I enjoy this about a 100 times more than those drumsolo's that are "look at me how I can play 16th triplets really fast and complex, even though the structure is completely gone and I play 80% fills and 15% rhythm".
Love this stuff much more, any time of the day!!
Ricks self deprecating humor makes him even more awesome. He’s one of the greatest studio players in the history of drumming yet he’s humble AF.
I'll always love Rick for his drumming on Steely Dan' Peg song.
OMG , I FOUND THE SAMPLE THAT HUDSON MUSIC USES ON MOSTLY ALL THEIR DRUM VIDEOS AT THE BEGINNING !!! @ 0:55 ! YAYAYY LOL
I KNOW! I thought it sounded familiar!
I was so shocked lol ....
is good to see two great drummers like caloiuta and marotta saying "it took two of us toe play what steve played by his self." That show the respect that the drummers comunity has. Great video !
I hope Vinnie's had an achievement award honouring evening
Colaiuta, Marotta, Porcaro, Palladino, Pass(alacqua)...Italians have got it in their blood, baby! :)
Weckl, wackerman, Rich, peart....
Evan Rice
oh, yeah...sure...jewish? or germans?
+jojosmooth All Jews.
+Evan Rice.. Peart is not Jewish.
peart dosn't has blood... he is a robot, that is why he sounds as one.
21" Zildjian Custom Special Dry Ride. I have it, and it's awesome!
Is it really a 21" version? Sounds so cool!
That’s the original 21” K Custom Special Dry Ride. It’s much better than the new one which sounds like a trash can.
@drums2play1 Rick Marotta is a drumming legend who has spent his life playing with greats like Vinnie. He's easily in the same league as these guys and has been one of New Yorks go to guys for decades
That cowbell at 1:47 is nasty! And the snare hit from Vinnie right after Rick starts that groove is wild
Apologies, who is the man they keep focusing on in the audience? I recognize him but cannot remember his name.
So great! and inspiring! What's even more impressive is they probably didn't rehearse this more than once if even that.
Oh yes. Pure gut instinct and raw talent in display!
Drum solo, hmmmm!!! Their reading sheet music, very boring!
neil technically doesn't do much fancy stuff but he creates insanely inspiring drumming...but yeah like the other guy said, i bet benny greb, nat townsley etc etc etc have all listened to and loved pearts drumming.. im just happy that there's so many great drummers out there with the numbers still increasing because of guys like peart(and also travis barker and joey jordison even if you think about it)
Nothing remotely impressive?? I'd love to see you match this.
So you go on youtube one day and you see a link to a drumming video, lets say, and see a gospel player, tearing it up and you are impressed.. and rightly so. So, you look up more videos and you start to rate the drummers on how fast/powerful etc they play. This is a completely warped view of music!! Travis Barker has a great feel and technique... but vinnie is all of that x10!
@jeffminutoli Rick is just being polite. Sure Steve did 'his version' by himself but we all know It would be completely impossible to duplicate this performance with only four limbs.
@benpowellfforddlas actually it's a drum duet. try to do the original piece on your own. How well can you do it?
"Rhythmic drumming style". Kind of sounds like it was written as if drumming is ever non rhythmic, that a "rhythmic drumming style" is some sort of unique thing, haha.
Such a beautiful and musical drum piece. Such finesse and groove from the players. I can't 'Like' this one enough.
@Tecallion Ironically, it's the combination of "too many notes" and "not enough" that creates music.
@RCRhythm actually i think hes wearing a zildjian shirt designed like the logo of the fdny. u can see the logos for the k a and z customs
lol I know you guys aren't inspired bye this but somehow i am because who needs technical shit when you can have pure feel like this :)
@Easleytee And I suppose what you consider is impressive is what; Travis Barker? Half my drum students can play better than him.
I read his book of his motorcyle travel around the country after the death of his wife, and thought it was a great book, I like him a lot and he IS a very smart guy. I don't hate him! :)
@klank67 and you're on here cause you can't play like either travis or vinnie... it's just sound, not a competition
@Tecallion either they all wanna pretend to be the better man their ego thinks they are, or they all agree with you XD
I don't think its a disease. Its just that some people need to change their perspective on what is "WOW". Most people are wowed by speed which is the problem. When I watch Vinnie play with Sting...for the most part he is playing pretty simple stuff but then he'll sneak in these unique phrases that fit so well with the song and are very unique. If Vinnie didn't throw in that "WOW" he would just sound like every other drummer. WOW can have its place in most situations it just depends on how much
All these negative comments are indicators of how the art in music is dying, and how stupidity prevails.
@JoeJacari ... Travis Barker couldn't play like this to save his life, that's why he's not on here :)
@Tecallion; Just opinion; unreflected and without any trace knowledge, I´d like to add....
i knew i heard this before the buddy rich trio with him dave wechl and steve gadd.....
@MrJonnyNitro I agree.....he is amazing!! People who say that Neil Peart is the greatest, just don't have a clue what they are talking about!
Hey there, Yes I agree, he is a great guy and I do like Rush but........There are so many drummers that inspire and 'wow' me like, Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Vinnie C., JoJo Mayer, Buddy Rich, Nathaniel Townsley, Thomas Lang, Benny Grebb, just to name a very few. Neal is a very simple drummer that gtr players would love to play with. And beginning drummers maybe, but I love to be WOWED!!!
I recently watched two of his vids, but they didn't change my mind....Sorry
dtdrummerlady Neil Pearl is to Rush, like Stewart Copeland is to The Police. They're both not the most technical drummers, but their contributions to their band is untouchable.......all that matters.
