Vinnie teamed with Zildjian some years ago, and they came up with his A Customs, which sounded brilliant & breathy. Good video. Two priceless moments: - His explanation about the making of the china. - His explanation about naming the cymbal line. Thanks Paiste and Vinnie.
I work for Paiste and can promise you it is not about money. We do not pay artists to play our cymbals. Vinnie heard some cymbals and wanted to learn more. It was well over a year of hanging out and playing cymbals before any endorsement talk was happening. This is a move based on sound, and sound alone.
True. He told me, in my car back at his hotel in Bordeaux around 1995, that, without knowing it, he thought he was already searching the Paiste kind of sound. Because he treid our some Signatures in my drumshop where he came to visit as he was playing with Patitucci the nigt before. He said "I will come to see you, I keep your card". He did come !!! Saw him again around 2013 and I asked "do you remember in my car in Bordeaux after the Patitucci gig ?" He said "YES !!! Those Paiste was already in my head but I didn't know their product at all...Only their image. He is such a nice guy and a monster of course...
Awesome cymbals. Haven't purchased a Paiste cymbals that I didn't like. I've cracked a few over the years and need to replace them soon. Won't use anything else but these fine cymbals. Vinnie blows me away every time I see or hear a performance of his. Amazing drummer!!
I used to be. Not anymore. The Swiss and German companies seem to be far better for the types of cymbals I'm listening out for. That's not to say that I will never go back to Zildjian again. I had a 19" A-Zildjian Crash cymbal that I dearly loved, but my :manager" at the time sold it to someone who got burned in one of his Coke deals!!!! However, that is NOT why I switched companies. It was just an unfortunate coincidence at the time....

The quality of its equipment is undeniable, the sound is a matter of preference. I think this video shows his playing has changed. One of the prerogatives that musicians enjoy is being able to choose their own gear to suit THEIR sense of musical expression. Just like you wouldn't appreciate someone telling you what car to drive, what neighborhood to live in, or what color shirt you can wear, you don't get to tell Vinnie what cymbals he can use to create HIS music going forward, no matter how long he might have been using something else. I for one have always loved the 602's -I think it's the best sounding crash/ride ever.
Vinnie is one of my Favorite Drummers (Hands Down). But for some reason, I enjoyed his sound better when he was using Gretsch, and Zildjian. As a drummer, I know you use what makes you the happiest, and his style hasnt changed. And I use neither Gretsch, nor Zildjian (I'm a Yamaha, Meinl Man). Vinnie walk on Water too! I've been playing 50yrs & he is up there w/the greatest. He's as good as it gets. WAtched him play 1st time w/Jeff Beck @ a Famous English club was on Cable TV anyway wow he's 10++++! Thx Vinnie your big fan
Nice warm sounding cymbals. I prefer these to his Zildjian A customs, which sounded too glassy and shrill. I hear he's been using the other Paiste lines as wel, depending on the gig (Traditionals, Giant Beats, 2002's).
Also have you ever heard the 20" RUDE ride and 14" rude Hi-Hats? Those 2 are so versatile, that even though this line is designed for harder genres of music, I'd be so willing to play jazz, fusion, blues and so on with them. Especially the hats. God, they sound amazing.
PAISTE 602 LOVE YOU. adoro os pratos da PAISTE poriço virei fã da marca. Moro no Brasil e aqui são muitos caros mas mesmo assim tenho a linha 201 da PAISTE.🎵❤❤👏👏👏
Vinnie Colaiuta is THE authority on drums. And these Paiste cymbals sound terrific. Moreover, I think, that they sound drastically different from the Zidlian A Customs which were kind of Vinnie's signature sound while his Ludwig's mimick the Vinnie Gretsch sound fairly well. However, heading for new directions is always good to stay fresh and I like that VC is still hungry!
Paiste cymbals and gongs are simply the best. I've played all brands, and they out play any of the rest. Plus...they are just beautiful to look at! The hand craftsmanship and passion is evident in the more "professional" line up, but I don't think we're critiquing the student models in this forum...right?
I'm so glad he made a change from his A Customs..they were just so blagh..so sudden and glassy. It got tiresome so fast. These new cymbals have some depth, warmth, and dynamics. It really has added some wisdom to his cymbal playing!!!
I feel they can be ok but not for using them for every cymbal on your kit. That being said I always thought they sounded worse than everything in the A series.
Having him switch to Paiste cymbals is huge for them!! Paiste has always seemed like a distant third behind Zildjian and Sabian, but I think this is a big shot in the arm for Paiste.
Huh? Yeah no .. theyve never been a distant third to anything Sabian sits way behind paiste in market share, endorsement doesn't carry rhe weight it once did as MTV doesnt really exist anymore and priint ads arnt really relevant anymore either..
I just bought these today here in our local store lightly used for half the price. I got 20 ride and 18 crash, awesome cymbals! Next will be the HH and 16 crash!
Hi Tim, thanks for your explanation; you have to understand that a lot of people have no idea how these endorsement deals come about... I suppose that creates a lot of prejudice. I honestly thought it was a money thing.. Anyway, I like to compliment Paiste on these great cymbals. They do sound very good.
These cymbals are the people's cymbals... I don't see how you could be more wrong. They are more expensive than other brands cymbals of the same quality level.
+Bruno de Souza Lino i guess they are the people cymbals because they are quality accessible for everyone , even if quality have a price . i mean you pay and have a truly great sound . not the case for all brands( maybe a reason why he switch for paiste off zildbrain ) ...now , selling is selling. that thing at 2:48 is too much(for players)....
