Knopfler was number 44 in Rolling Stones 100 greatest guitarists list. I think he belongs in the top 10. Watch him play, he's transported and he takes you with him.
Top 1 for me . Alchemy album is a once in a lifetime performance. Never to be repeated for pure drive and engagement. Every song was performed better than the studio version. The changes in pace the ups the downs . Every band member has to be completely in sinc with what’s going on . What is amazing about mark is not only his unrivalled talent on guitar but the vocal emotion he emits . Every song is a story we can all probably relate to . The best
That's bonified BS!He's top 5 for me,side by side with Hendricks,Clapton,Slash,Sambora.Period.I don't give a flyin f,what so called renown critics and charts has to say.
Mark Knopfler’s rating as a guitarist in many publications is far from the truth that is almost comical. I would venture to say that most of his critics never experienced him live. He is a top 5 guitarist IMHO and is first on my list as nobody emits as much emotion when they play as much as Mark does. His guitar is plugged into his heart.
Knopfler once was asked, what are you doing after such big events like Mandela day concert, he replied : " I m going home feeding my fish and preparing me a soup." - that's real heroism
I wasn’t expecting this song to affect me so much. As someone mentioned, one of the most beautiful guitar solos and cool downs I’ve ever heard. This concert keeps giving and giving unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Absolutely brilliant. Mark moves me more than any other musician, period.
One of the greatest Live Albums ever released. Flawless from start to finish. I'm not sure if the generations of the last few decades after it's release, truly understand how Dire Straits were so ahead of the mainstream musical acts around in DS early years. They set the standard like a bench mark that inspired so many bands to follow. Mark Knopfler took his guitar playing influences from the greatest players before him and moulded them into something unique. I don't think we saw such a guitar genre defining band emerge in the musical scene until Radiohead released their second album, The Bends. And prior to DS there were only three bands as influential in terms of originality who were The Beatles, The Stones and Pink Floyd
Tunnel of Love from this show is without doubt the best ive ever heard MK Play that solo... Terry Williams is a god keeping it all together. whilst MK plays his heart out. almost brings a tear, it really is that special
just look at Terry's face at the end "breathless". Top drummer. Mark ending on his knees with a smile shows that he enjoyed every second of it. To play live in this flawless manner means that this band is second to none!
MK inspired me to play the guitar and he is without doubt a master of guitar players. The sounds he is able to extract from his guitar are just so beautiful and his solos take you on a ride of pure bliss. Many guitarist's have a great repetitive riff but very few play with such emotion and precision as Knopfler does. 30 years on and the playing remains the same. Doubt whether many songs of today which feel so shallow to me will still be played in 30 plus years time and still sound as great as these guys do.
He's the man alright. I would never get bored of listening to such playing and even the songs are long i wish they could be longer, each time it finishes I exhale wiya sigh...
7:34 this is basically taking you to a magic place where you have no clue how that sound is being made. Mark was very gifted and brought the tone touch control of acoustic guitar to the electric guitar. Basically what he is doing is what you do on many classical guitar pieces playing with subtle tone touch technique.
Love this song and, as an old drummer myself, love Terry Williams....as Mark Knopfler has said, he's a true rock and roll drummer ........Rock and roll forever.
I am sitting here listening to Dire Straights, Tunnel of Love still amazed after all these years how such quality songwriting and musicianship was recorded in the 80s. How did Dire Straights ever make it at such a vacuous time for rock n'roll. These guys belonged in the hard driving 70s when rock n roll was war and took no prisoners. Well I'll tell you one thing, these guys were the best band of the eighties by a country mile.
MK is without a doubt one of the greatest musical minds of our generation. Everything about this song is mind blowing - intro, outro, guitar, keys, drums and bass .Also love the driving creative guitar rhythm he gets, in particular the part 4.00 to 4.23...could listen to that on repeat forever.
So very, very lucky to see them live in 1985. It gives me goose bumps watching this, and other live videos from the time. I've been so privileged to see them live at the height of their popularity with most of their best songs live.
The intro to this song on the Alchemy album is just as good as the outro imo. The uploader had astonishly cut the intro out for some reason. Dire Straits and Pink Floyd are my fave 2 bands of all time. I seen DS at their "On Every Street" tour in Glasgow in '92, absolutely loved it!
First time in more than 30 years that I'm listening this song again... It still blows me away. Once in a lifetime band and musicians. Knopfler is a genius.
One of the greatest story telling songs of all time. Hanging on every word while the mind creates and the solo cries. A song of life, of growing up or whatever.
All though we'll never meet and some of us might never see this, we've all shared a feeling from all over the planet. Isn't that a beautiful thing...? Please share some more of your favourite performances someone?
Unforgettable, heard it first time in '86, after that 100's of times over the years, still today a pleasure to see and hear a group of highly skilled musicians enjoying themselves like this, thanks much for sharing 🙏
I remember in 1993 buying the double CD of Alchemy in Colwyn Bay. Petrol expenses from the company that I was working for paid for it! Lifelong fan since :-)
Reminds me of growing up, Listening to this playing darts/computer in our bedroom as kids with my brother before he passed. Great memories. Thanks for posting. Love to all xxx
I hate Mark Knopfler! I’ve been playing guitar for 40 years. I can accept that. I can’t approach the technical mastery of a great guitarist. Or that I could never write anything close to the masterpieces he composes. But when I hear a great guitar solo by other great guitarist on songs that I love, I can imagine, someday playing or thinking about playing something like that. I can understand it. With Knopfler on a song like Tunnel of love I’m surprised and awestruck. In my wildest dreams I simply couldn’t even think about playing those notes he strings together. It’s simply beyond my comprehension. So I try to analyze what he does, so I could approach that genius. I want to throw my guitar away because I know I could never even think that I could approach not just Mastery but the creative mastery. It’s a gift that I was never given or that I believe very. Very, few have. I hate him, but I could never stop listening or being amazed.
I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits first time just 10 days earlier at Zagreb stadium, just 10 days before Hammersmith concerts. After 4 decades still the best concert I saw, and I saw more than 300 concerts since 1982.
I remember listening this song of that concert in the eighties in my old 1974 green VW with my Pioneer radio KP 3500, I was 18 years old on that moment, imagining how lucky was that people enjoying in live to MK guitar solo, amazing!! Thanks to the guy who upload this song and particularly from this concert. Guess this is the best performance of this song, recorded in the Alchemy Album. I lost that Album.
i just HAVE to say once more that i love you MK, the melody, the songs you make with your guitar is beyond words to me, that there's something right there in my chest, that I'm suffocating with joy or something else?, so beautiful your melodies, your guitar sounds are, they make me about to burst into tears, i listen to you with immense pleasure ALWAYS and this make my worries go away for a precious while at least, thank you so much for your music.
I have the cd of this concert, but it's fabulous to see it on here on video - wonderful drums, keyboard & of course - guitar. My favorite song by Dire Straits.
Emociona hasta las lagrimas. No es el ver como entregan toda su habilidad en tocar los instrumentos y cantar; sino la calidad de la interpretacion. Fue un concierto memorable. Lo escuche del CD original; y es realmente un orgasmo musical. Grande Dire Straits
I was lucky enough to see them in 1985 at Deeside Chester. 30 years on and it's still one of the best things I'm glad that I did. Absolutely fantastic. Micktray1, yeh hair stands on end, whats left of it anyway!
methinks the solo at the end of Tunnel of Love - Dire Straits is the greatest ever played by mankind ;) With due respects to Layla Hotel California Freebird Stairway to Heaven etc etc Tunnel of Love solo is the only one that will make me cry tears of joy and the feeling of being blessed to hear a guitar GOD at his finest. Hail Sir Mark Knopfler!
Possibly the most beautiful guitar solo of all time.
Yes ! Always hearing it here
agreed
Knofflers a legend but think Dave Gilmour's got him beat - not by much tho'
Amen brother
💯
Knopfler was number 44 in Rolling Stones 100 greatest guitarists list. I think he belongs in the top 10. Watch him play, he's transported and he takes you with him.
Unfortunately alot of 'best ever' lists focus too much on technique and crazy licks, and disregard things like musical merit, emotion, melody, etc.
44, wat a f up, top 10,

