I believe it‘s because it is there real first big world tour, and when you see how happy Mark is with the sound quality, he reacts like a kid on Christmas as soon he heard the keys and his guitar, and he knows it will be not only a Lp but a video too, you can feel the energy!
Mark Knopfler understands, what so many guitarist don't. There are times, when playing softly and using silence actually accentuate, what you're trying to convey.
I understand your dad. In the 90’s I listened to this song thousand of times. In cassette, man! And video in VHS. I couldn’t stop. Today I land into this video and listened to it once again. What for memories.
Alchemy Live is simply, one of the greatest rock and roll albums ever - I doubt there's a band that's ever sounded better than this in concert - this version of this particularly song frankly changed my life when i heard it the first time, probably 25 years ago - stunning.
I am not the greatest Dire Straits fan in the world, but have to agree. I have neverheard a better Live Album. Excellent Song selection and every song is improving the studio version, many times by a lot!
In 2016 I took a week to myself by hiring a cottage in the peak district during springtime, I walked for 6-8 hours a day through fields and country lanes listening to this live album on repeat with cans of beer in my backpack everyday and a pouch of golden virgina baccy and would be in my own heaven out in the countryside especially when this song played .
If I could pick any concert I could have possibly seen during my lifetime - this would be the one. I was nin years old at the time and living in Sweden, but hey, this is peak music.
And where is this excellent control of dynamics, synoptic playing, phenomenal combination of hi-hat/werbe of Pick Withers drums? I think it's time to get your ears checked :-) th-cam.com/video/uVEuddwm_UY/w-d-xo.html
The Dire Straits happy years. Alchemy was the best live recording of all times in the 80's. The John Illsley unique bass sound is amazing as a backgroung Knopfler personal guitar sound. The best.
As a kid I played Alchemy endlessly. Love how different and extended these live tracks are vs the studio albums, absolutely sublime. The live version of Wild West End in 85 is right up there with this classic. Pure gold.
I used to listen to this over and over as a teenager and still think its one of the best songs to make you forget all your problems and go somewhere "else" for a while. All of them are amazing but I always think about the discipline of the drummer and rhythm guitarist throughout the song. Bl**dy amazing!
So much light, shade and subtlety with this guitar playing, it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, this song part one and two, the whole concert set the bench MARK for live performances, a great nuch of musicians, Terry White on drums matches every MK note on guitar
I had a belter getto blaster back then the bass one it was amazing 1983 fantastic day's 👏 I'm 58 now and still enjoying the master of guitar 🎸 something else 😀.
The amazing thing about Mark's playing is that he always plays SOMETHING. Even when you can't hear the main notes he is feathering some other notes with his right hand. That is why so many people who try to duplicate his solos never really sound like him.
Wow, this concert is over 30 years old and still sounds just as great today as way back then. Timeless. Knopfler is just outstanding on the guitar, its live, he is making that Strat sing and taking you on a journey with his playing. And not just a small repetitive riff, a real lead guitar player, and one of the very best with out doubt. Just don't hear this anymore these days, such a pity. This whole concert is amazing.
I loved this album so much that I had the cassette, the VHS tape, then years later bought the DVD which I still own today. That Sultans of Swing and this song is by far the best live version of any songs I ever heard.
Been listening to him since way way back. Still love to hear them. Love how Mark checks his band while doing his thing up there. That smile says...good going guys
I am playing and replaying this for weeks now. And much more from Dire Straits. I can’t stop listening to them especially live. Greets from a born 1969 belgian music lover.
The interplay between the drums and the lead in the middle part of this is eerie and moody ... my favorite Knopfler work, even though solos on tracks like Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road show more virtuosity.
Et bien, en 1985, j'avais 30 ans. Et j'ai pas fini d'ecouter Alchemy. Toujours. Comme un fil de vie qui accompagne les décennies, comme une evidente presence, toujours.
LOVE this because Mark doesn't even use his signature 'Strat' tone. Just the neck pickup, clean and glassy. A jazzy urban reggae song with Sergio Leone spaghetti western title!
I remember buying Alchamey on VHS back in the day and my brother and I never realised at the time that we were witnessing greatness. Never to be replicated never to repeated a moment in time that will be remembered for generations “Ladies & Gentlemen can you please welcome to the stage dIRE sTRAITS”!! 🎸
Mark in a wonderful shape! Young but not too much young, he played his guitar like never before. Great songs and solos construction for all concert. Amazing inspiration. The best i’ve ever heard
A band of virtuosi, and they all love what they're doing. But, Mark, you were one of those in the '70s who turned me on to becoming a competent rhythm and lead guitarist, I worked at my legato, my portamento. my vibrato, and my scales (though I found modes more useful (tone, semitone, tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone tone will be the Aeolian Mode, no matter in which key you play it) but I was never able to rid myself of a plectrum. In all my jeans (except when washing), in the little right pocket) is a small case of plectra. I was good enough to spend 16 years as a popular heavy metal lead singer, lead guitarist and songwriter, and at the age of 61, I can still hack it. But I will never, ever be able to sound like you, Mark. You are an inspiration. I did take away the extended "orgasm song" thing (David Gilmour does it too), but always acknowledge my betters and superiors. _Salue,_ Mark Knopfler. You are inspiring.
Yeah, they are so tight - almost intuitively so; not to mention Mark Knopfler's weaving phrases in and out of diatonic modes, pentatonic boxes and raking arpeggios.
38 years ago heard and watched this awesome concert video back then chur like many other great artists from that Era such a pleasure to have discovered them back then lovely to walk down memory lane
We like to highlight the performances of these Alchemy recordings (Terry Williams' drums for instance), but the bass groove throughout this particular track is superb. Just listen, but maybe 4:30 and onwards
I'm glad this album was recorded before Brothers in Arms was released. Whilst a good album, it doesn't beat their earlier material which is performed here so brilliantly.
For me, it’s right up there with Machine Gun, Baila Mí Hermana, and No Quarter for greatest ever guitar solos. Just mind blowingly beautiful. I have specifically listened to this song in the most beautiful places I’ve been - places where time seemed to stand still and I was alone - because I knew listening to this gorgeous piece of music would take me back there in some way.
alchemy is the best live performance recorded ever, in my opinion. they topped themselves with that one.
So true
@@chrishall7915 Than is 100% correct! BEST!!
Right
Impossibile in human bean to make another alchemy one
I believe it‘s because it is there real first big world tour, and when you see how happy Mark is with the sound quality, he reacts like a kid on Christmas as soon he heard the keys and his guitar, and he knows it will be not only a Lp but a video too, you can feel the energy!
I drive home to this version every Friday!
👌

