it's not that they're throwing a fit over a name, it's that they're pretty much required to because the school superintendents are extremely anal about the rules for staff. i've had teachers who were super cool and didn't mind being called by first name, but as soon as word got out about it the superintendent cracked down on everybody. that also means the cool teachers had to be assholes about it to make it look like they're doing their job properly, but they tried to let a lot of things slide if the classroom doors were closed. in short: it's the superintendent to blame

In Japan, I taught English in an international school. Back there, every student called us by our first names. Not a soul felt offended. It was simple.
