Pounding Mochi | How to make rice cake | Traditional year-end events

  • In Japan, make traditional rice cakes (Mochi) at the end of the year. We eat Mochi on New Year's Day. It is made from rice, which is very important to us, and we offer it to the gods on New Year's Day. I always have my parents to send it to us, but this year we're going to do Mochi pounding ourselves for the first time! I've been watching my parents making mochi every year since I was child, but it was sooo difficult to do it by myself!lol

Have you ever tried Mochi(Japanese rice cakes)? It was a lot of work to make it🤣 but they were so delicious! You can enjoy it with anko(red bean paste), sugar and soy sauce, seaweed, natto, and various toppings!

When I lived in Shizuoka-shi, I made mochi with a close family. It was hard work, but so worth it! I love how Sutan could see you were tired so she let you rest while pounding the mochi. She has a beautiful heart like her mama 💕

I was fortunate to spend New Year’s growing up and having all my relatives and gather together at my grandparents’s home where my grandfather and grandmother did the actual cooking, preparing and pounding of rice cakes. My grandparents have already passed but I still look back with fond memories of Mochi tsuki. Thank you, Moe for showing this!

My memory of pounding mochi is local people’s gathering that neighbors get together at nearby school yard and make mochi all together. It is a great way to have a neighbor gathering at the end of year. Hope Sutan will join this kind of event and show her skill of making yummy mochi one day!😊💓

It's really an enjoyment to see you spend happy time with Sutan while doing the Mochi together. I am from a small Chinese village, where also has the tradition to make Mochi every year before the lunar New Year. I am deeply touched by how considerate and patient you are-you prepared a smaller instrument for Sutan, you stopped each time when she wanted to join in and give a try, you taught her the key points of making Mochi, and made small talk with her with love. I remebered those time when I was excited and wanted to imitate my mom and try something new, she would always become furious and impatient, yelled at me, scolded me and drove me away. You are such a caring mom, and Sutan is so lucky to have you as her mom. 💕

I personally don't like that (the saying). It's a very utilitarian moral. It also is the base for paying people badly or not counting work that is not payed.

@@selimasadfi2331 That is only a slight difference. I am more of the opinion that in a world that does not know where to put all the stuff, where pollution is rampant and where unemployment is a big problem, you should have your basic needs meed whatever you do - if you work for money, work without getting money (like care work) or do nothing what others consider work.
More "work" is not the solution imho.

    • @vincentknws
      @vincentknws 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@steemlenn8797 actually more work is the solution, in order to help pollution you have to work at it. It won't solve itself.

    • @parahaze4508
      @parahaze4508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@steemlenn8797 I think we're talking about the norm. If someone's really need to be dependent on others (perhaps paralyzed or mental issue, etc that took time to be fixed) then it's justified. That's what government health care is for (and other programs for unemployed). But it'll do no justice if "normal functioning" people rely on others forever. Also not every country's as wealthy to keep their citizen's needs fulfilled. World's tough so we need to be strong.
Just think that moe was saying what she said as motivation for Sutan. No need to be political here.

You can see how much joy it brings Sutan just to be involved in what her Mommy is doing. You can tell she really admires Moe and wants to follow in her footsteps. What a sweet girl she's always been, and keeps showing us how smart she is!! 🥰
P.S. Moe you looked so STRONG pounding the mochi!!! I was so impressed!! 💪🏽

Sutan is such a comedienne! I love her sweater. She loves to make you laugh and it was so cute watching the two of you pounding the rice to make Mochi. Be safe and may God continue to bless you and your family.

Reminds me back in the day when powerful women (my grandmother's and mother's generation) did such great work in the house and were proud of doing it. This is so much better for the household, family, and society. The kids are taken care of, the food is properly cooked, and kids are brought up to be wonderful human beings. The wonderful thing is you do this so well and also show it off to an audience who are likely deprived of such experiences because we are all busy watching your wonderful videos :)
Your daughter is adorable from 12:50 onwards when she can't keep her hands off the mochi...haha

You were struggling but you managed to form some sort of teamwork in the end, it's heartwarming. Sutan is going to learn so much from her mama. I can sense the strong bond between this pair of mother and daughter!
I have never had mochi but I already assumed that I'm gonna like it, I'm determined to love this food! 🥺✨

Oh my, that was a workout for you and Sutan! I've had fresh pounded mochi at Japan Day in New Zealand. They made it in a big wooden barrel. I can't wait for our next Japan Day hopefully in March. Enjoy the results of your Labour. Happy New year! I just have to say too cute! Amazing mamma
