The ending of this movie is one of the most unforgettable I've ever seen. The beautiful music adds to the wonderful scenes. Superb movie, I enjoyed every minute of it. Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks are both outstanding.

If you think about it, it’s really bizarre that the blood on her coat where the button was turned into a crucial piece of evidence that got her convicted. The blood stain was on the back of her coat, yet she supposedly bashed a woman’s head in with a fire extinguisher and yet leaves no blood splatter on the front of her coat. Just seemed really odd to me. There could still be other ways to prove her innocence.
not just that ,,if you watched the movie you should notice the fight with her murdered boss the day before the murder and how one of her colleagues saw her carrying the fire extinguisher which the murderer used to kill the victim

@@SamBlitzBullet09 He heard the sound of a button falling off just like she told them, maybe he checks again and finds it and gets to prove her innocence and they stop looking for them, or maybe the rain washes it away this time, and like you said, from now on he'll always wonder, but maybe next time he'll do a better job. I guess they left us wondering so we can draw our own conclusions.
Of course it happens. The world is not Hollywood, fluff or rainbows. Don't fool yourself thinking you live in the world of movies, you live in the real world. Be strong, not weak.
a very thoughtful ending to a very tense and emotionally involving movie about judicial cruelty, incompetence, injustice and societal indifference. the 3 men stuck out. the old father/grandfather (dennehy) whose relationship with his son (crowe) was strained at best, clearly supported is sons actions (irrespective of nonsense such as legal/illegal), the original arresting officer who began to doubt the the conviction and realise the woman's (banks) innocence (i.e. no regular person goes to this extent if they are guilty!), and finally crowes deeply haunted look at the very end realising that he will be hunted and wanted for all time by the arrogant police force and the tyrannical judicial system of the USA. there is a high price to pay for love and devotion but it is worth it in the end!! very compelling movie. watched it many times.
The reality is the cop lifted the right side of the grate, but he started sweeping the inside about 6 inches (or more) short of the corner. The corner would have been the obvious place for the button to be as it was closest to the curb and the flow of water. He screwed up. So close and yet so far. And the Brennans will forever be on the run as a result. Unless the actual attacker/thief gets arrested and somehow confesses.

@S O sansaviera was pointing out that if someone is bashing in someone's face with a fire extinguisher it would be hard for the attacker to get blood on their shoulder. Yes, the attacker/thief put her hand on Lara's shoulder and got the blood there. But that doesn't explain how the blood gets on Laras shoulder if she is attacking the boss.
I think it's just that he did it, he managed to her back to their son, in the french version of the film which this is based off of the ending is the same but she hates the man he became doing the things he had to do to get her out.