You are correct! Back in the 80's when I bought my 2002's I tried them out and end up getting a 505 med. ride. I loved it and it was way less expensive than a 2002 ride.
I am a proud Paiste endorser. I know for a fact money had nothing to do with this move! I completely understand (With drummers like Vinnie) how some of you who have followed and love the gear he played for all of those years could be upset. But If you really listen to what Vinnie is saying about the cymbals/company and the reason he made the move and looked into it for yourselves I really believe you would understand why he made the switch. My opinion "Consistency"&"Versatility" are the big ones
(Regardless of the fact I am a Sabain guy for a sec) When you find the right cymbals, it's a magical experience. It's like no other. As drummer Zoro says, you play cymbals more than your drums (in terms of ride and hi-hats), so you need a good foundation starting with cymbals, and the rest will fall into place!
Since "dropping his stick" on hearing the 602 ride Vinnie has got rid of all of his K Zildjian ride cymbals. And he threw his A Customs onto his driveway and drove over them and then reversed. Gillette. "The Best A Man Can Get". These are nice cymbals no doubt. But it's all bullshit.
I love the clarity of the ride. No matter how fast he plays it, you can hear every stroke and the tone of the China is exceptional. Most of them sound like gongs or trash can lids, this one sounds like a musical instrument.
I've owned a 18" modern essentials crash for about 3 years now, and its insanely versatile. Never gets in the way of the music.
I love the sound of these cymbals. I got the 22" ride (Modern Essentials) and I'm just blown away, love it! Thanks Vinnie and Paiste for a great Cymbal!

-RhythmSaint
Perfect cymbal series ever made. Formula 602 series is a great choice as the studio cymbals.
A BEAUTIFUL SOUND!
That China cymbal is the best China my ears have ever heard. So airy and breath and very little pang to it. I love it! : )
I love that low dark China!
Like the bit where he plays a jazz shuffle-Vinnie's got such great feel and hand/foot independence, not forgetting his great drum vocabulary...
That ride is fantastic.
Nice warm sounding cymbals. I prefer these to his Zildjian A customs, which sounded too glassy and shrill. I hear he's been using the other Paiste lines as wel, depending on the gig (Traditionals, Giant Beats, 2002's).
Traditionals mostly.
Wow! You were there? Seeing Vinnie do his thing?! Great!
Probably the best cymbo-mercial EVER... With your host, Vinnie Colaiuta!
Bad ass!!!!
PAISTE 602 LOVE YOU. adoro os pratos da PAISTE poriço virei fã da marca. Moro no Brasil e aqui são muitos caros mas mesmo assim tenho a linha 201 da PAISTE.🎵❤❤👏👏👏
Greatest drummer alive, probably one of the top 5 of all time.
I know ihm since long time and yesterday I saw ihm with Sting and Paul Simon and many other super good musicians. He is BRILLANT!
Vinnie Colaiuta = greatest drummer ever & my idol.
Great job producing the cymbals and the video.
Vinnie was looking for that particular glassy, bright and transparent sound at that time. I like to listen to him using the Paiste's more though.
yep. grew up on zildjian As in band, but decided the 16 med thin is too garbage can liddy w not enough musical tone. Paiste YES!
This is a great vid with a great story, I feel like I just watched a movie!
I came hear for that left hand...as per usual it never disappoints.
I just bought these today here in our local store lightly used for half the price. I got 20 ride and 18 crash, awesome cymbals! Next will be the HH and 16 crash!
Thank you and congrats! At which store did you purchase your cymbals?
+Paiste Cymbals Here in Canada, Alberta- Long & Mcquade.
VERY well made video of the Modern Essentials.
love vinnie and his cymbals..superb !
Awesome video, awesome playing, gorgeous cymbals...
Great audio and video quality !
These cymbals are the people's cymbals...
I don't see how you could be more wrong. They are more expensive than other brands cymbals of the same quality level.
Bruno de Souza Lino they are expensive in US, same thing as sabian, zildjian are expensive in Europe
Bruno de Souza Lino I agree, but what other cymbals have the same timbre as this one?
check the prices for the zildjians and sabians in europe
+Bruno de Souza Lino Amen Bro...
+Bruno de Souza Lino i guess they are the people cymbals because they are quality accessible for everyone , even if quality have a price . i mean you pay and have a truly great sound . not the case for all brands( maybe a reason why he switch for paiste off zildbrain )
...now , selling is selling. that thing at 2:48 is too much(for players)....
Im lovin the 8" splash
NEW VINNIE SOUND!!!! I ABS. LOVE IT!!!!!
Paiste are the best. They usually suck on their own, but when the band joins in, they come to life and shine with their hidden beauty
What a beauty-sounding kit
I love these and the 2002 line!
Also I just bought an old Paiste 505 medium ride from the 80s which sounds similar to the 2002s
You are correct! Back in the 80's when I bought my 2002's I tried them out and end up getting a 505 med. ride. I loved it and it was way less expensive than a 2002 ride.
i have a hi hat signature precision sound edge and Vinnie he is absolutely right, they are fantastic cymbals
I'm lovin the 8" splash in this line
(Regardless of the fact I am a Sabain guy for a sec)
When you find the right cymbals, it's a magical experience.
Still, to this day, love that 5x14 Hammered Brass Snare! Just killer!
Incredible . Is that the 22" Ride in this demonstration that he was discovering at the factory ? ....dropping the Stick !?
