You should try using softer sand as well as maybe 2 or 3 inches of it so the balls immediately stick their landing. The balls - er competitors are bouncing and rolling because the sand is too hard and too densely packed. It would look cooler it they landed with a nice thump and stuck. Plus easier to measure. Looking forward to the 2019 event.
You measure from the first point of impact, or the closest mark on the sand. A "nice thump and stick" would be even more annoying, since he would have to physically pick up every marble in order to see it's full crater to analyze before measuring. It's better like this where the marble can just clear out, and you measure the impact mark. Physically removing a marble would possibly result in a human mistake or error that could affect the mark. You want the marble to bounce cleanly away. Why did you think bouncing and rolling was a bad thing? It's actually a good thing.
@@adameves5970 Youre entire issue with the "stick" could be completely averted by just marking where it landed before removing the ball. He still needs to physically pick the ball up and infact needs to chase the ball as it bounces around (as he does in the video). Not sure how the ball staying put on landing would make this feat more difficult. I think the roll is a bad thing because its less visually appealing and makes it harder to get instant feed from a glance back like the other competitions.

dang! was so excited to see this one but its not done right at all, the balls should have long run up where they gain speed then stick into the sand right when they hit, also mix with a timer that starts when they take off rolling that will trigger a Pop-up mechanism at the take off board to give height, if they hit it just right they will mix speed with perfect pop for great jump!
This event is very cool. I do hope that Jelle finds a better way to film it next season though. I'd really like to see the moment of impact in slow-mo and closer up. (might be a big ask though)

I find it difficult to spot where the marbles hit the dirt in the long shot because of the distortion of the curve. Would it be possible to add gridlines across the field so it is easier to see where the marbles hit? (If not, don't worry about it.)
Thanks for feedback! I'm not yet sure if this event will turn back in ML2019. If yes, I will add gridlines and a second cam to make it more easy to follow.

yes some soft fine grained white sand should do nicely
