  • Sir Christopher Lee, at University College Dublin, discusses his favourite characters and movie roles including Lord Summerisle in the Wicker Man, and the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah in Jinnah
    www.ucd.ie/news....
Legendary British horror actor, Sir Christopher Lee who portrayed the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror Film was awarded Honorary Life Membership by the UCD Law Society.
"We are honoured to present Sir Christopher Lee with Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society. His corpus of work is truly legendary," says Francis McNamara, Auditor of the UCD Law Society.
"His dedication to his craft for more than half a century should serve as an inspiration to each and every one of us."
"His portrayal of the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror production terrified audiences throughout the world, and as a result Christopher Lee, who stands at 6 foot 5 inches tall, became one of the most recognisable faces and figures of cinema."
Previous recipients of Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society include: Jessie Jackson, Bill Clinton, Jeremy Irons, and Seamus Heaney.
But it was not until the early 2000s that his career reached even higher heights from his appearances in two blockbuster film franchises: as Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003), and as Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones (2002).
Born in 1922 in London, England, Christopher Lee is of noble Italian ancestry on his mother's side (Carandini). His mother, Contessa Estelle Marie Carandini di Sarzano, was a noted Edwardian beauty and was painted by John Lavery, Oswald Birley and Olive Snell and sculpted by Clare Sheridan, a cousin of Winston Churchill.
The Carandini family is one of the oldest in Europe and traces itself back to the first century AD. It is believed to have been connected with the Emperor Charlemagne, and as such was granted the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
In 2009, Lee (89) was knighted by Prince Charles in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the film and television industries. And this year (2011), he received a BAFTA Fellowship.

Sir Christopher Lee was brilliant in the movie "Jinnah". In fact, brilliant is a small word to praise such a wonderful and amazing actor. He won the hearts of all Pakistanis with his portrayal of Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah. As a Pakistani I would recommend all Sir Christopher Lee's fans to watch it. RIP Sir Lee.

It's a shame Christopher Lee's brilliant performance in Jinnah got so little attention worldwide, especially compared to the amount of attention received by Gandhi, which launched Ben Kingsley to stardom.
Not too surprising though, since the historical figure Muhammad Ali Jinnah himself wasn't as famous as Mahatma Gandhi, despite both being important figures in the nonviolent Indian independence movement.

It was a brilliant film, and it saddens me that it got so little international attention.
There are very few actors that I respect, Christopher Lee is on top of the list.

Jinnah is really undermined - not that he was any less than gandhi or anyone of that stature - he's just undervalued. Gandhi's more famous because of the gandhi statues standing tall in different parts of the world which were totally funded by Indian govts.

@ hjmyfgyfhfkhfkuyghgu- You state : "Hes gotten so old, I feel sorry for him". You must be joking. The man is 91 yrs old here. In great shape, is sharp as a tack, articulate, total recall, funny, still commanding audiences , big pay checks, and appearing in major motion pictures. Whats to feel sorry for? If you or I make it to 91, we can only hope to have a 10th of what this remarkable man has done, is doing, and will continue to do. Christopher Lee is the BOMB!!!!

Reptilian yeah most people become completely senile around 60 and they live like the rest of their lives like a decoration plant in the living room.
But I've notice those who use their brain in their daily work for problem solving, mental exercises or memorizing, remain just as fresh and quick witted as they were in the younger age. I'm amazed by his memory capacity. Though it makes me feel very sad that most likely we've seen him for the last time as Saruman.

Goddamn, he is so wonderful. I'm not into the LotR stuff, but his autobio is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. Seriously. Bond villain, Sith Lord, Dracula, Opera singer, met Sigmund Freud, witnessed the last public execution in France, had his finger broken by Errol Flynn......just a fascinating man.

in today's world of using young actors for for all important rolls, I am happy for the wisdom to bring the older more experience actors like lee to good roles again. Older actors are regulated to small bit parts or play mean people. I remember in a Holly Wood stunt man with Burt Renolds! an old cowboy actor who was famous in his time had a bit part as Burt and another actor called him an old fart, sad!
The young actors of today have a long way to be a patch of Christopher lees Shirt as good actors with their over paid salaries.

Saying one thing and acting upon it are two different things, "you are free in the Soviet Union, there exists socialism and democracy here!". However in reality things are not only quite different, but in fact exactly the opposite.
