Being an old man and having seen the progression of talent from the late 70's when I first started playing rudimental snare to what it is today is truly amazing. The level of musicianship, chops, control and overall sound that is coming out of these young people is inspirational. I can't imagine being in the same universe with people like Brandon. He's a naturally gifted and hard working young man who has earned every bit of praise he receives. Congratulations Brandon, you're truly one of a kind!
@@mpk6664 Hence the reason I said ,"He's a naturally gifted and hard working young man who has earned every bit of praise he receives." Natural talent absolutely plays a roll in addition to the obvious hard work he puts in. They go hand in hand.
One thing that has helped drummers reach higher levels of rudimentary execution is the advancement of drum technology. Back in the 60's and 70's the drums that I am familiar with were very basic. One shell, two single ply heads, two steel rims and a set of snares, all balanced on the side of your leg with no leg brace. Very basic equipment but still fun. Fast forward to today. High tension Kevlar drum heads and cast iron high tension rims with full body mount harnesses to carry your drum. Because of the extreme high tension of the new drum heads a Drummer can easily multiply their rebounds and speed 10 times over. However, the finger control required to do what this Drummer is doing is still amazing. He would be a great Drummer on any kind of drum. There may have been better equipment in the 60's but I never saw it. I think drums are a little like automobiles. They have advanced a lot since the old days. That is a very good thing for modern drummers.
ataricom yea at the end when he goes from the double stroke roll to the singles, he struggles for a second to make that transition into the crescendo. He recovered tho.
That's so funny lol when I saw that I immediately thought "a world class musician could and should have done better" just a perspective from inside the activity
..those seamless transitions to different rudiments and 'feels', compounded by the speed he's playing at, puts the difficulty level in a completely higher category. Unreal.
I’m a wind but I was going to be in the line but I missed the auditions but I can almost do that but all the other winds that know nothing are kinda annoying lol
My god we are all getting old... I remember seeing him on TH-cam in like 2010 when I started marching and even meeting him at a DCI show at Mt. SAC in 2013(?) then seeing him get into the blue devils and everything. I graduated high school 4 years ago and seeing this now just makes trips me the fuck out. Really happy DCI worked out for him so well. Congrats to Brandon foreal.
We've come a long way with I&E videos. First one I saw was Ivan Pacheco's 2004 solo. Yes, THAT one with the elbow...in glorious 360p and one camera angle. Also very cool to see a TH-cam drummer win two solo titles and become center for BD. Amazing!
What a beautiful testament to what people can achieve with tremendous amounts of discipline. It’s incredible seeing how much he has grown. Beautiful work, Brandon. Like others have said, a living legend.
Wow absolutely amazing solo. Congrats. I’ve seen a lot of them but the singles and speed is not matched and I’ve been watching for over 40 years and competed back in the early 80s. You rock Brandon!!!!
That was absolutely killer. The level of control is really impressive. That original video of him was part of what inspired me to dive a lot further into the world of marching percussion and I fell in love with it. Of course I had to learn ditty because I was in high school and here was this prodigy who could play circles around me; one day I'll be as good as he was at 12, hah!
I came here not knowing who this guy was, but reading through the comments and listening through this performance, I am thoroughly impressed. Sad that he’s aging out of the drum corps soon but it’s clear that he’s changed so many lives during his time.
I am sure he will be an amazing instructor but I doubt everyone in the line is capable of playing this way. Depends on the talent of the people honestly, not on Brandon.
@@mel-px7hl I respect that Kaamel. I'm a drummer too and truly admire the level of expertise displayed here with the fabulous rudiments inc flams, Swiss army triplets paradiddles, single, double and triple stroke rolls. I give thanks to God for the intelligence and abilities he gives to all of us.
Not sure why these drums caught a bunch of flack. If you know how to tune a snare drum, that’s it. I have one of the performance snares from Ludwig (System Blue) with a white max on top and falams on bottom. It sounds incredible! Sounds like any other drum that’s tuned right. I think the combo of the “System Blue” heads made the drum not produce the sound we are used to. Not a fan of those heads but I can see why they are nice for performers. They have a nice feel, and touch. Just doesn’t produce that rich snare sound.

You get used to it. I work on speed by playing sixlets
It's worth developing some of these skills as a wind player. It helped my comfort with harder rhythms.
Very true, he is phenomenal. A lot of the speed is from finger control and not as much forearm, hand or wrist.
The part where stick smack drum 😎
Kinda quirky doe 😳 😳

the stick kinda vibin doe 😳 😳
