  • A brief overview of the guitar, how I found it, and the work I've carried out.
This guitar is believed to have been retained by the factory in 1981, as a demo guitar, and eventually modified for promo or sales purposes in 1984.

Love it ! I have 2 Springy Sound Strats, one black 1978 ST50 and a blonde 1982 ST80 with the V neck , which I personally prefer . Great Strats . Sold my Fenders except for my beloved 2008 Baja Telly .Cheers

    I've got a beautiful 1981 Tokai Springy sound ST50. I think & it's absolutely incredible.
It's obviously based on a 1958 Stratocaster with the C shape neck and 3 tone sunburst.
It's got the Tokai stamped bridge saddles and tuner's.
Plus the 7 digit serial number beginning with the 1. All original and in great condition considering it's now nearly 43 years old.
Always loved the early Tokai guitar's.

They’re great guitars! Absolutely lovely build quality, and the attempts to replicate the American machine stamping with imaginative (often nonsensical) words and phrases - I love it.

Correct. It’s a guitar seized in 1982 January at customs UK. Sent back and rebranded with the new tokai goldstar logo. Many examples of this. This was because of a lawsuit by Arbitor. So whole batches are sent back so tokai are flooded, they change logo fast to a black block and send back to the uk end of December as 1 big batch just to sell, they then rebrand what’s left to goldstar sound and new logo, as you can imagine with these guitars basically traveling 3 times, they traveled for about 4 months back and forth, tokai are now scrambling in 1983 just to get stock out, it takes till 1984 to correct it all, 1985 tokai is firmly selling the new goldstar sound and AST in the USA. Note. USA would not accept a fender headstock so the AST is sent, the TST is sent to Europe and Australia with small batches of the AST56 only.

St 80 had e stamped pickups. Best single coils i have ever heard.

Yes, I guess Tokai decided to put their slightly newer design in this when they rebadged it and added the extra hardware - for a more modern feel. My ST60 has E pickups and, as it 100% original, I’m resisting placing them into this guitar. If I spot a set of Es, I’ll add them to my shopping list! 😀

My 1986/7 ST50 Goldstar that I've had since new, had U pickups - same as E pickups though not hand wound.
Candy Apple Red with rosewood - laminate (not slab) - fingerboard.
The knobs, selector switch and PU covers have all yellowed but not to the extent of the earlier Springysound. More cream...
Choices available at the time in our local shop where ST40 and 50 both with rosewood necks and ST 55 which had maple.
Nothing higher. Headstocks are correct fender type.
V1 and V11 pickups seem to be a variance of windings of the E and U according to the Tokai forum and probably hand wound - possibly impedance matching?
I replaced all mine with Seymour Duncan vintage types in 1990 when I started working regularly as a pro - and they are still in it.
In the mists of time, the originals have all disappeared which I regret as they were bright and 'spanky' sounding. Fool...
It has since had new replacement tuners - high quality nickel Gotoh vintage types - and replacement TOKAI saddles that I got direct from Tokai Japan. It is most likely the hardware on these are made by Gotoh anyway.
Some had budget DiMarzio single coils that where black bobbin - not grey like the E, U and V's.
They are excellent guitars. Price point usually signified changes in hardware or finish - but the lowly 40 to the highest 80 all had excellent wood and workmanship. Of course sunburst needed one or two piece bodies for aesthetic - but 4 piece on painted was quite common as it was at Fender from the early 60's.

E and U stamps are absolutely amazing. Best combo is a U bridge and E neck. U's are machine wound, thicker, darker, therefore. E's are ultra transparent.

Do you know much about the later VII (sometimes stamped IIV) pickups? They're what came in this ST80.

I have the same guitar as what you just showed on the video, apart from mine is a rosewood (veneer?) board.
I have been searching about that trem for ages, they play great, spund great, mine have the grey wiring, didnt see any pickup id, whereabouts would we see that, as mine may be a Springy Sound as well

I have a very similar guitar but it has a 3 screw neck plate...would that mean 80 as opposed to 81?

Likely one of the Tokai Silverstar

My 1979 Springy ST80 is also alder. I wonder how many ash were made compared to the alders?

That’s part of the trouble with Tokais - they are difficult for is (the western market) to trace that much from the records. I think they have had an ownership change or two over the years, but I have seen letters to in response to people who enquire - so they’re not deliberately secretive. Whilst they became desperate to gather stock and handle legal challenges/complexities, they may not have gone into the detail of an inventory of guitars, with serial number, model numbers, timbers used, hardware, etc.

    sorry no 'Skunk Stripe' - not a st80 1981

    • @2oomus
      @2oomus  2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

There is clearly a skunk stripe. Watch the video again, especially the clips of the back of the neck, and you’ll see it.
The only way there could not be a skunk stripe on a maple neck, is to have a maple laminate fingerboard, like a late 60s Strat, and this is definitely not the construction here.

2:24 plus, there’s the factory ‘80’ sticker right next to the skunk stripe! 😂