The outtro solo to this song, in any form, live or album, gives me chills every time I hear it. I think it ranks as one of the greatest of all time.
The piano…. Just magic
unbelievable . and that's only a very weak description.transcendental
It makes me cry
I'M 26 YEARS OLD, I KNOW IT THROUGH MY FATHER, I'VE LISTENED TO IT SINCE I WAS 5, INCREDIBLE BAND, AND MARK KNOPLFER A GUITAR GOD

Pure genius, nothing less. It's the finest use of a Stratocaster ever.
D.D. went to another level when Alan 🎹 Clarke joined the band in 82
Best. Live. Album. Ever.
Agree 100%🎸🎸🎸🎶😍👌
alchemical Alchemy
6:44 onwards is a real masterclass in how to construct a solo, it's a thing of pure beauty 😀
not in a trillion years this will be reduplicated
Mark is a genius guitarist and personally, this is my favourite version

Greatest guitarist of all time in my opinion! Outright amazing outro to this song.
This is by far the best performance I have ever listened
Alchemy live is the only album i've owned in every format. Never get tired of it. IMO, Telegraph road, this, then Sultans, best 3 tracks.
Still enjoying this at 69 years old as good as it was back in the day . Genius

The best guitar “soulo” of all time, this particular performance was from the heart, you could feel it. Unbelievable 6:40 onwards…😢
How in God’s name does he get this sound without a pick. His technical virtuosity is on another level.
I'm speechless.. The song sounds better in live
You don’t “listen” to a Dire Straits concert…you participate. Luv ‘em.
Tunnel of Love from this show is without doubt the best ive ever heard MK Play that solo... Terry Williams is a god keeping it all together. whilst MK plays his heart out. almost brings a tear, it really is that special
Yep. :). I think that too
Exactly in my comment above . Mark is driving it on upping the pace . The whole team . One step ahead …. We with you boss !

Well said mate. Spot on that👍
Mk the only one who play different versions in life than studio u can listen to different solos everytime u get to see him in concert

👍
He's the man alright. I would never get bored of listening to such playing and even the songs are long i wish they could be longer, each time it finishes I exhale wiya sigh...

Have to agree, I saw them twice that year. You knew you were watching a truly special band, a class act.🎸👍
I'll admit that I envy you that you got to see them, and at that stage in their life span as a band. It must have been an awesome concert.
Me too. I saw them twice in Hamburg. They were so good after the first time that we saw them again! I will never forget it
The waltz from Carousel sets the stage for their finest song. Others come close; none top it.
Makes me nostalgic for a place I’ve never been 🎶
