Glad my comments helped you out. Normally, selecting ADAT sync as slave, you would not require the BNC lead for WORD clock. ADAT out from RME to ADAT in of ADA8200 will already have a clock signal. WORD clock sync is used when more than 1 slave devices need syncing, so that One master WORD clock out to multiple slave WORD clock in. Hope that helps.
Obviously I still don't have a 100% grasp on the subject :-) But still, thanks a ton for your suggestion, it's made me a very happy guy! Although I'm a happy guy that's at a shortage of patchbay connections...
You are most welcome. We are all learning every day. I just visited my fellow friend at his Sound Signal Studio and learnt how to do special vocal effects that wondered how they did it. :)
Oh man, vocals are my nemesis! I've tried every tip, trick, and suggestion out there, and I still end up with unremarkable vocals (or some sort of weird sounding chorusy monstrosity). If I end up going exclusively instrumental, you'll know why!
I'm having issues with my Focusrite 18i20 syncing/locking with my Beheringer ADA8200. I've set my Focusrite as the master, ran ADAT out from the Behringer, and into the Focusrite. I'm having issues getting the Behringer to lock with the Focusrite, and get signal from the Bheringer into StudioOne. any help would be appreciated!
For anyone wanting to mix with this set up, unity gain on the ADA is around 11 o'clock according to Sound On Sound mag. I found the same in my real world use. Great video. This is why the internet exist
Great instructional. Helped me out a great deal. Learned more in the 20 minutes on ur vid then the day I spent trying to figure out my setup. I use Traction 7, its enough for my needs. Thanks for ur time putting the ids together
I don’t know if someone else has already made this comment, but it is possible to flow the ins on the ADA8200 straight to the outs on the back. You just have to connect the same optical cable to both the in and the out on the ADA8200. This will send out and then back in (which is, admittedly, strange) and then out the outs on the back. Just did this today. Not sure this is of any use for recording, but I like to use my unit sometimes as a pass-through to a live mixer for practice with the band and sometimes as an interface for recording. Works great for this.
That is interesting I have an Apollo twin duo and purchased this to increase my input count to 10 are you saying I can take advantage of the 8 outputs as well? Because just connecting the Apollo via optical and the 8200 I only seem to have access to the extra input via UAs digital mixer called Console 2
You got a new subscriber here. I watch a lot of professional studio videos, but i learn just as much watching non-professionals, because we struggle with the same things. But maybe you are professional. I didn't intend to make assumptions.
I use my ADA8200 to my Babyface Pro with only one TOSLINK cable to get the signal going. Why is the need for second one?To use the outputs from the ADA8200 for external processing and going back Into its inputs?
Hi there, thanks for your informative video. I used it to successfully connect the 8200 to my behringer umc 1820 connected by optical light pipes( I got the 8200 so I can leave the drums mics set up). But... I cant get any monitor output from the 8200 in Reaper. I would be very grateful for any suggestions/solutions. Many thanks, Pete from Auchtermuchty, Scotland.
Hey, I have the same equipmet setup as you with the 1820, and I just got my 8200 in, but can't seem to get any output from the 8200 detected in my DAW. I would love to hear any insight you might have, or if you could share how you got yours to work it would be insanely helpful!
Could you explain how to route the outputs for the ADA8200 in total mix to work with logic? I have the clock working as it should but I’m yet to get signal connected to the ADA8200
Handy note: if you do just want to use this as a passthrough with phantom power you can just plug the ADAT Output straight into the Input. You're basically just looping back the output.
pretty sure you don't need word clock from the master interface when you are using TOSlink Optical sync. That would be used for expanding interfaces when TOSlink is exhausted on your master interface but still need to sync other gear.
So yes you can not use this as a stand alone unit, you have to use the adat out, but its cool that they allow you to use a light pipe back in with 8 channels and use the 8 analog outputs on the back for routing.
On this unit, forgive me if this is a dumb question, but are the inputs and outputs mono signals? I’m trying see if I can run a hybrid setup with my line 6 helix 6 rack. I want to do some sort of reamping, but I don’t know enough about cables to know wether or not I can use both ts or trs cables to make this work or if I need to stick with one or the other. I’m looking at buying the two notes torpedo reload to snag my amps output (signal: guitar, line 6 helix rack, DIoutput from helix to Bugera TRIREC, TRIREC to two notes torpedo, torpedos line out to go into line 6 helix send/return) so I can basically make my physical rig into a “block” that is the send/return I send the torpedo into which I can then throw an IR on in the helix rack, the helix being controlled via USB to send my DAWs recorded DI signals to the helix to complete the loop to make a hybrid reamp setup. My question may not be directly related to the Behring we product specifically but with ts and trs cables with xlr-m and xlr-f ends. How can I know what cable to use and when? I understand that one is balanced and the other is unbalanced, but does that mean one is stereo and the other is mono? Or are they all mono? Apologies in advance for my long winded comment. 🤘🏼
Typically, only the headphone outputs are a stereo signal sent over a single cable. Everything else is individual mono inputs/outputs (at least anything I can think of off the top of my head at the moment). So any stereo signal would require a use of 2 channels: one for the left signal, one for the right signal.
Great info!!! I have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, but no longer have a computer with Firewire. I'm hoping to find a USB interface that I can connect via ADAT / Lightpipe and still utilize the Saffire rather than it sits on the shelf and collect dust.
The ADA8200 is basically an add-on for an existing audio interface. So it won't be able to serve as a way to use an ADAT interface that has no connectivity to your computer. You'll need an interface that connects to your computer via USB and has ADAT inputs/outputs to use the ADA8200.
@@YHRS Thnanks! I called Focusrite and they confirmed that it can be done. I just need to get my Saffire Pro 40 hooked up to firewire long enough to change the routing internally from it's outputs to ADAT and then I can use one of their USB interfaces that has Optical on it and all channels will show up :) Much appreciated!
