Unfortunately on Monday evening (27/06/16), my fuel tank decided it didn't want to be attached to my car anymore whilst cornering at 100mph. I'm not sure what will come of the car now.
Thank you for sharing how much it costs to crash there. Just another reminder that things can go south, when moving at the limit. But the main thing is that you're fine. Everything else can be either fixed, or replaced.
Daniel As a retired rally driver I have suffered the depression and cost of putting cars into trees and down the sides of mountains and I know what a fuckfest it is to get your car back while being financially groped all the way. That was clearly a mechanical issue - nothing to do with your driving at all. So it looks like you had the straps fail on the tank. In rally world we are used to the effects of vibration and general weakening of stuff so we replace critical parts regularly. IN rally world we have extra straps on fuel tanks because of the jumps and higher vibration and if you have the money you have more comprehensive underbody protection. Bizarre stuff happens. I had the back snap out in FWD at 136 kph (on board telemetry) on a narrow but dead straight dirt road at night with big drops on side of mountain. What happened to you reminded me of my experience. Caught it (because it was not as catastrophic as what you went through) and when we finished rally we found that top hat mountings on rear had become elliptical hence massive alignment variation at end of suspension. Only took a bit of undulation to throw the car wildly out of line at 136 kph. I have had lower front control arm mounting bolts get finger loose after 30 km of fast dirt circuit training (even though they were torqued ok at the start) and that has been enough to put the car around under brakes at speed. This is why everything gets spanner checked at a rally service., In tarmac land the effects of vibration can take much longer to emerge but they are still there and it can catch you out. Hope you get back on the track and put it behind you but think about the vibration/fatigue issue for future maintenance regimes. Cheers Peter
at that force it goes nearly automatic. I dont know but when i oversteer my car, countersteer immadiatly. Dont know if i am doing it or the car itself somehow.
Go on a track day and if you crash you dont have to pay for track closure. Also if you go on a track day you dont have to pay for damaged barriers if you know your legal stuff...
Yeah no place I've gone charges you for closure or barriers. That's like a restaurant charging a diner or waitress if a plate breaks. They have shifted their risk that they enter into onto the customers. Effing dodgy.

Crashing at The Ring can have many causes, but driving with Harry's Laptimer in your field of view certainly raises the stakes. I decided to go without a year ago after some big moments. Lap time stress is gone. The fun factor stayed. Sorry for your loss. I've found out the hard way a big moment at The Ring is at best expensive. Luckily no hospital came in to play for you. Cheers. Scribbler dangoff it's such a fast track and finding the limit on the fast corners is for maybe a handful of drivers in the world, I'd say 99.9% of drivers who goes out on track are way off the limit of the car

Props to you for maintaing control and moving car off to a safe place. Most drivers would panic and leave the car without first thinking other cars will be coming from behind at around the same speeds.
Sorry to see this happen to you Daniel. I was there the day it happened with my brother and my nephew, going around the track in a danish silver Toyota Avensis SW. Was so sad to see the Integra parked to the side with missing front parts. Good to know it wasn't driver error and nothing happened to you.

Crashing at the ring's only cheap for us Germans since our insurance covers all the damage done to other cars and the track. You're lucky you didn't hit the other car as that would've been an even bigger bill.
Are u sure about that? I heard some german insurance has exceptions for Germany. I've been trying to figure it out for a while (I live in Germany), but my German is still terrible and when I call the insurance company... well... let's say it's always a funny conversation :D
Yes, by German law the Nordschleife counts as a public toll road during the Tourist laps, so insurance companies can't exclude it from the basic insurance which pays for damages done by your car... Comprehensive insurance however won't pay the damages on your car though, they can exclude the Ring or they'll find a reason why they won't have to pay...at least afaik.
I'm just curious,, but if you're from an entirely different country (Ie not Europe) what is the best insurance to use for the ring that would cover you for most if not all things there?
Really bad luck. Exceptionally calm and measured response to the spin and the aftermath. It takes a great deal of presence of mind to keep going with a sensible commentary and take relevant footage and most importantly it's very instructive for everyone who drives the Nordschleife, particularly from the UK.

Great report on your incident ! I had a major breakdown ( the car not me) by Hoe Acht once and had the bongard recovery experience. Luckily my insurance breakdown service payed for the car to be returned home to a garage in Liverpool for repair and for my return with Lufthansa .

