40g optics are basically 4 10g links on the same fiber using wdm (it uses four different wavelengths of light)
Now that's something I didn't know. Thanks for that. God bless!
@ u too, merry Christmas
You too!
Merry Christmas @pfilip2346!
When I work in IT as a Network Admin this was my fav time of the year because I got a ton done without any end users needing help or having meetings. It was a time to finish up on server documents or maintenance or upgrading firmware on routers switches and firewalls. Usually I do these things after hours on a Tuesday but during the month of Dec its something I can do during the day. I use to blast music and wear shorts and a t-shirt and do my task without any issues. Awesome time!!
All of that is true. Merry Christmas @WOPR_PC!
Merry Christmas! Thank you for making these videos, really enjoyed them.
Thank you for that. Merry Christmas @corstian_!
During the link flapping test. the module itself (QSFP/SFP) is turned down or the link only is turned down? can you explain?
When the switch detects a lot of transitions on the port UP DOWN UP DOWN, it will disable the interface. So the port the SFP+ module is plugged into is disabled by the switch. Is that more clear?
Why on earth would anyone be negative about your methods. We both work the old school way, one step at a time. You will never hear anything negative from me my friend.
I think my mentioning the name of Jesus irk this person more than my methods. Or possibly he can't get a job as a network admin and doesn't understand why. Either way he just needs prayer. God bless and Merry Christmas!
I appreciate your honesty of the Lord. No problem for me.
Thanks for taking us through your process on this. I've been in the computer biz for many decades and now I'm becoming a network admin. I learn a lot from someone else's challenges. I know the pressure of being the only one to handle certain types of problems. We got rid of Dell and moved to another networking vendor. I'm having some SNMP V3 and other problems of my own. 🙃 My network is nothing compared to yours but still has its challenges.
Glad it was helpful. Each network has its own "personality" if you will. Its own challenges and upsides. We all have to adapt to whatever network we're managing. God bless and Merry Christmas!
dont always need root cause :) you are a network admin
Yeah, I kind of chuckle at the people who demand root causes. Especially when they are in management. "Okay, even if I am able to find the root cause of a given failure, are you going to be able to understand it?" Just because you know what causes something doesn't mean you can prevent it in the future. Like this QSFP failure, how would I prevent that in the future? So yeah, you have to decide what the best use of your time is. So my thing is, it's fixed; I'm moving on. God bless and Merry Christmas!
I appreciate your insight. I battle very similar things at work and the answer isn't always obvious. Kudos to you for finding the solution to the problem!
It certainly can be a battle. Sometimes the solution is obvious and sometimes you back into it like in this case. As long as it's solved then I'm good. God bless and Merry Christmas!
can't count how many times a base update (bios, etc; below the networking layer) have quelled the seemingly random network issues and failures that crop up from time to time within the network..... just say~n, check the levels between the core switches and even if they're the same, update them anyway.......
I am way behind on core switch upgrades. Going to get to that in the new year. God bless!
Great job pinpointing that issue. Working solo in healthcare is no easy feat, and you have my utmost respect for managing it all on your own. Your dedication and expertise truly stand out. Keep up the amazing work.
Extreme Networks was a big help as well. Thanks for watching and God bless!
Nice to have this one solved right before Christmas. It was probably that no one reported issues other than the SNMP traffic droping that set you off on in the wrong direction. Regarding the fiber cleaning, you might want to get a digital fiber microscope. They're quite pricy which is why I don't have one. But for the other link flap issue you have it might be worth renting or having an installer with you that has one his/her toolkit.
Our engineering team probably has one. I've never really asked. I'm going to try to work on this issue with my new protege to give him some experience messing about with fiber. God bless!
It's a 40G LR4 optic, so 40G is split into 4x 10G lanes. Each lane is a separate wavelength over the same physical fibre. I've never seen an optic fail like that before, but then again, I haven't been computer networking many years. I'm also a team of one network (and DC) engineer some small insignificant issues are just way down the list to spend time looking into to fix.
Thanks for the info! Even the Extreme Networks tech on the phone couldn't explain what the TX1-4 and RX1-4 meant. They are horrendously expensive (in my book) and that's probably why they are under maintenance along with the rest of the switch hardware. They sent me a replacement for free. God bless!
Great Job. You were much nicer in responding to the comment about you skills as a Network Admin than a person like my self (From New York City) would have been 😉 As usual, God Bless You.
That's why this country needs New Yawkahs. God bless!
@@NetworkAdminLife Well, I probably wouldn't go 'That' far, although we can come in handy when dealing with - you know.
New Yorkers are like that one relative that always slaps you on the back too hard and plays too rough but you definitely want them around when you're being bullied. That one relative that says "Hey-o, oh-ay, you mess wit one of us you mess wit all of us."
