an active choice in their selection of breeding to have "vocal" dogs that talked to each other a lot. 😅

Poor guy would wake up in his own urine, and I'd do my best to clean him but as a postdoc at a university I couldn't afford a groomer. Shortly after we brought her home I knew something was wrong with her back/rear legs. We had her x-rayed while she was being spayed. My fear was she’d been injured at some point. It turned out she had a congenital defect in the last bone of her spine that compressed on the nerves to her legs and sphincter. She was diagnosed with rear-leg ataxia and despite the incontinence and wobbly gait, she lived and was loved for 11 years. I miss that little girl daily.

A good option for incontinent dogs is a foaming shampoo that is meant to be used on a dry coat.
You rub it in, let sit for a few minutes and towel off. I used it on my dog when he was incontinent for a month after surgery and it really helped keep him clean and free of urine scalding. You want to make sure the area gets fully dry afterwards before using a diaper as well. Air circulation is important for healthy skin
I believe the one I used was bohdi dry foaming shampoo, lightly scented and coconut oil based. Formulated for dogs.

We use a dry foaming shampoo for our older guy. He's 16.5 years old and doesn't have the best bladder control (bowel too for that matter), so he'll often just have an accident while lying in his bed. So in between actual baths, we'll use a foaming one to keep him relatively clean and not smelling bad.

I helped take care of my friends, Husky, while she was battling cancer and after she passed, and one thing I know they do NOT STOP SHEDDING through out the year. He was a good boy to be groomed, even though the brush was not the greatest...BIRDS LOVED it each day when he was groomed outside. It was comical to watch puff balls with streamers going up wards from the ground , and the little wrens, sparrows of different breeds, cardinal NOT Be SEEN, as they flew off to their nesting site. Thanks telling us about the diaper, and certain pressure spots. Hopefully owners will feel better to groom

My Husky was exactly like this, lived until 17 years old. Same fur color and pattern, except she had more of the wolf/raccoon mask under her eyes. Same blue right eye, brown left eye. In her later years she became deaf, developed dementia, some blindness, and at the end incontinence and hind leg weakness. In the morning we would find blocks of her poo on the floor (at least it was dry), but I work in healthcare so it doesn't phase me and it was during COVID so we had gloves and wipes anyways. She was sweet and really perfect for us, in her earlier years she was very active and she was actually a very quiet husky. I wished she would talk to us more, but she only did so when she was 1) hungry or 2) needed to go out to pee. So watching other Huskies talk is kind of a catharsis for me. Thank you for treating this girl with respect!

I had an elderly lab with GOLPP (Geriatric-Onset Laryngeal Paralysis Polyneuropathy) that caused similar nerve damage and incontinence to what this husky is experiencing.
They lose sensation in their feet, and it makes it hard to keep their balance sometimes when combined with their weakness in those areas. That’s probably why she could stand and walk sometimes but other times could not. Our dog had a lifting harness to help with when his legs just didn’t want to work that day.
He was the happiest boy who didn’t let it upset or slow him down at all. He figured out a shuffle crawl pretty quick, and lived his golden years surrounded with hundreds of toys in his own private room with round the clock attention and care since there were enough of us in the house.
He was the best. We’ll have lost him 3 years ago come December, and I miss him every day. To anyone reading this who is apprehensive about adopting a disabled dog, as long as you have the means to care for them, they make just as amazing of companions and able bodied dogs do.

Vanessa, never apologize for doing what's best for the animal in question. Those that complain about such things should be promptly ignored, as the rest of us (which I'm assuming is the majority of your watchers) completely understand & love that you're more concerned for the welfare of the animal. I'm so thankful every time I watch one of videos featuring a critter who might have a disability/ies & get to see just how compassionate you are in caring for your clients. Thank you Vanessa, for all that you do for these wonderful animals!

If she was fit enough the bad air snaky thing would be killed.... I have used a foam dry wash in the past... Foam on, rub in, towel dry, dog was cleaner, skin soothed, nice smell. Wow no tap dancing for paws n nails... Fantastic. You made such a big difference to her coat and cared for her so well. Thank you for sharing Shorty, so cute.

Poor baby... my little lass has night-time incontinence, which we cope with by popping her into a little suit, which has a special section where a doggy incontinence pad goes. If she pees in the night, the pad absorbs a very large volume of urine, so Trudie stays dry and comfortable and doesn't get urine all over herself or her bed. The suit and pad work brilliantly, and she could wear it during the day if necessary. It doesn't slip like a nappy or a belly band. Thankfully, it's not poop, but we would find a way to cope with that if we had to. You are so skilled and patient with all the dogs.... thank you for your kindness❤.
