This was from the 1st season of the new Top Gear series. James May came on the 2nd season. Also note that there's a black Stig around but he "died" and the white Stig replaced him somewhere around 2nd season, too. Thumbs up for this so that people will know.
@SoulvexUK the engine is lifted from GSX 1300 R Hayabusa 1999 Engine type: 1298 cc liquid-cooled inline-4, DOHC, 16 valves. 175 hp (129 kW)/ 9800 rpm, 141 Nm/ 7 000 rpm. Can your Honda VTEC engine do 9800RPM?
@megal0w his name is Jason Dawe, and he was part of the original hosts. he only lasted one year during the show's first year in 2002, then was replaced by james may
i like how they older one's used to have the mini map / timer / and g-force. bring it back! unless you keep racing two cars at a time, then well make it 3.
The chubby guy is Jason Dawe. James May replaced him from series 2. Dawe is a regular columnist for The Sunday Times motoring section and hosts the Used Car Roadshow on ITV4 and Men & Motors. (CONFESSION: I'd never seen/heard of him before either. I just looked him up on Wikipedia...I think I have too much time on my hands).
@ShowMeSomeLoveS Captain Slow aka James May didn't appear from the start in the New Top Gear series but he only appeared after a few seasons :). Cheers.
@droceretik I have no idea, in the right hand it could be. the bike would be faster in the straight for sure and probably in the corners. (I know, the GSXR1300 weighs 500 pounds, but the average literclass is around 430 pounds...) Truthfully, I'd bet on the bike, but it would be a REALLY close race.
@smokeeater6168 This isnt Top Gear as we know it, because before it was simply a normal tv show that was on at whatever time of the day, a regular car program. But still James May started on Top Gear on season 1, that when TG started only going one way, up!
well this makes me realize how much i like the slightly awkward and goofy yet amazing james may. black stig looked nice though, but i guess the 3rd one has more driving skill?
It's not until you've seen the first season that you really appreciate James May
This was from the 1st season of the new Top Gear series. James May came on the 2nd season. Also note that there's a black Stig around but he "died" and the white Stig replaced him somewhere around 2nd season, too.

Wow, 4 cars on the board? And only full seconds? They've sure come a long way since then!
we've come to expect such good music from Top Gear,
this sounds like a cross between Saturday Night Live's band and elevator music
this view of the power lap with the spedo and the view of the track is sooo much better
@SoulvexUK

@ 1:12 That was an INCREDIBLE SHOT!!!!!! Perfect use of Fish Eye.
oh god, season 1... we are so lucky that the BBC decided to renew it for a second season. Giving James a chance to host again.
I'm glad the show got better... That is a sweet looking car! I want one!
@megal0w thats Jason Dawe. It was in the first series only. He often told you how to get good deals on current cars. James May is a big improvement
The bar when the power lap is done is great they should bring it back
the camera angles are so much better!
You can see how far Top Gear has progressed through the years. I wonder how Dowd is doing.
this is in 2002 (since Jeremy said he was 42 and he was born in 1960). James May didn't join till 2003
@codaniac is this a new or old episode?
Very interesting to see Top Gear in the first season, with no James May and a half empty studio!
How far the show has come...
Jason Dawe really showed what he was good at in this clip.
Offer Jeremy a hanging support and shutting up.
@megal0w his name is Jason Dawe, and he was part of the original hosts. he only lasted one year during the show's first year in 2002, then was replaced by james may
@Kyr4x its from Season One....his name is Jason Dawe
damn the new format is so much better
I like the Race logic VBOX. That is very interesting e I think you should use on all tested cars.
Top Gear from series 1!
@hock3yplaya7 it's actually Jason, one of the original presenters from the first series.
@THPDCF Jason Dawe is a British motoring journalist and television presenter.
Born and raised in Cornwall, England .
I like the telemetry in this old episode
what series is this? because i know that Captain Slow is right now on TopGear.
Most cars shown on Top-Gear have contemporary registration plates so this will have been shot around 2002. "VU 02 WRJ"
i like how they older one's used to have the mini map / timer / and g-force. bring it back! unless you keep racing two cars at a time, then well make it 3.
@luismoiron this is from S1. the other guy is jason dawe. james replaced him a season/series later.
@RandomInternetDog It's pre-May. Notice that last turn wasn't called "Gambon" yet.
This was from the first season of Top Gear, which explains the naff music and no James May (who replaced Jason Dawe from the second season on).
@EnkelV
I don't know if he filled in for May, or came before him, but he was on for only 1 season (I think).
That thing's awesome. I want one.
@Phexler I think it's the first actually. Not positive, but I think so.
This is a very early episode & the other guy is Jason Dawe who went on to do Used Car Roadshow.
@HachiZenki It's not James here, it's Jason Dawe.
Perfect trackday toy! :D
Imagine what would happen if you turbo charge it's engine...Nice car.
@M4XX3F Did not catch that, nice spot! I think that was the first year of "new" Top Gear.
I recon a 13b turbo with a decent gearbox would be better, replace some of those revs with a little more tourque,
reminds of the 86 or capuchino from initial d not alot of power but the weight means everything
@ThunderdomeFan386 Personally, I am partial to the 850 Turbo, and the 240 Wagon, but the 340 is also a VERY nice car.
@01Chenti What's the Ariel Atom's time around the Top gear track?
The chubby guy is Jason Dawe. James May replaced him from series 2. Dawe is a regular columnist for The Sunday Times motoring section and hosts the Used Car Roadshow on ITV4 and Men & Motors. (CONFESSION: I'd never seen/heard of him before either. I just looked him up on Wikipedia...I think I have too much time on my hands).
the zonda wasnt out in '02 was it?
@Anima87 He segment was not really working out. They replaced him with James May.
@brabra6106 : this is from season 1. James May was brought in on season 2!
@ShowMeSomeLoveS Captain Slow aka James May didn't appear from the start in the New Top Gear series but he only appeared after a few seasons :).
Cheers.
@bix1995 A guy they fired maybe 5-6-7 years back..this is a quite old power lap...
Cheers!
@guitarmanaddi He was on before May - this is from the first season.
@guitarmanaddi
thats jason dawe, he was only there for a season before he was replaced with james may
@Holdtheline07 Where'd you see that? You know the speedometer was in miles.. right?
@droceretik I have no idea, in the right hand it could be. the bike would be faster in the straight for sure and probably in the corners. (I know, the GSXR1300 weighs 500 pounds, but the average literclass is around 430 pounds...)

