HOW TO CATCH MACKEREL ON LIGHT GEAR - PLUS FEATHERS | SHORE FISHING FOR MACKEREL

  • After hearing reports of Mackerel being caught from the shore, I went to a local rock mark to see if I could catch some of these fantastic fish. I'd start by throwing out some feathers, as this would give me the best chance of locating some fish whilst also gauging the depth at which they're at. Once I'd caught half a dozen, I switched to the light gear to have some fun.
    My lure choice was a small metal, the 30g Sidewinder Mimic Speed Jig.
    This video explains a few things you can do if you're new to fishing and wanting to target mackerel over the summer months.
    I hope this video provides a some helpful tips and tactics. Thanks for watching and I'll see you on the next one 🎣

    Oh, the fun we had!!!
    Late 70s, early 80s, (why am I so old, how did that even happen!?) my dad bought a five-man dinghy with an outboard. For two weeks in summer, off the beautiful North Devon coast, we'd drop a string of feathers down to the sea bed, 200 or so yards off the rocks, reel up a couple of foot and pump that rod. Within minutes, the rod was bent over and a string of gorgeous blue tiger striped mackerel would come up. Occasionally the odd pollack or garfish too. We couldn't stay out for longer than an hour or two max, 'cus the boat would be full of fish! Oh, how I loved those fresh mackerel barbecued! We'd walk around the camp site, Big Meadow, near Coombe Martin, and sell the fish 10p a pop to the other campers. 🤍

    Once the mackerel fishing was a given. Never considered NOT catching them in the Summer. Now the numbers are pathetic compared to 30 - 40 years ago. Not seen a decent catch on Brighton Marina this year yet.
    The best month was June when they would appear in their thousands! Using 6 feathers was asking for trouble you got 6 every time.
    I used to float fish. The float never cocked - just went straight down!
    The foreign factory ships destroyed the stock and it takes DECADES to recover 😬😬😬
    Great video Call! But make sure you emphasise retuning those you don't need. They could become an endangered species!

    I normally dont target them, only the pollock. Tried a low water mark today. First mackrell on a soft plastic and then one on a 24g metal jig like yours and then another 2-3 on feathers. I was testing the water as you did but didnt have the same span of water due to rocks and weed. At least i know they are there if the pollock dont show up.

      Cheers 👍🏼 I use 20lb braid on that rod. To be fair, you could go much lighter if targeting mackerel, an LRF set up will be good fun. This is the rod I use for my general lure fishing though.

    • @aledafis
      @aledafis ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FISHINGWITHCAL Thanks, I might go with 15-20lb, in the hope I can get hold of some Bass too.
      Is Braid that much better than Mono? Would I as a beginner see much benefit in investing an extra £20 or so in Braid?

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aledafis Personally, I’d go with braid all day long for lure fishing. You may find it a bit weird getting used to using it but once you get a feel for it you won’t look back. The whole point of light lurefishing is to get some sport out of it, hence the light rods and smaller reels. The braid will allow you to feel everything through the rod and you can work lures a lot more effectively with it. Just make sure you spool the reel with the correct amount of line and you’ll be good to go. Also, don’t buy cheap braid! Get something that a local tackle shop suggests by someone who actually uses it themselves. 👍🏼

      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for subscribing 👍🏼 I'd go for an 11.6ft rod with a 5000 size reel as an all rounder. Many brands do well priced rods of that size that will cover you for throwing out feathers for mackerel, float fishing, pier fishing and you could even do some close in beach fishing with that. Go for a 2-4oz. You could load the reel with mono, anything between 15-25lb will be ideal. You'll be able to get a decent set up for 100 pound which will last years 👍🏼

    How many fish does one man need?? Surely 3 or 4 would be enough to take home...no wonder they're becoming scarcer every year

    • @FISHINGWITHCAL
      @FISHINGWITHCAL  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’d never normally take that many. However, as I said in the video, I took them to the care home I work at and cooked them for our residents for lunch one day. A couple would do me just fine normally. 18 mackerel are 3 full strings on feathers. To say some people hit a shoal on a boat and constantly pull in mackerel by the string for hours on end, I’m not even scratching the surface.

      @@FISHINGWITHCAL The 30cm limit is largely ignored. It is part of why mackerel are becoming scarce in some places. Do you ignore the bass limit as well. 30cm is actually a good mack' right? These days I mean. I have literally seen "googans" taking bin bags of undersized fish. Macks life cycle is like four years or something, overfishing undersized fish causes real instability in a population. It is not just a recreational subsistence fishing problem though, the super trawlers that fish them in international waters also ignore size limits. Mack's are the next cod. You should take a look at how America does it imo the UK could learn a lot and maybe then we could have sustainable recreational fisheries going forwards.
