Amazing lesson!!
I’ve always liked Jeff Carlisi’s style-very melodic and soaring tone. Saw an interview with him and what an interesting guy. Has a degree in architecture and because of economic downturn joined.38 Special. The rest is history. Very humble, intelligent man.
Boy does this bring back memories. My late brother and I had a basement band some 40 years ago along with a drummer friend and this was one of the songs from our repertoire. I can see now that I didn't play it quite correctly but it was close enough to have fun. Thanks for doing this one.
I hear ya brother! When I started learning to play guitar, (1980-82) we were jammin 38 Special, Molley Hatchet, Skynyrd,.AC/DC, Foreigner, all the usual suspects. Those guys were really professional quality musicians. Great vocals and instruments! We actually sounded pretty good, even without a bass player. Man, guitar playing and rock/metal has come a LONG way since then!
I learned this song by ear when I was 19. Long time ago. My friends, Randy Stith (guitar/vocals) and Randy Gindlesperger (drums/guitar/vocals) had invited me to start jamming with them. I HAD to learn songs that would show them that for a beginner, I could learn by ear and perform the music. GREAT DAYS! Thanks Carl! You're a MASTER!
Im not sure if you know this, but YOU, sir, are officially the man.. no tab for this song ever sounds right, and now i know why. You got my sub, buddy!
Carl you are a great teacher! Thank you for the attention to detail as well as your patience and work ethic! I am 68 years old, spent a heckuva a lot of time picking up the needle and starting the song over ( or rewinding the cassette) to learn too many songs from the time I was 14 years old...LOL.. thank God for the technology of the 21st century and people like you who know how to use... and appreciate that you always do your best to choose the right guitar and sound for the different song styles you teach all of us.
Not only a great timeless song about youth, but a deceptively intricate guitar composition. And Jeff's Solo in HOL !!! One of the best solos ever, period. Thanks for helping me see my mistakes since learning it by ear in 1981 🎶🎸 !!!
Loved this!!! Makes me feel like it's 1983 and I'm senior driving around campus with my 8 track blaring my theme song. Thanks bro! Great transcription !!!
Serendipity! (Great word, don't get to use it enough) This came on the radio last night and I thought, "Hey, I ought to look up a lesson for this". Thanks for the lesson Carl!
Great tone and lesson, Carl! Classic '80s rock... and written by Jim Peterik (Survivor). Peterik also wrote .38 Special's two other biggest tunes, "Rockin' Into The Night" and "Caught Up In You". Strange trivia for sure.
Holy cow, talk about Synchronicity! I just watched a video with Jeff Carlisi talking about writing this song, and here it is from my favorite TH-cam teacher. I’ve been jamming on it all week. Thanks a million, you must have psychic powers. Now to learn it the right way to play. Keep rocking.!!
Not synchronicity!! It’s Google tracking your activity then suggesting other related videos! Scary stuff! Big Brother!! 1984!! We all need to take back our privacy!
Thank you for yet another detailed breakdown of an amazing classic song. You have helped my playing more than private lessons and tab books ever did and I am eternally grateful!!
Carl you make it look so easy! Looks like I’ve got quite a few days of play-rewind-play-pause-rewind-play ahead of me! Great lesson to a great song like others have said that I knew the intro. But now I’ll know the song note for note! You killed it! 🤘
Great job on this one Carl, especially the solos. The lesson was not too fast, not too slow. It would have taken me many hours to figure it all out, so thanks for saving me a ton of time!
Hold on loosely, but don’t let go. If you cling too tightly to her, you’re gonna lose control. Your baby needs someone to believe in, and a whole lot of space to breathe in. Such words of wisdom.
Hey Carl! You never disappoint with your choices man..lot going on here despite the simplicity to the progression... awesome work man..I've known the intro for 30 years..🤘😜🎸now I am gonna finish what I started..lol.. Les Paul studio is out and ready.. 😂
I hung in I think you wore out on the last part ! This song has some of the greatest shredding and runs only a few stick out but this song has you feelin good during and after its finished ! Great job on the video !
