Sir, you are a very generous professor. You have rightly pointed out the challenges and circumstances after doing a PhD. One of my brother(long relation) did his PhD in Optimization from University of Florida. After that he worked there in R&D as well, but due to visa hassles and future uncertainity he came back to India to look positions in academia. This was the point where he got to know the real picture because one holding PhD from Harvard was also struggling to find position in any IIT.. Due to the cut throat competition he really wrapped his head around. Sir, I believe there is urgent need to upskill the students in PhD program with entrepreneurship also where they can transform their research into a product which can add value to the society. Incubation centers at IITs should support and help PhD students who they think have decent amount of potential to bring some change. This can also be amplified when various organizations also collaborate with these students in their respective research fields. I believe if this could happen our PhD workforce might give jobs rather than seeking jobs. Please let me know what's your take on it. Thank you
Though I am from electrical background.I feel myself very lucky to found your channel... It is helping me a lot to know about research career. It is very difficult to guide student on TH-cam besides your job .. You are doing great job sir... I am expecting that ee branch professor come out and guide student in this way..
Respected sir I am preparing for jee 2022 . I always thought professors of IIT would be very rude but seeing teachers like you makes me study more hard to get to IITS..hoping to meet u soon❤️❤️
Thanks to both professors for your valuable advices. As sir said, most of us tend to use the libraries as much as possible, instead we could go into the algorithms and write the source program on our own. This is a point I will absolutely try to incorporate in my PhD by spending some extra hours. Sincere Regards
Hello Prof. JC, thanks for the video. Would you be willing to make a video on the issue of Institutes of Eminence in India, a list that includes IIT Kgp, and what this entails relative to the institute administration having autonomy in matters related to building up an endowment with alumni funding, actively collaborating and receiving funding from private players in India, deciding its salary structure (specifically, make it independent of the central pay commission), setting up specialized university-affiliated research institutions (e.g., APL-Johns Hopkins, JPL-Caltech, Lincoln Lab-MIT) where recruitment will be independent of GoI rules re faculty hiring i.e, not subject to caste-based reservations?
Sir. I am doing my Post Graduation in Energy Engineering in a State University. May I know what are the viable options to get a job in this sector sir. Thanks in advance sir.
Very nice and informative video Sir. Thank you to both Professors. I had to study commerce based on my parents persuasion, though I have always wanted to do a PhD in microbiology. Looking at ur videos, makes me feel that, I should have been very stubborn and convinced my parents back then. Really missing my love for science.
Sir can you arrange same kind of interview for life science phd scholar. If it is possible. Though I am not from engineering background, I am benified from your videos. Thank you .
Sorry, I don't have any idea about that programme. But I do know that there are some excellent professors in the broad area of mechanics there, and my guess is that they will be the ones involved in this programme. If so, we may expect it to be really good. But this is only my guess.
Sir i am a 2nd year mechanical engineering student and i want to go for higher studies. Apart from python do i need to learn any other programming language which will help me in my further carrer? Thank you sir.
The biggest challenge in learning how to program is to develop your mental capacity for organized, step-by-step, logical thinking. The challenge of a particular programming language is somewhat of a cosmetic one. If you pick one programming language and learn it well ... really well ... you will be well set to pick any other language depending upon future needs. The fundamental ability to program, however, is something that you need to develop in a very strong way independent of any language.
Prof JC, any tips to weather the PhD Quals after years of working in a non-relevant core industry?(I got really slow at writing, hand calculation and working out dynamics problems in terms of direction conventions)
Sir please help me out because iit's has started there admission procedure , I'm going to pursue my engineering master's degree in mechanical or production industrial this year but I'm really confused about the specialization/course . My sole purpose for doing my masters is to become an professor in government college . And also should I go for m.tech+PhD or mtech then PhD or mtech get a assistant professor job and do my PhD parallel .
What is the on campus placement senario at iit kgp mtech manufacturing and design and thermal. Which one is better carrer prospective among them. Because sir I qualified gate 2022 and go for counselling with my gate score this year
I am from Design. And the last placement round for our students were good in an unprecedented way! Just a word of caution, just because it was very good last time, does not mean it will stay that way. I think a better basis for decision would be to think carefully about your own affinity for the subjects. Do you feel a connection towards solid mechanics, vibration, dynamics, control or fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics or the manufacturing subjects?

I mention this in passing in the first minute of this video itself. The situation regarding academic jobs is the worst in the whole world (it is still much better in India). We have to accept the fact that some of the best students from the whole world go to the US for their PhD. Then during postdoc, even more good students who have done their PhD outside the US go there. Together this pool of candidates creates a mind-boggling competition for the relatively few academic positions that are there. And, the situation can become very exploitative. And, actually there is a very real possibility that many of these students in the US (who went there from India) will be coming back to India, thus further increasing the competition here. In fact this is already happening. That is why students doing their PhD here need to be all the more vigilant to up their competitiveness in the very near future for academic positions.
Please make a video how to upskill ourselves? And also shed some views on validity of online courses from Coursera etc. For learning power electronics, powertrain basics and electric mobility etc For example, do industry accept such online courses? Can we add them in our CV?
You have boosted my confidence after having discussion on AI, ML with mechanical combination/flavour. I have selected this challenging task in PhD at the cost of experimentation. Is it good choice? But yes, after taking the skill sets of AI-ML, I started feeling that I gained something different from my fellow guys. Also, I made my programming skills better in MATLAB, and Python for applying AI-ML.
Awesome. Keep at it, never compromising on the fundamentals. In this mass market of AI-ML "experts", it is only genuine expertise that's going to stand out!
Hahaha ... believe it or not, I actually tell all my students to view my lecture videos at 1.5x or even 1.75x! I really speak very slowly. But I think it may be helpful for people who are not that comfortable in English.

Thanks for sharing the story. Some good institutes do have such technology incubation centres. But we certainly need more thrust.