incredible song from 0:49
@MagicalMrSkylar
where from did you get that information that may's dead?
@naterade21
it's from season 1 of Top Gear, before James May replaced Jason Dawe
@kmajorr
well,, Richard Hammond's been doing top gear since 2002 and ever since...
finally, a good video without that annoying 15 second advertisment at the beginning of it
@alehax27 No, this is an old clip from 2001-2002 when TopGear restarted
@Kyr4x He was the 3rd guy before James May. This is from season 1 (2002); you can tell by the weird style of the clip.
@n8glore so didnt replace james may they replaced dawe with him, right?
Why did they upload several really old videos?
@MrPlaystation95
I think it was around since '99
@kmajorr
dude,, do you ever watch top gear?
Has to be one of the very first Top Gear episodes after the retool.
@smokeeater6168 This isnt Top Gear as we know it, because before it was simply a normal tv show that was on at whatever time of the day, a regular car program. But still James May started on Top Gear on season 1, that when TG started only going one way, up!
i love how there is like 6 people there but the new top gear have like 60,000 people in there
@SoulvexUK
Type R vtec can go up to 8400rpm
What great quality of TV that is, fantastic production even in the first series (Of the new episodes that is). That's why Top Gear is so fucking good!
Why did the script writers give the fat guy nothing to say? I guess they wanted Captain Slow instead.
Ah the Black Stig! I remember him! Until that fateful day on the aircraft carrier that is...
this car is awsome, i am going to build one :)
@RandomInternetDog
It's from season 1, before James May replaced Jason Dawe
well this makes me realize how much i like the slightly awkward and goofy yet amazing james may.
black stig looked nice though, but i guess the 3rd one has more driving skill?
Talk about digging up a fossil for this show. Pretty impressive little car too.
Why NOT 720p ?
Holy Yesteryear Batman! What year was this?
Perry as the Stig. He keeps that quiet....
i forget his name he is a car writer for a mag but didnt last past the 1st season then quickly replaced by the legend Cpt slow
i like the guy in the background at 3:42
Dont you guys get it?its old video
It's not old Top Gear, it's the first season of the current Top Gear. James wasn't around until Season 2.
That's quite a crowd they got going there.
They need to bring back the telemetry for the new seasons
i didn't think Hammon would have been able to see over the dashboard
That's soooo awesome.
You should notice this is the old Stig too.
Its weird how few people are in the live audience compared to now days.
@Kyr4x maybe it's May?
@ShowMeSomeLoveS this is form the first season, cpt slow first appeared in the second season :)
"Your nowhere near tall enough"
"im gonna mention power to weight again jeremy" haha
@MrFrederiktorp
yes you can just got to gold it in the special event
This must of been the first series, no James May, Fat Guy, 4 cars on the board, Black Stig, 10 people in the audience!
This is from the very first season and might i add thank god they added James May.
that car is incredible
so.... i can make one myself? where do i buy it?
Jeremy is only 42?
that big guy was a great steadying post for Clarkson !
They should bring back the telemetry display for the new series
no more HD???