That was interesting! I'd like to learn more about word clock. I use a Focusrite October MkII Dynamic and a UA Apollo Twin and connect them optically. Am wondering if I need to be concerned about the timing between the two. Is there an easy-to-read pub? Thanks!
As far as I understand it, if there are timing issues over ADAT, it would result in pops/clicks/dropouts in your audio. If you're not experiencing any of these issues then I think that you're in good shape and the clock sync is working.
can the ADA8200 be used as a headphone mixer? Sending ADAT Out from the interface to the ADAT In of the ADA8200 and each 8 line outs goes to a pair of headphones?
Hi thanks. But where did you connect the kick drum? Because, the ultragain is getting its input from the compressor's output and the ultragain output goes to the compressor's input. And your interface gets the ultragain via adat. But where did you connect your kick drum? Did I miss something?
About the IN / OUT thing: *Yes, you can use it as a standalone preamp* . The standard routing for this thing is: Channel IN - ADAT Out ADAT In - Channel OUT So in theory, you can just patch de Adat Out with the Adat In with an Adat cable and the signal should flow from the analog ins to the analog outs. I haven't tried it because I don't have one, but in theory it should work.
Can I chain the two preamps together using the ADAT I/O’s. For example, connect the ADAT out from one preamp to the ADAT in of another and take the Adat out of that preamp into the ADAT in of my interface?
@@carrott0pgaming844 yes, but this way you will only be sending the clock from the Behringer, as the Adat Out of your second preamp will only carry 8 audio channels, which will be the ones integrated on it.
I recently connected my Ultragain ADA8200 to my Audient iD14 interface. Because I had no ADAT cables, I resorted to connecting the channel One analogue output to the analogue input of my interface ( the Audient ). I had my mic connected to the Channel One input of the Behringer . The signal from my mic went right through theADA8200 and into the Audient, no problem. Do you mean to say analogue outputs do not work if the ADAT output is already in use?
Is it possible to use the XLR out going to the mixer and the ADAT going to my interface? Also, can i still use the ADA8200 without my interface and have the signal go to my mixer using the XLR out. What i wanted to achieve is to not have to remove the cables once everything is set up.
If undoing and redoing connections is a problem, you might take a look at a patchbay. That can make it much easier to "set and forget" the cables behind your setup. And if you need to change the routing, it's quick and easy with patch cables on the front of the patchbay.
I have 2 Apogee Ensemble FireWire units after finding the second unit for $150 on a EBay. Was wondering if I run the second unit through adat are those line inputs and outputs or will the built in mic preamps work through the adat? Awesome video thank you
I have Apogee Element 24 and Behringer ADA8200. I've tried to use XLR Outputs from the ADA8200 but I couldn't get any signal. There is only one difference with your setup that I have only one Toslink / Optical cable plugged like [Out] ADA8200 -> [IN] Apogee. I thought that the [IN] ADA8200 slot to connect another ADA8200 to get 8/8 more channels. In the manual of Behringer says you don't need to have 2 optical cables to use all the in and outputs. I confused and ordered another Toslink / Optic cable again :) Let's see.
Nice video man, I have a question, me and my Friends have an 8 person podcast, with 4 dynamic mics (Podmic) and 4 condenser mics, all mic is connected to a Tascam US-1641 interface, we récord in reaper, my question is can we use this Behringer ADA8200 like a Cloudlifter? Like a mic preamp? The 8 microphones via ADA8200 then through the Tascam US-1641 interface? , Thanks in Advance.
How many of these can I adat together with my 18i20 3rd gen? Here are my needs; 12 channels for drums. 1 channel for piano. 1 channel for organ. 1 channel for fiddle. 1 channel for pedal steel. 1 channel for bass guitar. 2 channels for electric guitar. 1 channel for acoustic guitar. 1 channel for harmonica. 4 channels for vocals. 1 channel for shakers. 1 channel for tambourine. Thats a total of 27 channels. Even though I wont be using them all at once, I still want them left in their same location. I want a set-it-and-forget-it setup. I wish there were interfaces that would accept 32 mic/combo jack inputs.
The 18i20 only has 8 channels via ADAT, so you can only get 8 inputs and 8 outputs through that connector. To get 24 or 32 channels over ADAT, you'd need something like the RME Digiface USB, then you can connect up to 4 8-channel ADAT preamps for a total of 32 inputs and 32 outputs. Beyond that, it gets pretty expensive to get these big channel counts. You could do something over MADI, AVB, or Dante instead of ADAT. But the devices that support those protocols are pretty pricey. If you're on Mac, you can combine audio interfaces as an aggregate device and get two 18i20 and two ADA8200 for a total of 32 inputs and outputs via ADAT.
@YHRS Ive been searching all morning for answers. Thank you! I will check those out. ......On a side note, I just heard a rumor that you can use a DL32 stagebox as an interface. I dont know if it needs a host interface, or if it will run as a stand-alone interface without a host (like my 18i20 or equivalent), but this would be a killer option if its true.
I was looking for a cheap way to get my inline Mackie 24-8 to work in the studio for recording and mixing. Seems like three ADA8200 + RME Digiface ADAT-USB is the way to go !
Did you try this setup ? I want to use 4-ADA8200 if that is possible with the RME digiface USB. but concerned about how to make sure they all sync. Thanks
What studio9 said is correct. In addition to get a perfect wordclock connection, in this example, the end @ ADA8200 should be terminated with a bnc-T and a resistor. But i think he is using the adat-connection to sync. I had good results with cabeling bnc wordclock "inline" up to 3 Units (Termination @ the end). More Units should be synced by a Masterclock-Unit.
