you mentioned github as an alternative service for these kinda websites - personally i'd also suggest codeberg! it's more of a FOSS-friendly alternative to github since, reminder: microsoft owns github. there's been a small movement dedicated to stop using github in favor for more actually open-ended services. they have their own static site service (codeberg pages) and allow bringing everything from a github repository onto a codeberg repository. you could even make it so the same repo is on both services incase one goes under! that, and github uses the IO domain for its github pages sites, but you have to remember that the IO domain is actually supposed to be entirely wiped off of the internet in a few years (in other words they're killing it off), which means every github pages site that doesn't use a custom non-IO domain will actually just stop working in a few years (so a LOT of link rot). so i've always preferred codeberg in that case

I'm so tired of the constant whining about how good the internet used to be and how crappy it is now, and I'm so happy that finally someone is spreading the word about how to start doing at least something. I might even try some of the sources that are listed. +the song is really cute :) I also think it would be worth mentioning the existence of many forums. It wasn't always this way. Websites from 20 years ago varied between adorable Geocities pages to information overload newsletter sites to metalheart-ish works of art like this: th-cam.com/video/N-2sKZjawq4/w-d-xo.html . I wanna bring THAT back.
i love how when you mentioned finding inspiration i was like "Oooh i like the deltarune website stuff" and then you immediately mentioned spamton sweepstakes XD
1:35 Jokes on you, I have been locked in to the gameplay. >:) I hardly have much distractions! Though yeah it's a good video, Neocities was a great start for me personally and getting premium was also great to get me into my own Domain. Which now I have moved on from Neocities and setup my own Webserver through a VPS service that was like 50 cents more but gives me 400gb of SSD storage instead of 50 GB that neocities had. Hell, it's actually kickstarting me to get into developing web stuff but in that classic internet way.
oh my god.. this was genuinely so enlightening, the modern internet is so depressing and i've dreamed of old style communities like this, but i never thought such innocence was still untouched.. thank you so much, your creativity is profound as well, please keep doing you. thank you ❤❤
At the very least, youtube isin't completely soulless. The fact that i found this video in my recommendations at all tells us that there's still some hope left, but alas, you still make a good point.

"very focused on free privacy-focused internet, full of artists and programmers, everyone who's probably pro piracy, and half the people making these websites probably use linux." Why did you call me out like that :sob:
I've been meaning to make a Neocities site, and this really makes me want to finally get on that lol. Also your OC is super cute, and the animation is neat. Great video!
we like thinking of it as tho sites are like gardens! it might seem daunting to try, or like u have no idea what it would even mean to try "making a garden," but u can slowly try planting things and teaching urself how to grow stuff a little bit at a time. maybe sometimes u visit someone else's garden and get some seeds from their plants, or vice versa. as u learn, u end up making a garden, and it's uniquely yours, arranged how u want and growing whatever plants u thought would be neat! and ppl can come see ur garden and tell that u put a lot of care into it! and then going by this logic squarespace is giant acres-wide monoculture soybean fields
Hey thanks, really good video! Ive been wondering for a while now, if there were any GOOD websites out there. I'm so tired of corporate websites. I'm going to look into everything you mentioned/suggested, I'll even try to make my own website, why not :) (Also, I love the song animation lol)
The problem is, though that people posting stuff online would prefer it to get seen, cause otherwise they wouldn't be posting it. And if you want it to get seen, you go where people are(Twitter, TH-cam, TikTok, etc.) Just like this video, which isn't hosted on your neocities page. This creates a feedback loop that allows large social networks retain their users.
wow this video is amazing, it has lore and everything!!! really convinces me to try making a website and i already have a cool idea after thinking about it (no idea if itd be optimised or not lol) and maybe ill actually get round to it instead of procrastinating like everything else i do thats creative :3 anyway you deserve my sub 🙏