The Touristenfahrten (TF) Sessions are classed as the public toll road, meaning you have liability for causing damage to the track, and others. Believe it or not, German traffic laws apply, and you may be prosecuted, for example. Trackdays at the Ring are different and the only liability you have is for barrier repair. Normal german car insurance would cover people to do Tourist days, UK insurance doesn't though.
Really sorry to see this Daniel you didn't deserve this by your driving very unfortunate the circumstances to how it happened. Also that Megan driver who said you were going too quick is owed some Karma. Not like kicking a man when he's down? Chin up great video too got a new subscriber :)

Good job Michaela (Gasthaus Fuchsrohre - highly recommended) offered you that Garage - I'm sure Bonrath's dayrate for storage isn't cheap. Anyhow, been there seen it & done it at the Ring over the years and the barriers are probably the most expensive (but well maintained) in Europe! But them's the risks, at least you walked away :-)

Actually, just about all tracks will bill you if you take out a barrier. It's part of the fine print you sign at a track day. I'm not sure about closing the track, as I've never seen that happen. It would have to be a pretty bad wreck to red flag a whole day.
How did the crash even happen didn’t look like you were going fast enough to oversteer that bad. Was it from slamming brakes on then going straight into turn without letting weight settle?

In the video you said they might have to replace the barrier and if they have to close the track it would be tens of thousands. Does insurance cover this or is this out of pocket with a loan or cash?

He was wondering that there is no handhold. It's different from the GB; there you have to hold the handhold all the time when you get petrol. But isn't this an invention to save the environment from leaking gas ?
He's just on about the fuel pumps. You can snick the filler handle on open and leave the pump running, thus not have to stand there holding it. This used to be possible on some or all of the pumps in the UK until - guessing - 2001.
Ouch, you took that well, possibly some of it shock! I had an incident at Oulton park in a williams clio. Had insurance. Never got paid out cos I didn't follow the instructions and get a marshal to document the crash... I asumed I wouldn't crash and wasn't prepared. No-one holds your hand in motorsport, you have to be grown up - as you demonstrated. As you mentioned in another comment, they don't withold the info about paying for damages, but you have to read up on the rules!
Good video mate, about time someone did a video of what happens when things go wrong at the Ring, I still think it a ripp off what they charge people when you crash at this place, the money people pay to get on the track could easily cover any damage, and should. Hope you get the car back on the road soon.
It nearly went bankrupt because of bad management and poor business deals, just look at the stupid fun park they built next to the track that no one wanted, or went too. There are bluechip motor compainys who are swimming in money and pay big money to use this track for testing. Trust me on this, there are people out there making allot of money off this place, and there mugging the real users right off.
the corner where you spun has a slight but noticeable bump in it, midcorner. When going over it at speed it can catch you out, specially when it's wet.

How did you recover the car black to the UK? What was the total bill for the crash. £3K?
We went back with a trailer for it. I can't remember the exact costs but yeah, something like that.

The same happened to my fiat coupe, luckily it just snapped in the night when it was parked on the drive

The Ring has it's own emergency-number. The number is handed out to every visitor.
you must call for help, there are signs put out there in every corner showing the emergency number. but they would show up eventually either way...

Anyhow, been there seen it & done it at the Ring over the years and the barriers are probably the most expensive (but well maintained) in Europe! But them's the risks, at least you walked away :-)

Actually, just about all tracks will bill you if you take out a barrier. It's part of the fine print you sign at a track day. I'm not sure about closing the track, as I've never seen that happen. It would have to be a pretty bad wreck to red flag a whole day.

How did the crash even happen didn’t look like you were going fast enough to oversteer that bad. Was it from slamming brakes on then going straight into turn without letting weight settle?

We all watch videos as crashes are just something to watch but all the effort to get back to normal after all the stuff has been paid and done is massive and left unseen.
In the video you said they might have to replace the barrier and if they have to close the track it would be tens of thousands. Does insurance cover this or is this out of pocket with a loan or cash?
Can't you get insurance to cover you for those kinds of costs at the ring?

He was wondering that there is no handhold. It's different from the GB; there you have to hold the handhold all the time when you get petrol. But isn't this an invention to save the environment from leaking gas ?
He's just on about the fuel pumps. You can snick the filler handle on open and leave the pump running, thus not have to stand there holding it. This used to be possible on some or all of the pumps in the UK until - guessing - 2001.
Ouch, you took that well, possibly some of it shock! I had an incident at Oulton park in a williams clio. Had insurance. Never got paid out cos I didn't follow the instructions and get a marshal to document the crash... I asumed I wouldn't crash and wasn't prepared. No-one holds your hand in motorsport, you have to be grown up - as you demonstrated. As you mentioned in another comment, they don't withold the info about paying for damages, but you have to read up on the rules!

Good video mate, about time someone did a video of what happens when things go wrong at the Ring, I still think it a ripp off what they charge people when you crash at this place, the money people pay to get on the track could easily cover any damage, and should. Hope you get the car back on the road soon.

It nearly went bankrupt because of bad management and poor business deals, just look at the stupid fun park they built next to the track that no one wanted, or went too. There are bluechip motor compainys who are swimming in money and pay big money to use this track for testing. Trust me on this, there are people out there making allot of money off this place, and there mugging the real users right off.
the corner where you spun has a slight but noticeable bump in it, midcorner. When going over it at speed it can catch you out, specially when it's wet.
