Lego really should make more unique molds for speed champions set, like f40 headlights totally need some unique mold that covers this ugly gap with glass. And god damn stickers again, we have to force Lego to print everything and to release new replacement printed parts for free for old Lego sets with stickers, because stickers are non durable paper crap with glue that will peal off and loose it's original colors within decade or two or after washing of parts, and many sets will be ruined! Actually with stickers you can already ruin sets during build! I have so many screw ups with stickers I feel like my Lego sets are defective! So I consider presence of stickers as potential defects that needs a replacement! And we must demand this from Lego!
I absolutely love the new F40 looks, just those headlights though. They aren’t even there, which isn’t like speed champions at all. It just a big gap made to look like a headlight. It’s like they didn’t even put any effort into it. Can’t wait for the Volvo truck and excavator review!
It looks good, it's hard to replicate the F40 headlights without it looking too basic. I like that they went with recreating the black housing with the two lights inside rather than using slope pieces.
We really do miss Chris Stamp his absence is obviously showing in the latest Speed Champions releases while the City vehicles are truly next level this year.
Honestly I think the simpler wing construction on both the 6-wide version and the Creator version look better. They miss out on the slight curvature but even the large Creator model couldn't capture that at that scale and the new car would've looked better with a thinner wing that had a completely flat top instead of the supports sticking out.
Since people of a slightly older age are the focus of the speed champions sets, I wonder why they aren't making more vintage vehicles in that line... we've had the countach, the F40 and a few other already, but what is stopping them from makinf a BMW E30 M3, or a Mercedes E190? They would be pretty easy cars to make in lego as well
Man... I had enough money for the creator expert one but my mom told me that I had too many legos already. Now I'm an adult who can buy whatever I want and it's hella expensive :/ I guess I'll have to settle for a speed champions one :'(
This has to be my absolute favourite speed champions set to date. It’s EXTREMELY accurate to the real thing, such a shame it’s held back by the side window prints, if only the red lining was a bit lower, making the windows wider. Other than that though, the headlight choice doesn’t bother me at all, I think it looks a LOT better than all the attempts I’ve seen using slopes. And everything else is essentially on point. It’s soo close to perfection it’s insane.
Personally I think that the designers' efforts are commendable with this one. There are a lot of sacrifices taken, but wow it's a fascinating model! Love it despite sacrificing many things such as lack of headlights cover
I’d love to see a video of you ranking the 8-wide speed champions! I think it would make a great video during the down time between reviews. I really value your opinion about the building techniques
Just finished building this one. Took about a couple of hours. Love the rear end and the simplicity of the build. looks great. Shame about the front end light stickers, but, with limited space this is about as good as it gets. Overall a good addition to my other speed champions models.
This is the best Speed Champions car, along with Aston Martin 007 Bond, and Lamborghini Countach. These 3 cars surpass their Icons/Creator Expert versions (in value for money)
Having missed out on the previous F40 builds I am looking forward to this one. I agree that a revisit in a larger, possibly 1/8th scale would be perfect.
I am a huge F40 fan and have the creator expert and six stud versions. I also have a moc from nv carmocs on rebrickable for an 8 stud wide F40. In my opinion that version looks better in many areas such as the wing and front but the Lego version has a better side profile even with the gap. I will probably still get this version though.
I really like that most of the essential parts with neccessary contrasting decoration are printed. Thank you for mentioning the side windows, I believe people are too focussed on the fact that they are printed in the lower part as a quality treat instead of seeing the problem with the window size. In the real car the window starts directly above the horizontal upper surface of the shoulder line. Interestingly the headlights don´t bother me that much, but I also don´t complain about the lack of window represenation in bigger cars as long as the proportions of the body panels and pillars are good.
“I’d like to see them remake some creator expert cars in this scale.” Like the BttF DeLorean! The Bond DB5 was so awesome, please do more movie cars in Speed Champions.
Em... The one 8 studs speed championship I might not buy is the lambo vision GT. That is simply because my view of the speed championship is to recreate REAL cars in a small Lego form factor. BttF no matter how much I like the movie, it's car is frictional...
The F40 is my favorite car or all time. I have the previous two and will get this one as well. I would LOVE to see it as one of the super cars, but I doubt that happens, too old. But a refresh of the Creator would do fine.
A great review Balaczs, and one that I was looking forward to. I think you hit the nail on the head in your list of positives and negatives. I appreciate that even with 8 stud wide Speed Champions, the designers have to make compromises, so I can live with the gap in the door and the printed side windows being thin, BUT the lack of front headlamp covers is a big No-No, and detracts from the overall look. I did like your 3 car F40 line up, I’d love to see Lego revisit the Creator model and improve it, but I somehow doubt that will happen.
This set is a day one buy for me, it's really sleek and a huge improvement from the original imo. The only thing I prefer about the older set was the ability to switch between the stock F40 and competizione, I think that was a really neat feature and something I wish was still possible with the 8 stud set. I understand people have differeing opinions on the headlights, but I like them, I prefer this choice over a sticker/printed slope or cheese wedges, because I think that this captures the headlights better than either of those. Short of the team just designing a new custom piece entirely that'd likely only ever be used in this set, having the headlights more like cutouts feels like the lesser of two evils since I felt that MOC builds using slopes with prints/stickers looked too flat while the cheese wedges were too small, so I think this was the best compromise.
It is very immpresive that they made same model of car, in smaller scale, yet with more curves, for example, rear wing It is more beefy (problem with scaling) yet, it has better shape