UPS came today and delivered mine and I just found out the same thing that it wont pass through which makes it completely useless for me. In fact I am having a hard time to realize whats the use for it. I did not watch your earlier upload I just stumbled over your channel more or less by accident so Im not blaming you or anything just wanna say thanks for clarifying it lol. I had big plans for this unit in the setup I am working on at the moment for multiple individual headphone mixes and routing channels to external gear and so forth. Was thinking maybe you could loop the toslink from in to out but that probably wont work and since inputs could be either mic or line that could be a problem too I guess. I got all the soundcards I need and a bunch of computers, mixers and stuff so I just needed the preamps. Oh well I will send it back
You definitely can loop the ADAT out to the ADAT in with a TOSLink cable, and another TOSLink cable to link the ADAT in to the ADAT out. It'll pass the audio from the front panel inputs to the back panel outputs. There's a slight cost in latency in doing so, but it's not enough to cause problems. Just a little phase issues if you're using that alongside integrated preamps in an interface.
Thanks for the reply, I just tried it and it works. Hopefully you can adjust the latency in your daw if its to bad. Thinking about it the same amount of latency should occur even used the way it´s supoused to be used and hooked up. I mean first you have a short delay in ad converters going out of it through the adat out and the you get a short delay in your soundcard and then inside the computer and then from the comp out to the soundcard and in to the adat in on the ada8200 to the ad converter and out on the backside outputs. Let me see now if I got the chain right, yes I think I did. But that will show in time I guess, still it seems to be a supercool piece of hardware. In reality it turned out to be a very useful and flexible thing and specially for the price you pay for it. So I was dead wrong thinking it was useless lol.
Hello ! Intersting, Thanks for the video. Why do you connect word clock if you are using adat ? You computer says : input statut Word No lock. Would that work if you connect only word clock witout adat ?
Great tutorial ! Would this also work with a focuriste 18i8 2nd gen as it’s supposed to be set as the slave and the ada8200 the master ? Thanks & cheers!
Sure, any interface that has ADAT in/out would work the same way. You can set either the interface or the ADA as the master or the slave for the word clock. Just choose one to be the master, and the other becomes the slave, and set the switches accordingly.
So, am I understanding this right? You can’t use the ADA8200 as an analog preamp only? For example, if I plug a synth in line-in 1 there will be no signal at Output-1? Unless the ADAT ports are plugged?
You can actually plug a TosLink cable from the ADAT input to the ADAT output, and it'll pass a signal from the preamp through to the analog output on the back. I learned that after I made this video.
Great channel! just suscribed. I have a focusrite 18i20 3erd generation and i want to buy this behringer ADA8200 to have more xlr channels. Should i sync them through the optical cable and the world clock cable? (what was the name of that cable?) And i'm planning to put my focusrite as master and the behringer as slave just to have more channels. I record drums, so that´s why. Hope you understand my question. I´m from Argentina, Big hugs
Hello. I have a Babyface. I want to know if i can send my stereo mix to a stereo preamp with this ADA8200. And, how is the quality? Compared to your RME outputs. And .. The babyface only has ADAT In/out.
I use my ADA8200 every day, and I really like it. The preamps and converters can't quite compete with RME's Hammerfall converters and pristine preamps, but they're not bad by any means. I run my gaming computer's audio through a pair of line inputs on the ADA8200, so I listen to a lot of TH-cam, Media Player, and games through them every day and I think they're great. The Midas preamps are terrific for the money. They have a little less headroom than the RME preamps, so they'll start distorting as you push them hard. But I haven't had any need to push them hard, so no problem there.
Cool stuff! Unfortunately, I'm struggling to get a return signal at all with Studio One. Using a Babyface Pro, the ADA8200, and a ART VLA II compressor. VLA II works fine as an insert with other preamps so I don't think that's the problem... Current routing: ADA 8200 line OUT to compressor IN, compressor line OUT to ADA8200 IN, correct? ADA8200 is "NOT" hooked up with your UCX via patchbay cables, right?? Connection should be only thru Toslink cables I believe(?) Downloaded Reaper to evaluate and recreate your steps but I still have the same issue... just can't figure it out... Do you have any special routing going on in TotalMix? Thanks for your time!
In TotalMix, when you click on one of the hardware outputs, make sure that the associated software playback output fader is up. For instance, when I click on the AN 3 hardware output (bottom row), I make sure that the AN 3 software playback (middle row) fader is all the way up at 0dB. That definitely has thrown me for a loop more than once!
Can I ask you? I think you don’t need the clock sync via bnc cable since by linking the adat cable it passes the clock sync as well Because what happens if for example I would like to add two of those behringer in order to have 16 preamps How would you link it since the is no clock out on the ada8200? I am asking because I have the rme 800 and I am thinking get two of those behringers And I am very curious to see if that is possible ?
Just got a ADA8200 in Running it with the Uphoria, this video helps, thanks, got a question though, I got some TOSlink cables and they are super hard to get connected properly it seems, also there is a rubber covering on the ends of the eyes, is that suppose to be removed? thanks
Hi. Thank you for the video. I'm thinking to buy ADA8200 to expand my Fireface UCX with more line input ports to connect several synths. I have a question about RME TotalMix Fx. How the RME software handles the ADA8200 interface?
I think that's a great choice! I'm still enjoying my ADA8200 attached to my FireFace UCX after all these years. TotalMix just sees the inputs and output of the ADA8200 as extra inputs/outputs on the UCX. I just see them as 8 additional hardware inputs on the top row, 8 additional software playback channels on the middle row, and 8 additional hardware output on the bottom row.
The ADA8200 is an add-on for an existing audio interface. You'll need an audio interface with ADAT inputs and/or outputs in order to connect the ADA8200 to your computer.
Just got ADA8000 with my RME but cannot get any signal on Fireface from ADA8000.... I only connected a toslink ADAT cable from ADA's out to RME's in. Am I missing something? PLease help!
Very good video!!! I have one question about connectivity. I' m a previous owner of a DDX 3216 digital mixer, but after having some problems with its screen, I' m thinking of replacing with an ADA8200! I have a RME Digiface that has a phones output that I'm using for Control Room headphones, a POWERPLAY PRO XL (4-Channel Headphone Distribution Amp) for recording room headphones. On DDX3216 I had plenty of alternative connections... Where do I have to connect the POWERPLAY and my studio monitors on ADA8200?? Thank you!
