  • Massed Military Bands & Massed Pipes and Drums: Opening night of the tattoo on August 2, 2013. What a great way to end our 2 weeks in Scotland. This was one of my favorite moments...SO beautiful. Still gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes.

    This sentimental claptrap is what my wife (50 years and counting) wants played at her funeral. So now I can't hear it without floods of forecast nostalgia. Thank you.

    I was there and had never heard it until then and was moved to tears, felt a bit silly sitting there with tears rolling down my face, beautiful moment in thyme though :)

    My dad's people came from Scotland, this was a song my grandad, would hum all of the time, down in the holler they lived in, in the hills of Kentucky.

    Sorry, but Wild Mountain Thyme is not Scottish, it was composed by Belfast musician Francis McPeake in the 1950's, and the last time I looked Belfast was still in Northern Ireland.

      @@chiaramaclellan8859 Its based on an old scottish song ,but there is nothing in the song that is alien to ireland,14% of land area of ireland is heather covered bogland and plenty of mountains not as high or as dramatic as scotland but we have plenty of them and antrim where francie McPeake was from is particularly hilly.

      @@benholland9240 Ben, it isn’t embarrassing, it’s a beautiful song and the massed pipes and bands are amazing and a true credit to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. Tartan, pipes, castles, whatever is painted on a short-bread tin, Braveheart, Outlander, Brigadoon and Nessie may be fantasy to varying degree, but they’re some of the best things Scotland has to offer.