Great review. I don't think this set is perfect but I've seen a lot of F40 MOCs and they all get a lot right but some things wrong. It's just a very difficult car to create with lego - seems simple but it's got lots of subtle curves and small details. The shape of the headlights in this set is impressively spot-on but I personally I prefer transparent pieces rather than the implied shape. Just a matter of taste though. Definitely going to be picking up this set as a parts donor for my own design. Would also love to see Lego redo older models and see how far they've come. Seeing this one next to the old 6-wide also shows what a good decision that was too, so much more detail and so much more accuracy in the shaping.
We definitely notice Chris Stamps absence! Absolutely, I said this to people before I heard he’s moved on. The designs feel much more rudimentary than previous years 8 stud offerings
I am so sure there were fancier solutions to the side doors and headlights, Also a little detail that the 6-stud wide had is the black line across the whole car was brick built, that's missing on this one And while I appreciate some aspects of this new one there is definitely too many things off, despite how much I like the F40 I feel like skipping this one (I've been feeling like skipping Speed Champions sets lately sadly)
I don't think enough credit can be given to Chris Stamp, especially seeing as though his presence in the City theme has coincided with some of the highest quality sets we've seen in years. I didn't even know why I took a sudden liking to the new city sets as i hadnt built one in years, but now I know Chris was behind it, it all makes sense
The old speed Champions F40 has extra parts that allows you to convert it into the Competizione version, which is omitted in the new one A bit of a bummer but i’m still gonna cop this one as soon as it releases
the side door and window are the biggest problems for sure, i actually dont mind the headlights that much, even though it would have been better with some glass in them. overall it looks very nice from the right angles, so it is a shame it falls flat in key areas
I think the overall proportions are great. But maybe there were too many unnecessary compromises made. However the back, the windshield print quality and shape of the car are very good.
The headlights are such a huge detail missing. I'd wait to see if someone comes up with a decent solution to address the 2 holes in the front where the headlights should be before considering buying this. As it is, I think I still prefer the older SC F40 from the outside. It looks more complete and you had options to mix up the look of it with a couple of extra custom options pieces.
I found this F40 in my local walmart like a week ago and decided to pick it up and it was an amazing build the new camaro was there too but i didn't pick it up then
The front headlights are a bit dissapointing, but I will buy this set nevertheless :) I was just wondering about the odd numbering of these two new august sets - the AS doublepack is 76925 and these two are 34 and 35 - why the gap?
A pass for me. The front is a nice idea, but the rear looks a little too bulky. Think I'll stick with the moc community for a Speed Champions scale F40
It’s already for sale in NL. I’ve got one on my shelf already. I agree with most of the review. The front looks unfinished with the open headlights. The hole in the door I don’t mind so much. A brick build airscoop is always better then a sticker airscoop. The lego figure won’t fit in the car with the hair on. Also, there’s no helmet, which is rather unusual for a speed champions set.
I think it looks great. The only other ways to make the headlights at that scale is with cheese slopes or by using the same technique as the countach which don't capture the shape properly at all so I think what they've done in awesome. Also I don't think the air intake is a large issue because you can only see it from certain angles. The best looking speed champions set since the Audi Quattro S1 from 2020.
Those headlights are terrible. I think it'd make more sense to make the front not curved for the sake of using some side-printed transparent headlight pieces.
The location on the box art looks like the coastline city in Forza Horizon 2. If you can find out what city that was inspired by. You'll probably find the facility
I am quite a big fan of how the nose looks. I know not everyone is a fan of the empty headlights, but I really like it, its the closest shape to reality, and virtually any moc uses the cheeseslopes, which just looks off. What I can't get over is the side windows. Really??? Did they not look at the car. This one is not a matter of possible techniques or space constraints, but a lack of care. It would have been 100% better without the under edge printed. The canopy from the Ferrari F8 works much better here, even though it wasn't designed for this model. Really weird and odd decision from the graphics department, for me it completely ruins the side profile of the car
I wish they had included a competizione version like the 6 stud. Will have to go MOC. The biggest surprise to me was there was no helmet for the minifig! This set and the Mercedes G63/SL63 are the only two Speed Champion sets that don't include one... Kind of makes sense for the Mercs I guess.
The lack of headlights is the biggest flaw and makes the build look incomplete. The front reminds me of a skeleton with this look. I also really dislike the look of the wing. This car looks like a MOC or B model that was limited due to the pieces in the A model.
I loved the front at first, but the pop up headlights look way too huge and they take the attention from the (lack of a) headlight, that in itself feels a little too big and close to the ground. I still like the set though
Good review as usual 👌 But I´m a bit disappointed by this set. The lack of headlights are too off putting for me personally. I would have been better if the headlights were prints or even stickers in this case. Still hoping for a decent F40 since i missed the Creator Expert version.
Minor detail, but something I noticed was how recent sets like the Solus GT/Mclaren F1 set uses paper bags, but the F40 set uses plastic bags… honestly I quite like the use of paper bags, and how they’ve been designed, especially with the patterns. Is there a reason for this, or is it just a manufacturing thing?
LEGO has several factories around the world, and they are gradually transitioning them to paper bags. This means getting paper or plastic bags in your boxes depends on the date of manufacturing and the geographical location as well.
I was trying to figure it out, but lego themselves really need to ditch the massive windshield piece that the dark horse mustang has. It doesnt fit any of the cars it respectively comes on, and would be better replaced by a trapezoid shaped windshield. Like a middle ground between the smaller exceedingly sloped ones, and the very large and boxy problem windshield. I could not imagine a 1960s mustang with that hefty screen myself, and a lot more vehicle possibilities could be utilized, past and present, with a more angled piece