Hey thanks! You'd plug your monitors into a pair of line outputs on the back of the ADA8200, and I'm assuming that the Digiface comes with TotalMix software. In TotalMix you'd designate a pair of outputs as "Main" outs. As for the PowerPlay, I'm not 100% sure since I've never played around with a headphone distribution amp. I'm sure that between TotalMix, the ADA8200 and the Digiface, you could find a way to get a couple of different cue mixes output from various pairs of outs on the Behri and feed those into the PowerPlay so everybody gets a "more me" mix. Well, I guess you'd get 3 individual mixes and a main out (that's 4 pairs of outputs altogether).
The only time I notice any latency is when I plug its digital input directly into its digital output and use the unit as an analog "pass through". The extra AD and DA conversion adds a slight amount of latency. But in normal everyday use as an expansion for my interface, I don't notice any latency on top of what the interface already incurs (about 3ms in and 3ms out).
hey! I have an idea. I have a 24 channel mixer and a few outboard racks. My idea, is to link a m-audio profire 2626 to a pair of ada8000s and use the 24 outputs to send each individual track to its corresponding track on my analog mixer. My idea overall is to be able to mix my tracks (at the very least, faders, panning, and light EQ) on the mixer and mix it down to a stereo master. My question, is: Is this at least possible? and if so am I doing it the best for the budget.
I think that should work. The only concern that I'd have is about the ProFire. It's an older unit, and I'd bet that M-Audio isn't still updating drivers for it. So there's a chance that Windows and Macs will eventually become incompatible with it (if that hasn't already happened).
Your Home Recording Studio thanks for the reply! Do you know of any other budget interfaces that could do that job? I know motu does but I've heard those can break easily.
MOTU has some great stuff, although my only experience with them was terrible (Ultralite Mk3 Hybrid on Windows 7 64-bit). But I know that lots of people happily use MOTU interfaces on both Mac and Windows and get great results.
Thanks! Yes, the ADA8200 is still alive and well! It's been powered up pretty much 24x7 since I got it. I think that the only times I've ever turned it off were when I moved to a new house a couple of times :)
Does this ADA8200 work as a standalone preamp without adat, so I can use it together with the Tascam us-16x08 to amplify ipunts that don't have a preamp?
Hi. How does one use the mic pre-amp if your audio interface does not have a digital input? Is it possible to use the XLR output from the ADA8200 straight to your audio interface XLR inputs? You say on the previous video that was wrong.
It doesn't pass signal from the inputs to the outputs by default, but you can patch the ADAT output to the ADAT input with a TOSLink cable and then it'll pass signal from the preamps straight out to the line outputs on the back.
@@wesleyhendricks153 It's just a matter of plugging one end of the TOSLink cable into the ADAT output, and the other end into the ADAT input. It's that simple!
When using Hardware inserts remember to hit the ping detect on your i/o plugin in your DAW so the latency compensation can be calibrated by the DAW and tracks don't fall out of the grid. In Reaper it's the plugin being used here REAinsert just remember to hit the ping on your i/o plugin when using hardware inserts to everything stays in it's original place and time due to the roundtrip latency. If your buffer is set to 512 then there will be a difference of of 512 samples on playback so if you ping the DAW can adjust for this and keep everything in it's place just as it would when you use plugins. Have a great day.
I'm about 50/50 on remembering to do that! It's defeating to spend time getting the phase all correct in the mic placement, then throw it all off by forgetting to do the ping detect.
We all forget brother! I do it myself sometime but after a few plays I notice something is off then I realize oh yea ping lol Keep doing what you are doing great job!!
@@feet57 Well since you didn't say what DAW you use there is no way we could help. You have to give us more information. Like the DAW you use and your interface and so on. But if you tell us we can help you figure it out
It would work for adding 8 more inputs to the Twin, but the Twin doesn't have ADAT output so it wouldn't be able to add 8 more line outputs. But if all you need is 8 more preamplified input channels, then it should work fine.
Thanks alot appreciate your reply. Yes, I am hoping to add just one more mic to my setup for ultimately using 3 mics to record my acoustic guitar instead of two. :) So that should be perfect for my needs. Thanks! @@YHRS
Gday Thanks for doing the follow up video. Shame it cant accept 8 front inputs and output 2 XLR at back to an 2 channel XLR audio interface , quite limiting being connected to an audio interface only via adat
It can connect 8 XLR outputs from the back to anything that'll accept a line-level signal. So you could plug those into 8 line inputs on an audio interface. Just connect the ADAT input to the ADAT output, and it becomes a pass-thru from the preamps on the front to the line outputs on the back.
Hello! I'm not sure I 100% understand the question. The gain knobs on the front of the unit control the input gain of each of the 8 analog inputs on the front of the unit.
A little confused by how the outputs work on the unit, is it just direct monitoring or would they work like outputs on my audio interface where I can send my whole mix and effects from my DAW? I'm looking to add my outputs to my live setup, don't really need more inputs.
They would work just like outputs on your audio interface. They'll show up as potential outputs in your DAW just like the ones built into your interface. With my interface and Reaper, both the inputs and outputs show up as ADAT 1 through ADAT 8.
You're welcome! Just make sure that your interface has an ADAT output. I've noticed that some interfaces have ADAT input, but not ADAT output. So it'd be worth double-checking just to make sure.
Hey Man, thats the exact setup I have in my studio right now----my question is---i only need the ada for a purpouse....I'd love to hook up its outputs to the inputs on my soundcraft k2 32 channels mixer...bus the inputs to a stereo group and print my finax mix (done on the console) straight back into protools as a stereo file. that's easily achieve by adat-ing my rme fireface to the ada and boom...deal is done...problem is..I'm now looking for a way to cascade 3 ada's to have 24+rme channels laying down on my console and mix from there as I do with 8 channels right now...does a way exists to have the rme as as the master and 3 adas down below it ? I thought about going out from the rme adat out into the ada's adat in then from the ada's adat out goint into another ada's adat in and so on....it is even possible? I'd love to hear from you and from anyone about it...thanks a lot. Alex
The UCX only has 18 inputs and 18 outputs (8 ADAT, 8 analog, and 2 S/PDIF). So that's all that you're going to get in and out of it with all of the ins and outs in use. Maybe take a look at the FireFace UFX, which is the bigger brother of the UCX. It has 30 inputs and outputs (16 ADAT, 12 analog, and AES/EBU...honestly no idea what that last one does). So you could hook 2 ADA8200's into it, plus have another 12 analog inputs straight into the unit itself. And its currently on sale at Sweetwater for cheaper than the UCX!