Mark Knopfler understands, what so many guitarist don't. There are times, when playing softly and using silence actually accentuate, what you're trying to convey.
Yes
A gifted storyteller and his guitar work is ridiculous!
It's called dynamic range, and sadly in modern music is frequently overlooked.
@@DeesoSaeed It's weird how male players today are afraid to play with range.
O my god! My dad used to listen this live Alchemy song. So much better than studio version. RIP. Thanks dad.
🧡
I understand your dad. In the 90’s I listened to this song thousand of times. In cassette, man! And video in VHS. I couldn’t stop. Today I land into this video and listened to it once again. What for memories.
Love from Norway, your father have great taste of music❤️🇳🇴💙
Alchemy Live is simply, one of the greatest rock and roll albums ever - I doubt there's a band that's ever sounded better than this in concert - this version of this particularly song frankly changed my life when i heard it the first time, probably 25 years ago - stunning.
Well said ! Fan for 34 years and still going strong !
I am not the greatest Dire Straits fan in the world, but have to agree. I have neverheard a better Live Album. Excellent Song selection and every song is improving the studio version, many times by a lot!
Beatles
But I agree dire straits are far underrated
Especially mark knopfler listed out of 20 best guitarist for Rolling Stones, it is clearly a mistake, very original and clean sounds
I used to do the same, instead of walking, it was on repeat for 400miles while driving home...
You are not alone.
Why does no-one listen to natural sounds anymore when out? Literally everyone has earphones.
@@jrb4935 Bc I don't want to listen to their bad taste in music? 😀😀
@@ZZMJo Eh? Whose music? I'm saying, why does everyone now have earphones when they're out?
I have never heard ANYONE play like Knopfler. He's in a class by himself.
Mark teaches god hoh to play
Outstanding solo between 5:15 and 6:15. so brilliant, how he changes tone, rhythm and speed.
I really think those who have been to this concert are the luckiest among the people who have ever existed
Yes saw them live in Sydney mid eighties
I ve been thinking the same for ages
If I could pick any concert I could have possibly seen during my lifetime - this would be the one. I was nin years old at the time and living in Sweden, but hey, this is peak music.
Yes, I was at this concert!
This is just a concert from the tour captured on camera? Do you think the other shows were worse?
The best once upon a time in the west performance ever.... Thank you
sem duvida....
👍👍😃

