  • Sir Christopher Lee, at University College Dublin, discusses Gandalf and Saruman in J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings
    www.ucd.ie/news/2011/11NOV11/0...
    Legendary British horror actor, Sir Christopher Lee who portrayed the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror Film was awarded Honorary Life Membership by the UCD Law Society.
    "We are honoured to present Sir Christopher Lee with Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society. His corpus of work is truly legendary," says Francis McNamara, Auditor of the UCD Law Society.
    "His dedication to his craft for more than half a century should serve as an inspiration to each and every one of us."
    "His portrayal of the blood-sucking vampire Dracula in the 1958 Hammer Horror production terrified audiences throughout the world, and as a result Christopher Lee, who stands at 6 foot 5 inches tall, became one of the most recognisable faces and figures of cinema."
    Previous recipients of Honorary Life Membership of the UCD Law Society include: Jessie Jackson, Bill Clinton, Jeremy Irons, and Seamus Heaney.
    But it was not until the early 2000s that his career reached even higher heights from his appearances in two blockbuster film franchises: as Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001-2003), and as Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones (2002).
    Born in 1922 in London, England, Christopher Lee is of noble Italian ancestry on his mother's side (Carandini). His mother, Contessa Estelle Marie Carandini di Sarzano, was a noted Edwardian beauty and was painted by John Lavery, Oswald Birley and Olive Snell and sculpted by Clare Sheridan, a cousin of Winston Churchill.
    The Carandini family is one of the oldest in Europe and traces itself back to the first century AD. It is believed to have been connected with the Emperor Charlemagne, and as such was granted the right to bear the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
    In 2009, Lee (89) was knighted by Prince Charles in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the film and television industries. And this year (2011), he received a BAFTA Fellowship.

    In my opinion, Christopher Lee and Ian Mckellen can exchange their own role of Saruman and Gandalf respectively, as they are both great actor with some powerful 'aura' and voice of the wise and evil. However, due to Christopher's age, it is difficult for him to involve in so many actions like Ian did (I know they have someone to perform the stunt), so they settle with their own role that we see in the movie. But the most important thing is that they play their role very well.

    I actually think Tolkien explained why Saruman went “black”: the use of the Palantir which put him in contact with Sauron. The effects of social media in the LoTR world...🤣

    • @alpborakirte801
      @alpborakirte801 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Yes he did explained. But even before he used Palantir his intentions was selfish. He got control of Orthanc and started to search the One ring for himself. Using The Stone of Orthanc didn’t make him evil, just took him under control of Sauron. Even after he believed they will rule Middle Earth together if they will win the war.

      Sauron’s power over people was to make them despair. He projected a kind of overwhelming vision of the future to convince anyone that resistance is foolish. A deception to be sure, but a powerful one to the “wise” such as Saruman and Denethor, individuals who didn’t hold to their knowledge with humility, making them unable to see the arrogance at the heart of their despair.

    • @eliasnorman711
      @eliasnorman711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Saruman was maia to aule, the valar who made the dwarves and was the god of craft and industry. I believe sauron was also. They both had great love of creating new things but i think Tolkien believed that industry was a sure road to evil, probably influenced by growing up in Birmingham in the industrial revolution. But saruman was already well on the way to evil before the palantir. I believe he attempted making his own rings of power and ultimately had no intention of even giving the ring to sauron had he ever found it. He also went from saruman the white to saruman the many coloured. Ive never heard of saruman the black

      It may also be a hint to the palantir. Saruman had it for a very long time, and hid it from the rest of the order. He may have fallen to Saurons tricks through it, like Denethor. And Sauron had the most powerfull one, that could see what the other palantiers would see

    Fun fact about Saruman is that when the 5 wizards came to Middle Earth in the Third Age, Cirdan welcomed them in the Grey Havens. And he saw beforehand that Gandalf the grey was far more noble and wiser than Saruman the white, who was the leader of the wizard order. This was one of the reasons why Saruman disliked Gandalf.

    • @MrNickm28
      @MrNickm28 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Cirdan, not Galadriel. Cirdan was the master of the Grey Havens, the points where those coming into Middle Earth would enter, or conversely, when those who chose to leave Middle Earth, left via the Grey Havens. Cirdan was gifted with far-sight, and also held possession of Narya, the Ring of fire, one of the 3 elven rings. when Gandalf entered Middle Earth, Cirdan saw that Gandalf was perhaps the greatest and wisest of the 5, even through Saruman came first and was initially, ranked higher than Gandalf. It was this foresight which also made Cirdan give his ring to Gandalf so that he could 'kindle the fire in the hearts of men'. Saruman's Elvish name was Curunir, Gandalfs was Mithrandir

    Tolkien made some smart decisions in what he chose not to explain, like being deliberately vague about Sauron's abilities, the details of how Saruman fell, or the identity of the Watcher in the Water and the 'Dark Nameless Things' Gandlf encountered at the roots of the world. Being a fan of horror he knew it was more about what you don't see.

    It is wonderful, that an actor like Mr. Lee, took the time to learn and know the history of his character and his role in this fictional setting. It rings of professionalism.