I used only the oplticat out from ADA8200 into my optical input from Apollo twin x and I did not need the clock cable ,just works fine without. I still don't know why u are use it.
Nice video. I am more of an old school engineer so I have a question. I am wondering if what you're conveying in this video is that this Behringer unit is useful if you want to send an audio signal from your DAW into a piece of outboard gear and then returning the audio signal back into the DAW. Similar to what you could do in the analog world using the inserts on a console for say a compressor, a gate or other gear. I have a lot of vintage outboard gear (as well as an analog console) and when I get DAW (soon I hope) I would like to have the ability to still use my outboard gear. Looking for the best way to do that. I would like the ability also to use the mic pre's and EQ (from the console) if recording a rhythm section all at one time, for instance. Thanks and well done video. Gave you a sub. Phil
Yes, it works great for this purpose. I've used mine quite a bit for looping in external gear for mixes. It has line inputs on the front, and line outputs on the back. That may not be the most convenient layout, but it works just fine!
@@YHRS OK. Thanks for clarifying. In your opinion is there any unit worth getting (even if more expensive) that has all the in's and outs on the back panel? Thanks again. Nice job. Phil
@@uptownphotography I've looked high and low for a simple AD/DA that has only line inputs and outputs on it, and there aren't a whole lot of them selling new nowadays. Most of what I can find have preamps and not just line inputs, which drives up the cost. There's the ART TubeOpto, Focusrite Clarett OctoPre, Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre, Midas XL48. For way more money you can look at the options from RME and Lynx. There are also some older and more affordable devices on the used market that I've looked at, like the Frontier Designs Tango 24, Marian Adcon, and one whose name escapes me...I'll edit this comment if I can remember what that thing was called... I've been eyeing the Ferrofish Pulse 16, which takes 2xADAT and converts them to 16 line inputs and 16 line outputs, but my current interface has 2xADAT I/O so I can take advantage of all 16 channels.
@@YHRS Thanks for the info. I am looking high and low too and the choices seem limited. I want to have a hybrid setup with my analog console and have access to some of my vintage out board gear. It just seems hard to find the unit I want with at least 24 in's and outs 9i prefer 32 in/out if possible) but i think I'd be happy with 24 in/outs...(TRS is what I would like also for connectivity). Thanks. Phil
Thank you very much for the information ! . I have a question. once the connections are made. Is it possible to manage I / O of Ada 8200 from totalmix for routing?
Hi! Thanks for the video! I use the imputs like preamps and then the back outputs to the mixer (dont have the digital conection) but it has a lot of noise! How can i make it less noisy
I've got a question: At 13:25 you are talking about the output configuration of the channels and how easy you can set them. I'm just trying the same but Ableton there's nothing to configure, just switching on/off the channels. Output 9 & 10 is S/PDIF, so the analog outs are 11-18! This setting is confusing when you route them to a mixer with 16 channels. Do somebody know a way to kick out that pre-configured S/PDIF 9 /10??? Thanks for support :-)
hello, I would like to know if there is any delay in the analog outputs of the behringer preamplifier, I mean when I send an input signal, I'll explain I would like to connect the analogue outputs to a mixer so that the artist can listen to his performance in real time so as to have latency 0. Is it possible? I thank you in advance, good job.
The amount of latency is more determined by the audio interface that this is connected to. Remember, the ADA8200 isn't an audio interface, but an add-on for an existing interface. I haven't noticed any additional latency introduced by the ADA.
@@jefrysound-gianfranco9324 Oh OK I understand. You can pass through the preamps straight to the outputs on the back by hooking a TOSLink cable from the ADAT input to the ADAT output on the ADA8200. There is only a very slight latency in doing so, maybe 1 or 2 milliseconds. It's just enough to throw things out of phase a bit, but not enough to affect timing if you're monitoring from it. Best of luck!
Is the ADA8200 bi-directional at the same time if you connect both ADAT cables to your sound card; i.e. inputs appear in DAW and you can use outputs at the same time? I am assuming it is, but if anyone can confirm that would be great. Thanks.
Indeed, I have both the ADAT in and ADAT connected to the ADAT in/out on my interface. From my DAW I can see all 8 ADAT inputs and all 8 ADAT outputs available to assign.
Correct! The PC sees the 8 inputs on my interface, plus the 8 inputs from the ADA8200, for a total of 16 inputs. Same for outputs. It sees 8 analog outputs from my interface plus the 8 outputs from the ADA8200.
Hey thank you for the video. Just a quick question. Are the ins and outs completely independent from each other ? I have the ada8200 I’m currently only using the ins I have 4 synths connected in stereo using up all 8 slots. I’m about to get a summing mixer soon. Wondering if I can send the 8 outs independently to that summing mixer? Hope this makes sense
Your Home Recording Studio thanks a lot man I appreciate your reply. Be on the lookout for a new summing box that’s hitting the market in the next month or 2. It’ll be called the SSU by NAT
I have a question I think you will be able to answer... As this device is stucked at 24bit - 48KHz as a maximum, does it mean that when you use this in combination with your RME both will be at that simple rate (48KHz) or can your RME keeps going at higher levels such as 96KHZ etc.... Thanks a lot for your answer and these great videos...
That's an excellent question. I would give it a try, but I've got everything unhooked and packed away for a move. I'll try it out here in a week or two once I'm moved and unpacked. I'm curious how it'd behave as well. I have a feeling that the whole system will stay at the same sample rate...I can't imagine that 2 different sample rates could be recorded at the same time (1 from the ADA and one from the RME), but I'd love to know for sure.
