The howl of a Porsche flat 6 under hard acceleration is just glorious.
And good thing too because the sound it makes at idle is garbage
Fun fact: my dad was watching this episode back in 2003 and just when they were about to show off the Porsche, which my dad looked forward to, my mom went into labour with me and they had to rush the hospital, so my dad missed it...

I was lucky enough to have a weekend in one of these. My Boss through me the keys to his Silver GT3 for my B'Day... Best Weekend I ever experienced! Such a fun car to drive....

Without a doubt the finest sounding six-cylinder motor of all time. This includes the RB26 and Ford 3.0 V6.

I love this 2004 911 GT3 it's a fantastic car and it's epic and it looks beautiful and radically cool and awesome with it's beautifully raw and raucous flat 6 engine!!!

Saw a newer model of the GT3 on the road the other day. They've gotten so much sexier. It actually had a look of ferocity to it that could finally hang with the Italian supercars.

Shocking to know much the GT3 cost back then, compared to what it now. GT3 now at 40k would of been a bargain
Baz82 the engine cost 40k the GT3 at the time was 70k and a used one is climbing to 90k same price as a brand new midrange 911 4S.

I love 911's and have a unlce with a SC taga. The GT3 was the best 911. But now its got a PDK gearbox, so its much more of a track day car for people who don't know how to drive.
So glad to see it FULL SCREEN!!

@FISHURMOMBALL True, but the GT3 RS and GT3 are quite different. The RS comes with a completely different aero package, greatly reduced weight, and I believe a few extra horsepower as well. This makes the car about as distinct from the GT3, as the GT2 is from the Turbo (although perhaps not QUITE that extreme.) And, as you sort-of pointed out, neither of them have received a test on the track, which is where those two in particular are said to shine above the rest of the 911 lineup.
That starting to the video is just amazing, in general this is an amazing car review.

The older aircooled have been even meaner, croackier, more sawing, predestine, more genuie. An old suction 993 and a valve exhaust is music. Listen to a BMW E46 M3 CSL, that is together with the Porsche my favorite
It's not my favourite, but is iconic. You could blind fold me and I could probably tell you it's a Porsche just by firing it up.

@mattblack77nz thats true, we are on the 997, but the key difference is the head lights. the 997 has circular head lights whereas the 996 had integrated turn signals on the headlight, that little extension on the insides of the the lens.
And it costs (drumroll) FOURTY GRAND! It's amazing, nowadays you can't even buy a 3 series BMW with that much money XD
+Ricardo Russo you could find solid condition 996's for ~15k+...can't even buy a civic for that much money
i was refferin more to the inflation in car prices in the last 10 years. nowadays it would be unimaginable to buy a 911 for 40k

He was talking about the engine. The engine costs 40k, not the car.
+Ricardo Russo Alot more technology goes into cars because people expect it now also the actual inflation over 10 years in general is quite significant.
If you want an 03 GT3 in good cindition nowadays, you could buy one for less than a brand new Vauxhall Astra or Ford Focus
@eins2001 not mid its rear. Mid is in front for the rear Axle centerline, Rear is will behind it.
@ottacracker They can mate, but the numberplate on the car shows 2003, so this is a old clip, if you watch it officially on the iPlayer the new full shows they will have the option of HD

@Dryzaum The super stripped out version they tested didn't have air con but when you buy it from Porsche you get options. You can get navigation, air con, cd/dvd. The works.

@dalilrafi Same here.It was a big improvement changing the headlights and gives the car a more sporty look.
@jack390 Nope, all 911's except the 1998 911 GT1 which was mid engined, are all rear engined and rear wheel or 4wd. If the engine is in front of the rear axle, how can they fit a set of rear seats? How come when someone opens the rear hatch, I can still see the intake manifold and cylinder heads?

@Chris246t8kr That was what the original car was called. this cars model designition is actually the 996 GT3, but for the sake of tradition, its still called the 911 from the first one made in 1964
@iannGT2 i believe that the DeLorean had an engine that was mounted behind the rear axel, but you're right, there are few mainstream cars that are rear engine.

@207053 It's all about saving weight.Ad this car is made for the track.If you want a car with all the stuff, but still gives out the same power it's the 911 turbo.This is not perfect for road driving but its perfect for the track.The 911 Turbo is Good at road driving and will still give you the times(close but not the same) you'll get from this.
996 shape is oddly beautiful
I used to hate the 996, but it has grown on me lately. Even the weird headlights.

Especially the Zonda...as a Porsche fanboy, it hurts me to say it; but I'd rather have a Zonda S. I saw one 14 years ago, I haven't washed my eyes since.
Very much a practical decision. But if it were up to me, and I had the money I would go for the Pagani.

All Hammond's Porsche reviews are cool, coz he's biased.
Old videos are being uploaded so people who haven't previously seen these can watch them. Yeah we know their old but some of these episodes have entertainment value beyond just the reviews. Also if I'm not mistaken the crew just did review the new GT3 RS recently as par of their upcoming shows. They were in NY with a 458 and a white GT3 RS.
@mattblack77nz this is the old one mate. This a is an old clip. the 997 (this one) isnt for sell anymore.
@JL3Wind 2.9 is quite impressive although with that time achieved by reviewers I think that they would have called it closer to 3.2 or 3 flat for their 0-60. But I'm not in charge of that. I did mean the 928 because there was something said to the effect that if the engine isn't out back it’s not a Porsche. So I threw up the 928 and I believe the 944 was also a FR V8 Porsche. It may have less power but their also lighter than a Mustang 10 years notwithstanding.
@XcitedMungoMan2010 This car was made around 2003-2004. GT2 RS was not made yet I think. Plus did you realize that this was the 996 model. Not the 997 model.

*A stock exhaust GT3 996 sounds like a VACUUM CLEANER with a hamster stuck in it.*
It needs longtube equal-length headers and side muffler deletes at the very least in order to give it that flat-6 high-pitch wail transition in the upper RPMs that is characteristic of the newer GT3 cars.
Santa is going to drive this Porsche, he is going to stop and say "Man, this is yours" xD I wish that happen

@eins2001 you had better hope so. And the word would be faster, and if I may cheaper as well, leaving room for suspension upgrades and still being cheaper. I still like Porsche though how they manage to wring out more power out of them boxter engines every year is impressive.

Seems to be a great car. Although it's bad that the car isn't waterproof so normally, when I'm driving in the river bed, the car fills up quite fast.
That was my favorite car since I was 5 years old. (16 Now).
