Cool game, I just beat this and went all the way thru it at my local arcade that has a lot of vintage arcade cabinets, the game was set on free play so it didn't cost me $200 in quarters to win lol

Holy shit, that was amazing! At first, I was wondering WTF you were thinking farmer the black wizard in level 7. But I never knew that the salamanders in level 22 dropped fairy eggs! That makes up for the health loss. Hell of a find there.
Never knew that killing Moai by hitting the gem in the back of their head yielded gold coins either. Hell of a performance in level 47 as well.
You've got appreciate how Capcom knew EXACTLY what levels were best to farm and setup food drops to allow you to recoup the health lost from using thunderstorm to spawn coins in those stages. Such a well-designed game.

BTW what version are you playing? I was just playing the US one yesterday and got about 11.5 million total by the time I killed Drokmar on a legit run with default settings.... but I also noticed that when you used the diamond ring on a thief on floor 9 he dropped lobster??? I experimented a LOT with cheats on to give myself unlimited rings, unlimited time, etc a while back.... and not once EVER did I see a thief drop anything other than double score pendants, shields, toadstools and another ring. While lizardmen only dropped small food items, scissors, a bell and rarely a sapphire. I literally tested this about 100 times for each of them.

Prisoners drop sets change if your life is below 1 life bar. Thieves drop food if you're under 1 bar and a chance to drop a blue crystal. Big man will always drop food under 1 life. Wizard has a higher chance to drop a crystal when under 1 life bar.
I've honestly never heard that before... anywhere. Very interesting. Do you remember your source or know where I can get more details on what prisoners drop what items exactly in more detail?

play this game in arcade, was very addicted...the music...the story. Im searching on youtube and i noticed that NO ONE, ABSOLUTLY NO ONE plays this game from start to finish using ALL the partners. I used to play this way: At the beginning i pick up the Amazon, from floor 0 to 7, because that is the perfect section of the entire game where the Amazon is usefull,
very easy to reach level 8. Then in the floor 7 i change for the Ninja because in this sector of the game is nedded a partner a little more "defensive", could reach level 6 minimum. Then in the floor 11 i change for the Mage. Its perfect for the Chimera boss, combined with the potion. Then in the floor 15 i change for the less used partner of all, the Priest. The Priest
in this section of the game fit perfectly, could reach level 6 minimum. Also, if you have the luck to reach at least level 7 and the little green dragons in the floor 19 gives you the scroll, then the next floor where theres only mummies is a piece of cake for the
mighty Priest because he can destroy them with only one orb per
mummy and, in combination with the scroll (if you have the luck to get one in the previous floor) you can get a lot of food. Thats the perfect section of the game for the Priest. Then, in the same floor of the mummies, i change for the Thief. He fit perfectly for the next floor because you never know where is the traps. Then in the previous floor of the serpents boss i change for the Big Man. He fit perfectly for that boss because nobody knows that is axe is very poweful against the serpents, in combination with the gauntlet. You can kill them in four or five hits. Then in the second half of the game i change for the Knight. He is very easy to reach level 8 if you take the alternate floors. I always take the alternate floors, its more difficult. Then in the previous floor for the battle against the double headed dragon i change for the Lizard Man. Perfect for combine with the gauntlet for that boss. And then, in the last section of the game, i use the two "extremes" characters...the most defensive again, the Ninja, and for the last floors the most powerful again, the
Mage. Thats is how i used to play this wonderful game, using all the partners. Thats make the game more difficult to play and much more excitting! Using all the game the Lizard Man (wich in my opinion
is TOO MUCH powerful) is a little bored because the game is much more "easy". Same for the Thief or Knight.
PS: My personal record is, i still remember it, 15927885. I know...no way to prove it...but it is!
Hello Diego. Thank you for your comment. Using all of the partners sounds fun. However I only use the lizardman because I played for score. Using the lizardman allows me to collect the scissors without losing my partner. I agree the Lizardman is strong, but when playing for score I don't care about the difficulty, just maximizing my score. I'm glad you enjoy the game as much as I do and that's a great personal record. Outstanding score.
Pasky Hello...yes, me too...when i used to play "for score" i used to stay all the game with the Lizard Man, just like you...ha ha.
In fact i remember that i liked to play "two ways". One way, using all partners, in what i called "the perfect game"; using all the potential of the game (partners, items, etc). And the other way was play just for score...not necessary throug a strategy like the other way...just the score...no matter whats its "implied" (i dont know the word, sorry for my english). In the case of the first way of playing i go throug the two secrets paths; was more challenging. In the case of the second way of playing (just for score) i take the "normal path", just like you, because there are the wizards (lots and lots of coins, you know)...and i use and stay with the...Lizard Man, he he he...
I still remember that night...i have a little luck...collect various 80000 points diamonds from the Mages...doubled it with the pendant...and i will never forget that final score...15.927.885
Anyways...Magic Sword was a game that i used to play with mind,
soul and heart, bro...i was in love with the characters, story, music...its a pitty that nobody (excepts you) plays the game with heart and soul...everyone change partners every minute, picks and change every second the magic items...they have no idea for what purpose are each one...nobody plays "strategicaly" (if you understand me)...
Also, i remember that my wish back in those times was to find another player to play the game in cooperative...but i never find one worth of it...all the players was "with no soul or heart"...

I like your final score (I guess you did play almost all the floors, and those strats with the lizardman, and some tips with the double score item), when I played that game some years ago I also had in mind to get high score, of course I didn't get the same score as you, but pretty good for me. I usually play this game in classic arcade game in videogame locals, and especially with emulators. Now I am into speedrunning this game, and I had success to finish it in 18 minutes with 10 seconds, 1 Credit Coin, Deathless, in Normal Beginning category, soon I will try Normal 33, starting from that floor. Yes, there's a 25% chance to get a ring drop from the wizard on floor 30. And a 12.5% chance the thief drops a pendant on floor 30 from the ring, .30 * .125 = 3.75% chance for a floor 30 pendant. Floor 45 pendant is even ridiculously harder as there is a 12.5% chance for a ring on floor 42, 43 and a pendant on 44 that you can take to 45 or rings on 42,43,44, and get the pendant on 45. Extremely hard to get.

It was done on a real arcade board, so save states aren't even possible.

Pasky its because it looks so hard, this is one of the cheapest arcades that i ever saw: you almost have no life bar and it keeps decresing every second of playtime, so little food and a insane amount of enemies per screen. you must have played this game a thousand times until you ended up good at it. Pretty impressive!
It's a difficult game, but it's incredibly fair as long as you understand the mechanics, a fairy comes out every 300K points until 900K, then it's every 400K points to give you life, so playing for score is encouraged in this game to succeed. I usually stream these live on my twitch page (www.twitch.tv/pasky) and almost all my runs are done on real arcade hardware. I always put in the description what was used to play the game (hardware, MAME, etc...)

Hello. I'm well aware of the Japanese world record of 18 million. I've never claimed any recognition with this run other than it's a super play. When I was grinding this out I had set a goal for myself of 14M and reached it. I know the necessary tricks to get a higher score and how the record was attained (floor 30 pendant, floor 45 pendant and insanely good health luck drops) but I don't have the time or desire to grind it out. I'm very happy with my personal best and still play this from time to time for score. Thanks for watching.