Thanks a lot for your quick answer take your time to reply with the tests I know how long it can take when you shift to a new place. Also please try to answer or do some others tests to reply to the following 2 questions as well: Question 1 : As you do a cross link between the ADAT IN / OUT do you get any audible delay. I’ll precise my question: Let’s say I plug in 8 analog inputs (From drums) to the front panel of the ADA8200. Then they will be converted to Digital (let’s say at 24 bit / 48 KHz). I think as per the specifications this process will take more or less 0.55 ms. These will be sent through ADAT to my RME interface (UFX). Then I’ll use “Totalmix software” to route these 8 signals (Drums) to the Corresponding ADAT OUT of the RME. These in turns will be sent to the ADAT in of the ADA 8200. Now at this step I’m able to plug in a PA system, compressor, external mixer or whatever to pick back the drums sound from the analog outputs of the ADA8200. My question is during this entire process with an internal routing, do you feel an audible latency ? Question 2 : If I need to add 2 ADA8200, do you think there is way to duplicate the signal coming from the RME Interface (like a multi BNC plug) ? Thanks again a keep uploading videos, you are really doing a great stuff my friend
i am very late to ask. but 1 question. When ADAT ch1 out from interface is coming out as Ana1 will preamp pot on ch1 work? I mean to ask can i attenuate gain from preamp?
I still use the BNC cable for my setup, but some of the comments here are saying that you can sync over ADAT via the TOSLink cable. I have yet to try that, but it seems possible, and that would negate the use for the BNC cable.
Yes I have the ada8200 connected using only the optical audio cable and have the word clock set up though the same wire. It is limited to 48khz tho if you’re used to a higher recording rate.
Sooo, I'm about to purchase 3 of those ada 8200,link them to a behringer fca1616 (the interface specifically tought for those ones) and those 24 in/out will get me over control of a 24 ch mixer, wich will be my nexus to route every outboard on, I wanted to do this just to avoid patchbays forever and for the sake of analog mix/mastering confort and sound... Just one question...how do I hook up 3 of these units by and still manage their WORD clock if the inuts has just 1 WORD connection each? O.o
I think that what you'll need is a word clock distributor. I've never used one, so I don't really know the difference between a good one and a bad one. I see that ART has one for $99, but other brands stretch into the $300, $500, even $700 range.
Your interface will see the ADA8200 as 8 inputs and 8 outputs, so if you can route audio to individual outputs in your DAW, then you can output up to 8 different channels over the ADA8200.
hi. Where did you plug your return into. I have a Yamaha MG10XU and I would like to use the preamp to record vocals but im having trouble understanding the connections. would you know how?
This is an ADAT preamp, intended to be used with an audio interface that has ADAT in and out connectivity. But it could work with your mixer if you feed the ADA8200's ADAT input to its own ADAT output, which will pass through signal from the front preamps to the back outputs. Then you'd run XLR-TRS cables from the outputs to *line* inputs on your mixer.
I sure haven't noticed any noise from the outputs. I use the inputs very frequently, but I guess I don't use the outputs very often. But the few times I have used the outputs, they're just as quiet as I would expect them to be.
Thanks for sharing, Just a question, can i connect the Behriger ADA 8200 to my Audient Id 14 considering that Audient id 14 has only ADAT in ? it means that Audient is the Slave, and Behringer is the master........ Thanks in advance Francesco
I found this: support.audient.com/hc/en-us/articles/202395159-iD14-Digital-Input-Setup It says that the id14 can't be the master and must be the slave. So you'd want to set the switch on the ADA8200 to one of the two master positions.
Wow thank you for taking the time to make a dummy proof (me) video. I just purchased a Behringer ADA8200 and will be pairing it with a Motu 828x via optical. Is the BNC clock sync necessary?! Thanks again...
That's great! There was some debate about whether the BNC cable is required. Apparently you could also sync the ADA8200 over ADAT, but I've been using the BNC cable. So I guess my answer is: maybe :)
Actually yes you can! I've been meaning to post a short video about this. Set the slider on the back to one of the "master" positions, and it sends front inputs straight to the back outputs (input 1 -> output 1, etc.)
What would be the use in passing audio straight through tho? Just curious, if your bypassing the adat doesn't that defeat the purpose of using the thing?
thaprofessab It's handy if you have spare line inputs on your interface, and you need preamps to feed those line inputs. It incurs a bit of latency, but is handy if you don't have ADAT connections.
Since the ADA8200 is just an add-on for an existing audio interface, you'd use whatever monitoring control you already use for your audio interface. Personally, I use the Advanced Remote Control by RME, which controls volume and other functions of my FireFace UCX interface.
If I understand your question, you want to know if the ADA8200 can add 8 channels to a Focusrite Scarlett? If that's the question, then the answer is yes. As long as the Focusrite that you're using has ADAT inputs and outputs. The ADA8200 can add 8 inputs and 8 outputs to any existing interface that uses ADAT connectivity.
Obviously I still don't have a 100% grasp on the subject :-)
But still, thanks a ton for your suggestion, it's made me a very happy guy!
If I end up going exclusively instrumental, you'll know why!
your vocals from what ive heard sounded good
I'm having issues with my Focusrite 18i20 syncing/locking with my Beheringer ADA8200. I've set my Focusrite as the master, ran ADAT out from the Behringer, and into the Focusrite. I'm having issues getting the Behringer to lock with the Focusrite, and get signal from the Bheringer into StudioOne.
any help would be appreciated!
7 years later, you're still helping people with their audio puzzles - superb video, thanks so much :)
Great, so glad to help!
Not sure, but I wouldn’t expect you to be able to use the outs unless you connected them up with a second optical cable. Not really sure, though!
Love seeing a fellow Reaper user making some incredibly helpful content. Thanks!!!
This man knows, and conveys the information with ease!
Why thanks!