@@NetworkAdminLife Very close
God is in charge. Not me. To God goes the glory. Absolutely love that. Have a safe and healthy holiday and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
which god?
Thanks for that. What else could I possibly say? God bless!
The living God.
Problem solved, it seems. Good job!
So it seems. I'll check again on Monday as usual and if there are no further issues, then weird as the fix was, it is indeed fixed.
The guy is it a Cisco QSFP(40 gigs)? Not cheap at all!
This one is from Extreme Networks and no, not cheap at all. To my surprise it is covered under our yearly hardware maintenance contract. They are just that expensive! God bless!
Good to hear that you have it figured out.
Yes! Thank you! God bless!
Merry Christmas and thank you for the videos, stay safe
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you as well! God bless!
You're great!
I appreciate the sentiment. God bless!
Great content.

I definitely didn't do my homework on this one. Meh, it happens. God bless!
Could I volunteer to be your shadow one day? 🙏I believe it will be a blessed, and a wonderful learning experience being there with you.
Unfortunately we have many regulations as far as visitors in the hospital. But this is exactly why I make these videos. Just not able to show everything though. God bless!
@NetworkAdminLife Thanks for the info. IT Networking is soo vast it's amazing. The more I learn is 1 step closer to that goal. Your Videos of you doing your Networking job are definitely inspirational 👍🏾
I would never hire anybody that “does not really know” o “not sure how this works”!!! BTW: Cross connects do not exist anymore as the ports can automatically flip the Tx and Rx pins! But this is what you get for getting good enough people that have an idea but can never be a truer expert as they obviously don’t have that drive or pride!
And yet, I have this job and you don't. Huh. Go figure. God bless!
Hello, and blessings to you and yours. I was offered an IT Tech position (while working as a Passenger Service Agent at the Airport) and accepted the challenge. When we had to set up new counters, we needed the Airport Network admin to set up our connections. 😮 i was inspired by his work. I looked into Networking, found your videos and thought "This is the job I want to do 😊" Now I'm enjoying and learning from your Videos because I hope 🙏🏾 to have a job atmosphere like yours. Thanks again, and God Bless.
What a blessing from God! I'm glad you enjoy the videos. I make them to show what *I* do as a network admin. Your job could be very different. May God bless you in your new role! God bless!
@NetworkAdminLife Thank you, sir, for your blessings. When I saw a switch in action and applied the Ethernet cables to the assigned ports. I wanted to learn how to do that and more. Now I have a Cisco Router, and switch to train at home. Packet Tracer is my new gaming app 🤣 to learn
What OS are you using ?
That would be Linux Mint. Not sure of the exact version. It's been a couple of years so I probable need to update it. God bless!
Very informative review. Thanks and God Bless 🙏
Thanks for watching! God bless you as well.
Can you copy the entire backedup config file and paste it into the command line?
In this case I could not. If the switch had just died and we replaced it, I could just copy and paste the config in with no changes. However, we added another switch to the stack so all the port numbers change. So before where we would have port 1,2,3, etc, now we have port 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and also port 2:1, 2:2, 2:3 and so on. Easier to just copy and paste selectively and edit while doing so. It takes longer but less mess to clean up later. God bless!
I don't think you're part of the club until you've done something like this at least once :)
There's those that have and those that will. Absolutely. The club meets Thursday nights. Bring cookies. :-) God bless!
Been there and done that a few times in my IT career. It sucks but important thing is keep good notes on the configuration settings so it'll be matter of copying and pasting them in if you can't reload the backed up configuration file.
Absolutely. I keep a blank configuration template handy and we do back up configurations each night. It may have been faster to just remove the new switch unconfigure the old switch and then restore from backup. However, I just decided to forge ahead and complete the work we were trying to do. Luckily the impacted staff were very understanding and appreciative of the impromptu break we gave them. God bless!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it! God bless!
Great and informative video! What more wisdom and knowledge could you ask for? By the way I'm familiar with the Da Vinci surgical systems, my dad had a appendix surgery removal done by that exact same system, really impressive technology.
They are rolling the new one off the truck at the loading dock as I type this. Hoping for a hitless install. God bless!
Another great video!
Glad you enjoyed it! God bless!
Don’t beat yourself up to much over that. We’re all humans. God bless
True. And it was a good learning experience for my young protege, Tariq. God bless!
Did you record this from a different place and system? Different background and a Linux distro.
Recorded this one at home in my bedroom. Linux Mint is my distro of choice. Only because I can find an even simpler distro. Love Linux but I want it to just work, I don't want to mess around with it to make it work. It's my work laptop, dual boot. God bless!
