This video was just what I needed I’m returning to school after a two year break and I decided to finish my associates in psychology. I finished my core classes (I just have one more math and English) and it is time for me to take my major courses. I had a fear that once I finished, my credits wouldn’t transfer over. Thank you for this information; my mind is at ease now.
The key is to never change your major and make sure that your prospect 4 year universities have credit agreements with your community college before you even start. Following this rule alone will help someone transfer well by a thousand fold.
Glad I clicked this video. This is exactly what I needed to hear. I have been struggling with what I should get into as far as moving forward with a bachelors degree.
Lesia, first let me apologize for my late reply. I have been in the middle of a transition these last 4-5 months. I’m glad that the information was what you needed. I wish you best of luck in your endeavors and if you have any questions please feel free to always reach out and ask. I’m here to help
Everything you said is VERY true. However, you forgot to discuss how general education requirements are a part of your degree in addition to your major. Hence, everything stated in video still applies 100%, but you could also mention that some courses taken prior to transfer could still apply to general education requirements, especially history. Hence, not all courses would have been taken in vain had you decided to change majors. In addition, if a big portion does transfer, such courses can still be applied to the elective portion of the required 180 quarter credits or 120 semester credits. In addition, transferring to a different accredited system can increase your chances of taking lots of courses you already taken. For example, I live in the state of Washington which is of The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities which includes Hawaii, Oregon, Washington state, Idaho, and Montana. If I were to transfer to a university within these states, my AA-DTA degree would most likely fulfill most if not all college general ed requirements. If I transfer to a university in California, however, I would highly likely be repeating lots of courses since California is not part of the The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
The general ed requirements and maybe two of your courses in the major will satisfy the University’s requirements. But it’s all dependent upon your University requirements..
yep they're criteria is very different, we just need to be in the game and everything else will come, part of the adventure of the journey, is the learning aspect of it @@DoctorStubbs
I did. I even went to law school. Now there's a couple of variables to consider in your question. What was your GPA? And what do you consider a dream school? If you're like me, had a 3.8 GPA, and saw SMU as a target school, you're in a good position. But if you had a 3.8GPA looking at Yale and MIT, that might be unlikely, but not impossible.
This is one of those “it depends” situations. In the scenario you gave, you will need to contact the college where you intend to transfer from and ask them “how many credits will you all accept?” Some schools may take, all, some or even none. Great question Rakan and I hope this helps
I'm looking into going to college to get a AS degree in nursing than after that I would like to get a bachelors degree in Engineering. Is it possible to do this in four years? or will i have to do 2 years for AS degree and a full four for BS degree?
Forgive me for the late reply. The answer to your question is yes. However, keep in mind that every school may not accept all of the credits from your AS degree to be transferred towards your BS in engineering. Here's my advice, contact the school you're transferring to and get in touch with the engineering school. Ask them, "Who do I need to speak with to determine the amount of credits your school will accept of my AS degree?" Once you find this person (typically called a transfer advisor) after they analyze your credits ask them how long will it take for you to complete your bachelor's degree at full-time status (typically 12 credits/per semester). Let me know if this helps.
They’re both associates degrees but the AA-T is a degree that guarantee acceptance into a partnering university, at least in California. If you plan on getting a BA, I always advocate going with the AA-T. However, some universities don’t allow you to switch majors once accepted with the AA-T so verify with the universities if changing majors is allowed after being accepted or while applying.
I’ll be honest I got a lot of question, but one of them is if I can change major. I just graduated H.S. and am deciding to major in Social Studies in a community college, should I instead take AA classes? If so, would this effect any kind of records in general. I’d really appreciate a respond back😎
Hey @MujoOfTheMind yes you can change your major. However, it is recommended to declare and stick with a major by the end of your 2nd year of college in order to avoid paying for courses that don't count towards your degree. I would HIGHLY recommend you take AA classes (meaning your foundational courses - such as english 101, business 101, history 101, etc.)
Question, I gotten into a college for liberal arts and science(AA). But I wanted to do Data Science. Could I change my major before going to college? Since if I don’t I’ll be missing out on credits in the other major.
No you are not doing more work. You are actually doing the same amount of work, but for a lower price. Community college just make sense if you value saving money.
Do you think the acceptance rate is good for AA transfers? I have mostly As, except for one B and one repeat( I received an A on the next attempt). I'm hoping that I get accepted into the local university so I don't have to move.
I can only say that your chances of being accepted is increases due to the fact that you’ve shown that you are capable of completing college coursework. Most colleges assess your ability to complete college courses within a set period of time (typically 4-5 years). You’ve proven you can complete coursework, which gives you an advantage over other applicants who have no college coursework experience
Typically this is the case. If you are transferring your credits to an institution within the same state it is more than likely most, if not all of your credits will transfer. If you take your courses out of state there may be a few that do not transfer. Reach out to the school your looking to attend Registrar office and they will be able to give you an official yes or no answer. Hope this helps.
Hello Doctor, I have a question‼️ So I am getting a associates multidisciplinary degree this year, typically would that be able to transfer into a psychology bachelors degree?
Your multidisciplinary degree wouldn’t be able into “transfer” into a FULL psychology degree, but most of your general education credits (like English 101) would “count” towards the psychology degree. As always be sure to contact the school you’re transferring to and they’ll be able to tell you exactly what will and what will not transfer. Hope this helps.

@@DoctorStubbs no problem. P.S. I made an error. Hawaii is part of the WASC Senior College and University Commission not the Northwest one.

Thanks Skip (if that’s your name)! This is really helpful.
Will the credits be transferred to bachelors of electrical engineering if I have an associate of science degree?

Are you doing more work at community college with being a transfer student and getting a associates? Please respond

Is there any downside to transferring As degree to Bachelor's rather than doing 4 years of straight bachelor at a university?