Give me this over the over-rated egocentric playing of Mike Portnoy any day.
@jamesdancer73 yeah man i dont understand how someone can get so good
Such a simple no-show-off solo that has had me obsessing over it ever since I heard it first years ago, i cant get over the beauty of the tom flams and the cowbell-hat-snare groove, such an iconic composition.
@lacrimassprofundere Wow same comment different wording? SO CREATIVE.
Oh for goodness sake. Why is Travis Barker always in these posts??
@gwb911 It's a COMPOSITION. It was WRITTEN. He can READ.
Scary huh?
Many people taught that this was the rhythm of Thomas Lang as Hudson Music ads.
Then they must be awful teachers.
Why are you all comparing Travis Barker to all great drummers???
2:03 to 2:22 is just shear godliness
So so so much 'feel', space and time.
If you want to find out how loose your hands are try to play the pattern Rick is playing at 118. Very simple 16th notes, but at that tempo to make it "groove" your touch has to be very loose, soft hands as they say. Love this solo!
@nuttsonurdrumset You should drop your drumsticks instead.
anyone notice that part of this at the stars sounds exacaly the am as the dw performance seires opening
@Tecallion Fuck what everyone says! it's friggin awesome!
The drums are a beautiful instrument.
Props to Marrota for hanging on for dear life ... vinnie is holding back and it’s still way out there...... amazing guy
Does anyone know what china vinnie is using on his left?
Waht a truly brilliant piece of music. These guys took a simple beat and turned it into something outstanding. Top marks.
Musical giants with solid resumes that nobody here can measure up to. Sounds better than my cd! Oh yeah, I don't have one. Maybe if they walked on water & played underwater would impress those naysayers!!
@MrAriestot009 I agree, you can't watch a single great drummer on youtube without somebody saying how much better they are than Travis. You'd think Travis Barker was the only other drummer in the world
Q Toooop 👍🎶
@170adamb There is one called Phil Collins. He cant be compared due to his unique rythm sense
yeah instead of putting someone down, why don't you just put the otherone up instead? i think the world would be a much nicer place that way
Deux "monstres sacrés de la batterie américaine" les rois des studios, de la scène et du groove ! On voit derrière eux le portrait de STEVE GADD (il ne manque que lui !).Didier D'agostino (vidéos sur youtube) fan total !
Marotta starts this up with an amazing baiao feel and lays it down beautifully. Close to how the Brasilian drummers play it, with precision and clarity. You can hear every 16th not and every inflection. Vinnie plays against it and sounded good. Gadd was honored.
Music is not about "wowing" people, that's entertainment.
If you listen to this the way you'd listen to an album, you'll get it. This is music - not some drum-atheletics thing.
Personally I think it's pretty awesome, even Vinnie Colaiuta wants to play music with Rick Marotta keeping time for him. That speaks volumes about both of them.
What kit was Rick Marotta playing and why wouldn't they show it?
@hyperiongrgio : The crazy army is called crazy army
:)))))) ha ha ha fantastic comment !!!!
really a drum thing? really as seth who would say?
@hedpeclan lol I was JUST gonna say, isn't that what they used for the trademark info for ALL these vids now..? hmmm...
Such skilled masters. Just perfection!
@captainguyman It's used in the intro to hudsonmusicdvd's drum videos
👍‼️ A fantastic "nod" to Steve Gadd!!! Sweeeeeet!
@lacrimassprofundere But how is it shit?
@julianisdope
Zildjian A Custom China
Rick's from Providence, RI. He did allot of gigging here in the 70's. Great talent from local stock..
Es ta rico el final ... queda un silencio maravilloso, no solamente se mide velocidad en estos tipos si no también los matices y la muy buena calidad de sonido !!
@c0d3x001 I knew that the hudsonmusic theme HAD to be played by at least two people ...
I'm not going to lie. Vinnie's "solo" literally brought a tear to my eye the first time I heard it.
@Tecallion well said,bro!
@blackjackbeast09 in fact,no need to be a musician for recognize this
...I love drummers who come to blows, literally beat his instrument! But it is also beautiful to see who plays with such technical and respect! Very, very good ...
Claudio, Brazil ...
@VichoPL ..... I'm up to 42 votes :)
@BrandonG1394 ... 33 and counting ;)
I would like to know the model of that Grestch , played by Vinnie...
Highly likely that is a USA Custom maple Vinnie C. signature model. It's ace
I am nothing but an ant to them!
@stellarshore wow u have no idea
hmm, teensy bit messy i thought.
@trovao1da2alvorada yeah right...
Vinnie looks hungry. I think he's thinking something like "what will i have for lunch today?"
3:15 is that Steve Gadd in the public?
Yes, he is with his wifw
Hudson Music introduction, I just can't believe I heard that here!!
When playing in the pocket and play soft complicated stuff like this it is awesome to hear
A segment of this is used as Hudson Musics intro jingle.
Vinnie is a fucking alien. :)
Jeez... the simple creativity of vinnies fills are sick! Great respect to the great Steve Gadd!
0:56 - 1:05 does anyone else recognize that part from anywhere?
@JoeJacari I haven't lolled so hard in my life..
@stellarshore A very delicate, tight, creative and techniqual dump;)
Bohold music.Behold groove.
what china is vinnie using ?
@JoeJacari lol
beautiful sounds, just beautiful sounds. amazing skill to pull such natural sounds out.
@TheHamDaddy Its a pretty common rudimental roll off/ cadence
man this is great, both guys play just the right things.
i love it when drum sets look so shiny.
That was pretty bad ass...
awesome