Honestly I like the headlight. Better than 2 clear slope pieces

I already saw a video with a fix for the headlights.
Yeah, I agree where it is better than nothing, and the fact that not all Lego sets are perfect and all have their own flaws
We really do miss Chris Stamp his absence is obviously showing in the latest Speed Champions releases while the City vehicles are truly next level this year.
Yeah, now I see why the City sets are such marvelous this season. This man a real shinig star in LEGO.
Why did he transfer? Own choice or management ordered?
Honestly I think the simpler wing construction on both the 6-wide version and the Creator version look better. They miss out on the slight curvature but even the large Creator model couldn't capture that at that scale and the new car would've looked better with a thinner wing that had a completely flat top instead of the supports sticking out.
I cannot say no to a red Lego Ferrari! Always love the amount of detail they cram into these 8-stud-wide cars, the building techniques are bonkers.

That opinion is absolutely insane. Despite the flaws on the 8 stud, to think the 6 is better...smh
@@liamgorman3947 It is what it is. Maybe the flaws are more glaring and unbearable when the backdrop is more accurate

The F40 looks cool and everything but Lego needs to start releasing sets like Porsche, Honda, Nissan, Lamborghini, Subaru, Toyota, etc.

Would have preferred a Ferrari Testarossa with 2 certain men wearing some fancy coloured suits...
In the background is Positano, Italy.
The lokation in the Back is Pusitano in Italy. Went there 3months ago
The headlights left the chat😂😂😂
Not funny🤦🏻♂️
I think a big F40 will be coming.