This video just got you a subscriber. I was having a hard time hooking up my UC to my ada and now I think I am good. Thank you
You got a new subscriber here. I watch a lot of professional studio videos, but i learn just as much watching non-professionals, because we struggle with the same things. But maybe you are professional. I didn't intend to make assumptions.
Awesome, thanks so much! I'm definitely not a professional, just a huge geek about these things :)
Hi! I have the Behringer ADA 8000 but I can't see the outputs listed in Pro Tools? the inputs work fine. do you know what that could be?
same here in cubase
@@AdrianRC991 I worked out why it's because I only had one day cable connected
@@digitaltrackz thanks man, i was thinking about that hehe
Your video was the answer to all my doubts. Thank you so much!
Many thanks,
Pete from Auchtermuchty, Scotland.
Hey, I have the same equipmet setup as you with the 1820, and I just got my 8200 in, but can't seem to get any output from the 8200 detected in my DAW. I would love to hear any insight you might have, or if you could share how you got yours to work it would be insanely helpful!
Cheers Your Home Recording Studio, just bought one to get a total 16 inputs and really helped with some of the features
That's great to hear! Hope you're enjoying all those inputs ;)
Thanks for your advice and your dedicated time to help many of us.
You're very welcome, and thank you for watching!
Could you explain how to route the outputs for the ADA8200 in total mix to work with logic?
I have the clock working as it should but I’m yet to get signal connected to the ADA8200
Thank you. Very usefull for us - Merci, ca nous a été très utile !
It's great to hear that this was helpful!
Handy note: if you do just want to use this as a passthrough with phantom power you can just plug the ADAT Output straight into the Input. You're basically just looping back the output.
You can even get an adat splitter and thus keep the adat going to the interface as well
Does that make it possible to adjust the input gain and let the signal continue into a compressor via line out?
Superb video! Details and guidance is so helpful. Thank You
pretty sure you don't need word clock from the master interface when you are using TOSlink Optical sync.
@@YHRS thank you so much for replying, I realize after loads of research that this was probably an elementary question. I appreciate you being kind
Thank you very much, your video was very helpful for me!
About the IN / OUT thing: *Yes, you can use it as a standalone preamp* .
The standard routing for this thing is:
Channel IN - ADAT Out
ADAT In - Channel OUT
So in theory, you can just patch de Adat Out with the Adat In with an Adat cable and the signal should flow from the analog ins to the analog outs.
@@YHRS good point.
Thanks
Awesome stuff man! Thank you
How many of these can I adat together with my 18i20 3rd gen?
Here are my needs;
12 channels for drums.
I dont know if it needs a host interface, or if it will run as a stand-alone interface without a host (like my 18i20 or equivalent), but this would be a killer option if its true.
gr8 vid .. can we use just the adat without the word clock
Thanks! And yes, you can sync over ADAT instead of using the BNC cable.
@@YHRS thankx👍🏼
Your lesson is very very important to thank you so much.
@@YHRS thanks for taking the time! 👌
19:54 Did you make video about the compressor ? Whats the brand ?
Love that Lone Star Special
Merci !!!
Thanks !!!👍
The "out" question have a response 👍
🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵🤘😍
Connection should be only thru Toslink cables I believe(?)
Downloaded Reaper to evaluate and recreate your steps but I still have the same issue... just can't figure it out...
@@YHRS Thanks for your time and suggestion. Hope I can figure it out soon as outboard gear is sure enticing!!

Can I ask you? I think you don’t need the clock sync via bnc cable since by linking the adat cable it passes the clock sync as well
Because what happens if for example I would like to add two of those behringer in order to have 16 preamps
How would you link it since the is no clock out on the ada8200?
I am asking because I have the rme 800 and I am thinking get two of those behringers
And I am very curious to see if that is possible ?
Just got a ADA8200 in Running it with the Uphoria, this video helps, thanks, got a question though, I got some TOSlink cables and they are super hard to get connected properly it seems, also there is a rubber covering on the ends of the eyes, is that suppose to be removed? thanks
I removed the rubber covering, it worked....thanks for the videos
john snow awesome, I was just typing a comment to that effect :)
I just see them as 8 additional hardware inputs on the top row, 8 additional software playback channels on the middle row, and 8 additional hardware output on the bottom row.
thx mate. 🙂
is it possible to connect an rme fireface 800 to my little fireface 400 - and then also put 2 ada 8200 to the rme's?
best, felix
I'm new to home recording and a little bit confused. Is the ada8000 a independent interface? Does it work on it's own?
Thanks so much!!!
Hello there!
Thanks for the video!
A quick question. DId you notice some latency using ADA8200 as a patch?
Thank you in advance!
Ste
Really useful review, you ROCK! ... This video is from a few years ago, is the ADA8200 still working well?
Thanks! Yes, the ADA8200 is still alive and well! It's been powered up pretty much 24x7 since I got it. I think that the only times I've ever turned it off were when I moved to a new house a couple of times :)
@@YHRS Cool! I've got one now :)
Exactly what I was looking for
Awesome! I hope it was helpful!
Does this ADA8200 work as a standalone preamp without adat, so I can use it together with the Tascam us-16x08 to amplify ipunts that don't have a preamp?
2024 and you're still helping :D
Ok thanks for the response. However, I really don't know how to patch the output to the input.
@@wesleyhendricks153 It's just a matter of plugging one end of the TOSLink cable into the ADAT output, and the other end into the ADAT input. It's that simple!
Oh really? Wow. Thanks for the advice. It's much appreciated. Regards.
I do it myself sometime but after a few plays I notice something is off then I realize oh yea ping lol Keep doing what you are doing great job!!
not seen any ping in my DAW ?
@@feet57 Well since you didn't say what DAW you use there is no way we could help. You have to give us more information. Like the DAW you use and your interface and so on. But if you tell us we can help you figure it out
Nice video mate. Would this device work well with an apollo twin? Thanks!
Thanks! @@YHRS
Am I understanding this correctly that the 8 XLR outputs are *direct* from the inputs? They aren't sent from a DAW?
