Hands down the most raw, real, and hauntingly beautiful song/video I've ever seen. Yes it's sad and tragic, but there's just something about it that's achingly beautiful. Beautiful is really not a good term to describe the feeling. Also...when he walks outside and sees that scarf in the wind...feels. This is so well done and deserves an award.
My ex sang this song to me and every since then I've been in love with it.. We broke up two months ago and it's been extremely hard.. We had our own place together and I ruined that too.. If you happen to see this someday when you watch this, I'll always love you Vicente 💔
My first perception of this video was that it was of a soldier who was serving for his country in another one. In war you have to follow your higher-ups orders and make hard decisions, and I sort if pictured him being forced to blow up a building or a warehouse but he had knew that he had to sacrifice children or innocent people who were in it too. So "don't be afraid, of the smoke in our grenades, it won't sting your eyes," is them throwing in grenades or bombing the building, and telling the children not to be afraid, and that it will be over soon. Then "I'm gonna climb, gonna go out and a fight, i won't desert you," is him retaliating afterwards, keeping those children in his mind and his prayers, and mentally telling them that they are not alone. And "How come the sun don't shine on me, anymore, you know, you know" is him feeling guilty and unlucky, that he had to be the one to do that to those children and innocent people, but also knowing that the children are even more unlucky because they were killed and that they had to be caught in the middle of a war. And then theres the "la da da"s in the background and its representing the innocence of the people killed in the midst of wars. Although, thats what i thought it meant before i started watching the actual video along with it. With the video along with, I think that it mostly represents depression and what people have to go through when they deal with a mental illness, thought i kinda like both of the perspectives equally. One dealing with the guilt and hard decisions, and one with mental illness
Shelsea Lynne I like that idea! But according to the band, it’s about unreciprocated love. “Don’t be afraid, of the smoke in our grenades, they won’t sting your eyes,” he’s telling her not to be afraid of addressing their mismatched feelings, because he’s not gonna be a dick and make her cry about it. “How come that sun don’t shine on me anymore?” is pretty direct and obvious that he’s singing it about someone he loves deeply, who doesn’t love(shine on) him anymore. Even the video shows that. They had something, but that shine has disappeared, and even after the end of humanity he’s still trying to come to terms with his unreciprocated love for her. In the end, he decides to end it all go rather than suffer alone with the memory. Deadly little tune. Thats what the band said anyways. Unrequited love is a a terrible thing and best to be avoided.
My perception on this video was that he was on the verge of death, and the only way for him to stay alive was to become what he is now. Right before he was changed, he realised it was not worth it. Not soon after, he was left alone by the only one he loved. By being transformed he could live nearly forever. The empty city where he lived represents his life, as though it was torn from his grasp. The movie he watches represents the memories of when he was once human and all those happy times that he no longer has. Once he was no longer devoted to living, he pulled the plug and ended his life.
I always figured it was about mental illness. Like he took meds that made him feel cold and emotionless, like a robot, and his significant other left him for it. Then the gray city reflects his internal emptiness. But it could be literal like you said.
Well, according to the band, it’s about unreciprocated love. “Don’t be afraid, or the smoke in our grenades, they won’t sting your eyes,” he’s telling her not to be afraid of addressing their mismatched feelings, because he’s not gonna be a dick and make her cry about it, the grenade represents the confrontation, the harmless smoke represents him saying that addressing the conflict won’t be an explosive event. In the end, he decides to let it all go rather than suffer alone with the memory. Deadly little tune. Thats what the band said anyways. Unrequited love is a a terrible thing and best to be avoided.
My theory is that he was diagnosed with cancer (if you notice at the beggining of the video there was a pink flag that represents cancer) and he started to see days and life differently. The robot means he didn't feel anything at all, he was just lost and didn't know what to do. (Remeber robots are machines that don't stop because they don't feel and cancer patients are in a constant battle of pain everyday which makes the robot reference to make us understand that pain is an everyday thing just like a robot that is programmed to do something without stoping). After he was diagnosed with cancer he got depression and he was fighting to get out of it but when his girlfriend left him, his life was over and he lost the war with depression and cancer and gave his life because he couldn't handle it anymore.

This video is so sad but i love the message so much. I can't really put it into words but it's sort of the struggle of choosing between loneliness or wellness. That's not worded correctly, but I feel like the people here understand my meaning.
Sedni Well, according to the band, it’s about unreciprocated love. “How come that sun don’t shine on me anymore?” is pretty direct and obvious that he’s singing it about someone he loves deeply, who doesn’t love(shine on) him anymore. Sooo underrated... the song AND the video! This song makes me think, REALLY think... people need to remember that a LOT of things they're worried about are all in their heads. Society likes to teach us to be self-conscious which causes a shit-load of pain for all parties involved. I'd say that I think that people think too much, but that, in and of itself, is ironic, huh?
this song will forever bring me goosebumps. i've been listening to this song since it came out. it's 2017 now. i feel like a scared kid again. i'm doing so much better now, i just think about how if i could've gone back in time to just comfort that kid self of mine. just to tell them that every thing is going to be amazing one day, that it's okay to be yourself
Can't even being to start to attempt to think about saying what I think and feel when I play this song, over and over. I can only assume the main memory it derives from mirrors the one in my being that gets triggered when it's heard....."thank you" is probably the best I can do in terms of a comment. So, thank you x
came back to this a year later from being obsessed with it. how do you not like think of or cry listening to this? its so sad!! the story and the music and everything oh god its so hard to resist.

I feel like this song is about neglect of the different "Don't be afraid" "It won't sting your eyes" = fear of those who are different "How come the sun won't shine on me?" = Neglect of those who are different am i right?

Lady gaga's songs about rape are now gay pride songs so what do I know? I think there's more symbolism in about how he's literally broken and how he's not alive and that was the only way he could be kept alive and all that but he's just different and no one understands that's his real problem.

I'm in the exact same situation. About to go to sleep, spent 10min to find back this sound, still so good.
I am driving to LA and then I mentioned to my bf about a band that disbanded a few years ago. Maaaan

Yesssss!!! There's a haunting beauty to it
I bought their first hard copy cd when they first released it. Such an underrated band. 💙
lyrics:

Of the smoke in our grenades
It won't sting your eyes
And I'm gonna plan

Don't be afraid
Of the smoke in our grenades
It won't sting your eyes
And I'm gonna plan
Gonna go out and start a fight
I won't desert you

La, da, da, da, da, da

one of the best music videos of all time
I'm not sure which is more devastatingly sad yet incredibly beautiful.... The song, or the video.
Put together.... Quite breathtaking.
Listened to this song while I was recovering from a back surgery two years ago.... The time flies when you can hardly remember anything.

Man this was one of the first songs I learnt on guitar. Always come back to it in “those” times.
I swear to god it's so criminal how underrated and under appreciated this band is.

Jaylyn Abrams to be honest I have a very different viewpoint on this. I believe this is about depression and internal conflict. To me it's symbolized perfectly.
It's a pretty deep song... I think that's probably the most basic interpretation one could've gotten from it but, sure, why not? Everything's about being different now, anyway. I think the most basic would be that it is about depression. Both are nice ways to look at it though.