So tight, Mark is a true legend and the way he’s leading the band while performing vocals and lead guitar is phenomenal.
Yep. They killed it!
The Dire Straits happy years. Alchemy was the best live recording of all times in the 80's. The John Illsley unique bass sound is amazing as a backgroung Knopfler personal guitar sound. The best.
It's hypnotic from 5.10 to 8.40,
One of the best songs on Alchemy.
For me the first 10 minutes and 53 seconds are magical.
Wonderful song and great guitarist knoppler one of the best of all time
❤Perhaps the best concert opening of all times!❤ from Portugal.
❤❤❤❤❤
Am I the only one who thinks that this is the best version of the bass in once upon a time in the west?
I do agree. What to say about the tremendous Terry Williams at the drums!!!

A left-handed.

this must be one of the finest songs ever written. simply sublime.
Alchemy Live. The Best Live Album Ever. No doubt.
2024. Still sounds like invented this year.
Two minutes intro that worth everything... and that "Ahhg" is so classic, phenomenal...
As a kid I played Alchemy endlessly. Love how different and extended these live tracks are vs the studio albums, absolutely sublime. The live version of Wild West End in 85 is right up there with this classic. Pure gold.
The way they put the magic wand to the studio tracks, and give them their life fully fulfilled live
Amazing!! Awesome!! Incredible!! Astonishing!! Dire Straits forever!!
Bassist is a legend❤

Hands up for "discipline"
That is one of MK magic, he can take you on a journey with his songs! One of the best story tellers!
It just came on my flo and I was instant tears but good ones as it triggered memories from 30+ years so thank you
Especially the instrumental part in the middle is simply out of this world!
So much light, shade and subtlety with this guitar playing, it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, this song part one and two, the whole concert set the bench MARK for live performances, a great nuch of musicians, Terry White on drums matches every MK note on guitar
Terry is white but his surname is Williams
@@terri-annematthews7369 Thanks for the correction, how did I make that mistake. Best wishes
Tinha 15 anos quando ouvi este álbum, hoje tenho 53!! Sensacional!!
I'm only 28 years old..people around me don't understand my obsession with Mark Knopfler...his guitar sings on his behalf🤌🔥😍😭😭
I’m 27 and I get your obsession too 🫡
I love the way he turns and looks at the drummer to say “right , here we go”
Bass line in song is fantastic. Me. Isley is one of the best !

In late 80s during my uni days, my Friday movie night was to play ' Alchemy ' VHS.
Still love Dire Straits and their music.

U are like me. I was born in 1969 and Mark Knopfler = Dire Straits for me always is = are the best of the besst
The Odeon's walls and stage had the privilege to showcase this Magnificent Concert,, Mark and his guys just outdid themselves.
My god John Illsleys bassline is rock solid and grooves like nothing else….carry’s the song imo
Man they are so polished... flawless brilliance. These guys earned their place at the top.. so much respect. :)
The interplay between the drums and the lead in the middle part of this is eerie and moody ... my favorite Knopfler work, even though solos on tracks like Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road show more virtuosity.

This is how good they had become in 4 short years
What happened in 1979? The band formed in 1977 and this is 1983.
@ They hit their third album by 1980. A successful band has to reinvent by that point.
Yeah, they are so tight - almost intuitively so; not to mention Mark Knopfler's weaving phrases in and out of diatonic modes, pentatonic boxes and raking arpeggios.
Like a powerful version of a top song. Such a well-designed shift of relaxation and top-notch charge .. after this song I am completely exhausted ....
Yeah you're right
The drummer is just perfect i love him so much!
The drummer its" terry Williams...."
Cool.
Terry Williams 🤘🤘
If Eric gets on stage with you then you know you really are a professional.
Musical talent at its best......its fuckin beautiful. Gotta love that groove
This is certainly the song I listen the most in my life... one of the best song I know...
Mark's dynamics are amazing. I wore this tape out 35 years ago.

Such a good album, and this is a textbbook example of the difference between bass, rhythm, and lead guitar too.