Gday Thanks for doing the follow up video. Shame it cant accept 8 front inputs and output 2 XLR at back to an 2 channel XLR audio interface , quite limiting being connected to an audio interface only via adat
It can connect 8 XLR outputs from the back to anything that'll accept a line-level signal. So you could plug those into 8 line inputs on an audio interface. Just connect the ADAT input to the ADAT output, and it becomes a pass-thru from the preamps on the front to the line outputs on the back.
Hi there! Do you have any clue if the analog inputs are independent from the gain knob? Best regards, Erlend -Norway
Hello! I'm not sure I 100% understand the question. The gain knobs on the front of the unit control the input gain of each of the 8 analog inputs on the front of the unit.
Hello! question, can i use the Behringer alone to record my drums direct to the computer? thanks!
I wonder of i can connect 2 ADAs to a behringer 1820. Its that possible? Or is it better to just get a digital mixer like the x air 18?
Thanks!
Question, could this be used to connect a mixer?
A little confused by how the outputs work on the unit, is it just direct monitoring or would they work like outputs on my audio interface where I can send my whole mix and effects from my DAW? I'm looking to add my outputs to my live setup, don't really need more inputs.
They would work just like outputs on your audio interface. They'll show up as potential outputs in your DAW just like the ones built into your interface. With my interface and Reaper, both the inputs and outputs show up as ADAT 1 through ADAT 8.
Ah that's perfect then thanks for the quick reply!
You're welcome! Just make sure that your interface has an ADAT output. I've noticed that some interfaces have ADAT input, but not ADAT output. So it'd be worth double-checking just to make sure.
What latency figures can you achieve at various sample rates / buffer sizes?
And its currently on sale at Sweetwater for cheaper than the UCX!
what is happening if u dont have world clock on the audio interface ?Can set it on behringer as master and swich on what rate btw 48.0 and 44.1 ?
Thanks! Yes, the ADAT inputs and outputs will be visible in TotalMix, so you can route to/from them.
@@YHRS thanks, I thought the analogue outputs were directed by mic preamps. thank you for answering my question, good work and good music. 👍🎼🎵🎶
@@YHRS thank you very useful information. good music...🎼🎵🎶🎶
@@YHRS Many thanks - very helpful
So the 8 inputs of the behringer convert to Pc as multitrack? So the PC sees 16 inputs ?
Yes, the outputs are 8 discrete channels. So you can send signal to each of them from your DAW. That'd be a good fit for a summing mixer.
Also please try to answer or do some others tests to reply to the following 2 questions as well:
Question 1 :
As you do a cross link between the ADAT IN / OUT do you get any audible delay. I’ll precise my question:
Let’s say I plug in 8 analog inputs (From drums) to the front panel of the ADA8200.
Question 2 :
If I need to add 2 ADA8200, do you think there is way to duplicate the signal coming from the RME Interface (like a multi BNC plug) ?
Thanks again a keep uploading videos, you are really doing a great stuff my friend
i am very late to ask. but 1 question. When ADAT ch1 out from interface is coming out as Ana1 will preamp pot on ch1 work? I mean to ask can i attenuate gain from preamp?
Thank you for this! are all the three cables needed to connect the behringer to the RME in all circumstances?
Oh god, watching you with leads is like nails on a chalk board for me haha, awesome btw, thanks
This was the day that I learned that it's really difficult to plug in TOSLink cables when I'm not looking directly at the connector :)
Isn't TOSlink a terrible name though, sounds like a genre of porn I've no interest in seeing
Very interesting and instructional tutorial :)
sorry i just came here but im looking if we are able to playback multichannel from DAW with the Behringer ADA..
Your interface will see the ADA8200 as 8 inputs and 8 outputs, so if you can route audio to individual outputs in your DAW, then you can output up to 8 different channels over the ADA8200.
@@YHRS Thanks i will give i try since is not so expensive. ill keep you posted about. cheers!
I have heard that the outputs are really noisy. What are your experience regarding noise?
I sure haven't noticed any noise from the outputs. I use the inputs very frequently, but I guess I don't use the outputs very often. But the few times I have used the outputs, they're just as quiet as I would expect them to be.
@@YHRS very good to know. I'm thinking about buying it
Thanks for sharing,
Just a question, can i connect the Behriger ADA 8200 to my Audient Id 14 considering that Audient id 14 has only ADAT in ?
it means that Audient is the Slave, and Behringer is the master........
Thanks in advance
Francesco
I found this: support.audient.com/hc/en-us/articles/202395159-iD14-Digital-Input-Setup
It says that the id14 can't be the master and must be the slave. So you'd want to set the switch on the ADA8200 to one of the two master positions.
thank you !!!
Can I use the ADA8200 as a standalone preamp, connect an ADAT cable from the ADAT output to the ADAT input on the ADA8200 for a loopback connection.
@Your Home Recording Studio. ahh okay makes more sense when you put it that way, thanks mate.
Sorry for the stupid question but how do you control de monitoring volume coming from the speakers/monitors?
Since the ADA8200 is just an add-on for an existing audio interface, you'd use whatever monitoring control you already use for your audio interface. Personally, I use the Advanced Remote Control by RME, which controls volume and other functions of my FireFace UCX interface.
I'm going to be running an 8200 into a profire 2626. Is there any driver installation for the Behringer?
Nope, no need for drivers for the ADA8200, since it only connects to your audio interface and not directly to the computer.
Hi! Interface behringer can be slave of The focusrite scarllet 8 canais ?
Thank you
If I understand your question, you want to know if the ADA8200 can add 8 channels to a Focusrite Scarlett?
If that's the question, then the answer is yes. As long as the Focusrite that you're using has ADAT inputs and outputs. The ADA8200 can add 8 inputs and 8 outputs to any existing interface that uses ADAT connectivity.
@@YHRS thank you
Thanks for your help!
I want to convert 8 tracks/channels from an 8 track reel to reel to 8 digital tracks to edit/mix them on a laptop. Will the Behringer work for that?
