    Notes, technical stuff: Yeah, it's very scratchy sounding. It's one of the quietest soundtracks on the Genesis. When it's played back on a YM2612, the "ladder noise" bug actually eats into it, which is why it's scratchy and inarticulate--when the envelopes open and close they drag out in a distorted mess. Since it's also closer to the (unavoidable) noise floor, it's literally noisier too. I probably should have recorded this on the Genesis 3, it sounds marginally better on there...

    • @wilddogtc2058
      @wilddogtc2058 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it quieter to make it sound better on YM3438 MDs?

    • @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL
      @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@wilddogtc2058 I don't think so. It does sound a bit cleaner on them, but typically games that are louder sound better, due to the way the built in DAC works. That's true of both chips. I really don't know the reason.

      @ChiptunedRaijin ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL Low volume soundtracks do indeed sound worse. The YM2612 itself of course has the DAC distortion bug as you mentioned, but the chips also output at 9bit due to the internal DAC (and the output is dithered, thus more noise). That means the YM2612 is essentially doubly noisy, and while the DAC distortion was fixed on the YM3438, it's still 9bit, so still noisy.
      The only true clean OPN2 series chip is the YMF276 (OPN2-L used in the FM Towns 2) which is using an external DAC instead, so it outputs as clean as the other FM chips.

    • @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL
      @DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ChiptunedRaijin Thanks for the info! I swear that the DACs must not be linear either, even the 3438 sounds worse at low volumes, like the "steps" are bigger on the DAC "ladder" (if you know what I mean)

    I never understood how Capcom could screw this stuff up so bad. I mean the fan community has been able to really approve these titles. But gosh darn, Capcom really dropped the ball compared to other devs on the system. And they had experience with this kind of Arcade sound hardware setups. :( .

    • @Trolazo12345
      @Trolazo12345 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Capcom not even with the YM2151 more PCM were able to create something truly good beyond SF2, just listen to Captain Comando from CPS1 and you'll realize that it sounds worse than many Genesis games.

    • @Oysterblade84
      @Oysterblade84 ปีที่แล้ว

      The theory is that Capcom had to go with something different for SSFII on the Mega Drive seeing as their arcade original version used CPS-2 sound hardware (much like the SNES). The Mega Drive/Genesis couldn't do MIDI and they didn't want to just cut and paste the exact same soundtrack from ''Special Champion Edition'' so what were they supposed to do? They made a different sounding FM ost for this game to make up for not being able to use CPS-2. Most people would agree it's a more abrasive sounding soundtrack but it got the job done and I do prefer the bass guitar in this one over Special Champion Edition's. Much like Dustin's criticism, this would sound better if it wasn't so quiet.

    The Nintendo fanboys have already arrived to trash the sound of the Genesis, the sound of this port as the previous one did too much damage to the reputation of the sound of the Genesis (And also to its colors), mostly due to the low quality in the PCM and how simple this sounds, that's why I will always have an irrational hatred for those ports.

      I imagine that at some stage of the game's development they realized that the 32 Mbit game on Snes wouldn't fit on a 32 Mbit cartridge on Genesis. So someone came up with the idea of adding a mapper to increase the space in rom and thus incorporate all the graphics and sounds of the Snes version, but now they had more unused rom space, so they decided to fill that space with some extra graphics for the character´s endings, and a little more animation for the game´s intro.