i did not know i needed me some green hoodie cat but now i need more.
im so glad people are finally talking about neocities
EDIT: 14:55 I HAVE THAT EXACT WHEATLY KEYCHAIN BUT THE KEYCHAIN BIT BROKE OFF LOL
1:12 Oh hey it's the Xorg logo minus the swirl
Oh wow someone else sees it
Jesus this is a deep cut 💀
It wasn't always this way. Websites from 20 years ago varied between adorable Geocities pages to information overload newsletter sites to metalheart-ish works of art like this: th-cam.com/video/N-2sKZjawq4/w-d-xo.html . I wanna bring THAT back.
i love how when you mentioned finding inspiration i was like "Oooh i like the deltarune website stuff" and then you immediately mentioned spamton sweepstakes XD
I grew up on the 90s internet. It was definitely a lot more fun, and I'm so happy to see new generations trying to revive that feeling.
1:35
Jokes on you, I have been locked in to the gameplay. >:)
I hardly have much distractions!
Hell, it's actually kickstarting me to get into developing web stuff but in that classic internet way.
oh my god.. this was genuinely so enlightening, the modern internet is so depressing and i've dreamed of old style communities like this, but i never thought such innocence was still untouched.. thank you so much, your creativity is profound as well, please keep doing you. thank you ❤❤
4:29 counter point, I don’t wanna buy an entire course for my website that probably won’t get any traction.
Based
The idea isn't to buy an entire course, but to google "html tutorial" and get the basics in like a half-hour
Just Google it
counter point, you cant buy a course and instantly get lots of traction
I've been getting myself into petsites like flight rising and the like, they really capture the kind of community the old web fostered
At the very least, youtube isin't completely soulless. The fact that i found this video in my recommendations at all tells us that there's still some hope left, but alas, you still make a good point.
14:44 Yeah that -totally- happened to my old computer too, turns out they don't like it when you're propelled out of them at a high speed. Who knew! You'd think HARDware would be more durable than that but whatever. 🙄
15:46 RAAAAAHHHH I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT THE VID IS NOT GOOD RAAAHHHHH
"very focused on free privacy-focused internet, full of artists and programmers, everyone who's probably pro piracy, and half the people making these websites probably use linux." Why did you call me out like that :sob:
It was inevitable.
I've been meaning to make a Neocities site, and this really makes me want to finally get on that lol. Also your OC is super cute, and the animation is neat. Great video!
wow thank you!! i used neocities in the past but i kinda forgot about it lmao you put me back on the neocities grind!!
why do you only have 3,99k subscribers wth? most underrated channel i saw this year
bro.... this is so underrated!!!! what the hell!!!!
6:35 HOLY MENTAL FLASHBANG, I USED TO USE SCRATCH SOO MUCH AS A SOCIAL MEDIA LMAOO
thanks for inspiring me pal, i'm in the tutorial of the neocities website, i hope i get the hang of it and start enjoying making my website
I've been on both neocities and spacehey for a little more than a year. Really neat stuff!
Thanks for showing up on my timeline when I needed you! Subscribed for the unique style, omw to neocities!
we like thinking of it as tho sites are like gardens! it might seem daunting to try, or like u have no idea what it would even mean to try "making a garden," but u can slowly try planting things and teaching urself how to grow stuff a little bit at a time. maybe sometimes u visit someone else's garden and get some seeds from their plants, or vice versa. as u learn, u end up making a garden, and it's uniquely yours, arranged how u want and growing whatever plants u thought would be neat! and ppl can come see ur garden and tell that u put a lot of care into it!
and then going by this logic squarespace is giant acres-wide monoculture soybean fields
Hey thanks, really good video! Ive been wondering for a while now, if there were any GOOD websites out there. I'm so tired of corporate websites.
I'm going to look into everything you mentioned/suggested, I'll even try to make my own website, why not :)
(Also, I love the song animation lol)
I just thought about how they could've escaped an unending amounts of fees, which is sick I guess.
But this is literally the internet in the internet.
The problem is, though that people posting stuff online would prefer it to get seen, cause otherwise they wouldn't be posting it. And if you want it to get seen, you go where people are(Twitter, TH-cam, TikTok, etc.) Just like this video, which isn't hosted on your neocities page.
This creates a feedback loop that allows large social networks retain their users.
wow there's an insanely high amount of effort put into this, this is wonderful :)
Remind me to come back here when I'm not laying in bed doom scrolling on my phone instead of sleeping.
wow this video is amazing, it has lore and everything!!!
really convinces me to try making a website and i already have a cool idea after thinking about it (no idea if itd be optimised or not lol) and maybe ill actually get round to it instead of procrastinating like everything else i do thats creative :3
anyway you deserve my sub 🙏
i love that more ppl are talking about this kinda stuff !! thank you so much for sharing ((':
Whoh.. randomly came across this video and I’m blown away w your editing. This is so cool-