You should do a tutorial of the lead guitar of teeth of the hydra by steve vai, i love the way he plays it but I can’t find video tutorials anywhere because i don’t understand tabs and i think you explain really well 👌
Just saw these guys in concert last week! Fantastic show! Vocals were spot on! Guitar playing was better than ever with the addition of Jerry Riggs (Radar Rider, Heavy Metal Movie epic opening '59 Corvette seen from the band Riggs). Thank you for the hard work and sharing this timeless classic from 38 Special. There are few who even come close to your awesome teaching style.
Great job breaking down this awesome song! If your on a 38 special kick, Fantasy Girl is another great one!! Thanks for your time and effort working this out!!
I’m 30 minutes in and you’ve played so much stuff ! I gotta break this down into parts like 12 min 16 min 26 mins ! I gotta stop for a bit !! Great work no wonder you held back on this one !!! Great song tho !
Just when I am starting to get the last lesson down he puts out this 🔥 lesson ... well last lesson gets break time for some .38 special ... thanks sensai .. you don't sound like your going through puberty anymore that is good lol.. glad your better
Dude all of your lessons are top notch. You have a Awesome ear for breaking down parts. Btw the Les Paul sounds Awesome in the lesson. What Amps are you using?
Hey Carl, thanks for doing this one🙏 This is one of my favorite tunes, espescially because of the melodic solo. I recently heard "Arizona" from the Scorpions. And it blew my mind! Could you please do a lesson for it? The guitarwork of Matthias Jabs is to good to not do one🤘
I searched this up again and was like"oh i guess i missed it when i looked a few months ago" and now i realize this is only a week old and i didnt even have to ask!
Hey Carl! Thanks for this lesson. This was one of the first songs I learned to play, but I found out I was playing parts of it incorrectly. Now, if I sound bad, at least I'm doing it right! 🤪 I'm still battling the pancreatic tumor. Thanks for the kind words during your last livestream.
Thank you again Mr B,I concur that every lick is able to be used in my own material, when I'm jamming or practicing. Much obliged and words cannot express my gratitude Sir. May peace be upon you!. My apologies for the edit or whatever, was wondering about the song entitled the devil's child by judas priest. Only part I gotta" hard time"with is the pre chorus I guess is what it's called. Oh no you're so damn wicked. That part haha. But yeah dude, bad ass on your channel. Hope to keep seeing ya for many years
Can you do a lesson on Just a Bullet Away by Metallica. I’ve searched for good tabs on all parts of the song but nothing would be as good as your lesson
request ideas : Rory Gallagher (hits and deep cuts) More Robert Johnson or delta blues Blues Power - Albert King Bass guitar (When you do all the songs) Live versions of songs More Beatles (yes more) Slayer
Damn... Yr tone sounds freekin spot ON. ....maybe just a touch too much gain ? ...but it's prob. cuz there's no mix running over the top....BRAVO. In the late 70's Thru the 80's Into the 90's 38 Special was a freekin hit machine!! that blend of solid rhythm, a brace of jammin guitars, great melodies and a lil bit o' southern fried rock was a potent combo...as a guitar loving kid... 38 special jams ALWAYS had great rhythm guitar....they are all "air guitar" gold 👍👍❤️
Carl, can you please make a video on Perfect by the Smashing Pumpkins? I can’t find any good videos of just how Billy Corgan plays it and I feel like you would make the best. Thanks.
Thanks Carl- I’ll be working on this one. You could use this lesson and roll right into “Overkill” by Men at Work- similar chord changes for the versus and the song has a great guitar solo. Cheers!
Great song Carl. Thanks for doing it. I wanted to ask if you could do a Police song called. " Message in a Bottle". I almost get it but I bet you can show me the right way to play this song. It's one of my favorite song I used to play for my daughter when she was a youngster. But I always felt that is wasn't quite right. Thanks brother. God bless and shalom alahkiem. Amen

I'm 28. Been waiting for a tutorial on this song since I first listened to it 13 years ago playing guitar hero. Thanks for bringing back the memories
39:55 "and then we get to a very killah lick!" Amazing lick (and solo overall) by the very underrated Jeff Carlisi. Great job as always!
Now we need Caught Up In You!! 😍 thank you Carl!
Absolutely love this song. Pure and strong rock at its finest!

Nah, CO-written.
Peterik is a great writer. (And apparently the guitar riff was written by a third writer.)
