Network Admin Life - Introduction

  • Hello anyone!
    Welcome to my new channel! I'll be talking about what it's really like to be a network administrator and also documenting my journey into retirement.
    There's not going to be anything fancy about this channel, no fancy graphics, intros or outros, no Amazon affiliate links, no special content for Patreon subscribers. Just a regular guy talking about regular stuff. We'll talk tech, problems, politics, and most definitely religion. It's just really my take on work and life.
    Be civil in your comments. Uncivil comments will be deleted without remorse. I decide what is civil. Slightly ruthless I know but hey, it is my channel after all.

    Well I know it was the Lord that had me watch your video brother! I am a 62 year old security guard at Martin Army Hospital at Fort Benning, GA. I am in grad school to get a degree in Information Systems Management. I took 2 courses so far and did very well. I plan on taking Googles' IT Professional Certification program later this month. After retiring from the Army and the local police dept, I really wanted to get back into something more technical and analytical. So the Lord led me to information technology in Oct 2019! So, I know that I am on the right track and watching your video brought a tear to my eyes because of Gods' confirmation on His choice for me; even at my age! Never too old for God! So thank you for your ministry in technology!

      Each wire corresponds to a device on the "wired" network. We have thousands of devices on our network where I work. This includes the wireless access points which can have 30 or 40 wireless clients attached to them. Luckily you don't have to know what each wire does all the time. Label the ports and label the wires and then it's easy to figure out from there. Best of luck on your decision!

      You can do it! Any job can seem difficult or even impossible... until you actually do it and make it possible. Just remember, the Internet is your library. You will not run into a problem that no one has ever seen before. 9 times out of 10 someone has already found and solved the problem. You just have to look for that solution. God bless!

    im 18 , (&) have a job as a computer technician for a school district, where i basically fix everything in the district technology wise " printer jam " " computer has a virus " " shorcut wont load webpage. Although the pay is definitely amazing for the job. it seems very unprofessional. There is literally 2 people in the whole IT Department. Me ( who runs to 4 different schools fixing things ) Director which has Technology issues at the main office. Honestly, there is hardly any tickets. Some days i have to look for work. I hate that bc i feel like that's slowing me down. I love learning (&) it just seems slower ig bc some days there arent even any tickets. Im currently in college for computer networking which is taught using (CiscoNetAcad) so i basically only know cisco equipment . . I absolutely love the networking side of things ... Configuring cisco switches (&) routers is very interesting! Just building the network and configuring everything (&) we done actual math when subnetting not using a sundt calculator.. (&) seeing the complete project work / communicate is very satisfying. Im sure there is very much more to networking A WHOLE LOT! but that is what caught my eye. This August will be a year ive been at my job a year (&) I graduate college next year (May 2022). I just like staying busy (&) always want to be a contribue to something big. So I just feel like I have to move on to get the knowledge that I want to learn. Mississippi is horrible for opportunities. I want to learn more about networking after this job .. im not sure if I should go for helpdesk or what path tp really take to get where ii want to be ( in the network engineering part of things ) i know thats going to be a journey while working on certs as well. I just need an insight on after this job. Im honestly not learning at the job as i may have stated earlier. ii was told by a cisco professional to try to get a networking support/technician job in a NOC.

    Definitely different times... I wish companies would still let you learn on the job like how you got handed a book on Pascal instead of looking for candidates with already 3+ years of 'professional' experience and not ignore any academic or personal project experience. Lockheed nowadays wants years of experience in too many things for an 'entry' role (i.e. a role for someone with

    • @NetworkAdminLife
      @NetworkAdminLife  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I still think Lockheed pulled a bait and switch on me. I was hired as an electronic technician, for which I was well qualified. Telling me to learn programming on the job was not what I was prepared for and so was never really all that good at it. But I agree, when companies hire, they are looking to replace the person who left, completely ignoring how much time that person spent on the job learning how to do the job. I'll call it acquired qualifications. That person didn't have those skills when he was hired in. God bless!
