This is the 'holy grail' kind of channel where so many things come together - an absolute G of a player, from a top top top band, explaining stuff that is artistic, technical and geary, with fantastic quality of sound and video. And not least, your personality seems so chill and friendly. Matt, the stuff on your channel is just priceless. Thanks for taking the effort!
Thanks!
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai Genuinely so.
Why in the world did these die out in the 70's? These sounds are so timeless.
Along came DX-7.
@@KC9UDX I suppose the same thing goes for electric pianos as well.
@@quisp1492 could be, which is odd considering how much simpler and easier to produce these must be.
@unarmed blackman This is a great insight. I have never heard anyone put it in that context. I had a DX7 in the late 90's and I always thought that it was thin and kind cheesy sounding. Placed in the proper historical perspective though, you are totally correct. The DX7 had the power to replace all the keyboards of the era and then some. No wonder it was such a game changer.
get a clavinet, get an organ, get a bunch of untuned percussion and make some of the coolest fusion ever... whos down?
I put this on a bit too loud and now Bootsy Collins is in my kitchen looking for jam.
Haha I love that!
Hahahaha
Good luck hiding that jam, I hear he can see around corners.
Quit insulting black people's culture! That clown can even move like black people getting down. But then again you're probably one of those aholes who support cops killing blacks.
@@DavidAllen-dj7sd what the hell are you talking about? how was he insulting black culture? bootsy is the funk
Holy shit you don't understand how happy I am that i found this channel. I love Jamiroquai so much it's not a joke.
Matt’s sense of time can’t be understated. The rhythms are so precise, which is essential to solid funk feel.
Cory Wong on rhythm guitar is the same way. So many people can get the notes… but the rhythmic precision and groove is impeccable.
Hey Matt, since you saw this, check out the comment you got tagged on in my Jamiroquai video when you have a sec. :-D
Awesome video. I can't believe I get to learn how to play the clavinet from the keyboardist of one of the most prominent funk bands of our era. Happy new year!
What was the tune he played right after the Hendrix?
Sounded very familiar but couldn’t place it.
Anybody?
You are one of the great teachers too Mangold 👏🏼🥳
Matt is a phenomenal musician - Jamiroquai are so lucky to have him. Seasons greetings and keep up the good work. Cheers.
The clav is the coolest instrument in the world. More naturally funky than any other instrument, but also surprisingly versatile--I love how well it takes to effects pedals. Hearing it under the fingers of a keys grandmaster is a hell of a Christmas gift.
"clav is the coolest"
Really? And what is the Hammond??? 😁
@@deejuicemailbox The hottest!

There is something special to watch a pro musician geeking out around tech with dexterity... ;)
And in slippers...
The production / sound shaping knowledge is excellent too. This knowledge is not anywhere Matt. Thank you for the creative inspiration and insight.
its ridiculous how much I've learned from these videos. He's also an absolute gentleman. This is the kind of thing youtube should exist for.
Definitely great stuff Matt! Thank you
I'm nowhere near having the playing ability to profit from these classes, but just listening to your examples is a great musical experience to me! Have a great new year, and I hope I can see you live somewhere as soon as this crisis is over.
This man is a funk phenomenon. I've been plinkety-plonking my way around keyboards for decades and never come close to this level of natural ability. Just a joy to see someone do it all so effortlessly. 'Just a bit of practice', lol. Happy New Year, Matt - thanks for sharing your gifts and knowledge with us lesser mortals.
My advice is to pick something that you like and copy it. Use the youtube's playback speed to help you and go over and over until you have it. Get a metronome up and and run it as slow as you need to to get through, say the first bar, or even the first half bar. Gradually ramp it up until you've got it up to speed, then move on to the next section. Then play them back to back, and so on. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can progress. It's taken me about a week or so to go from "What the heck is he even playing there" to, as of last night, just about being about to play the groove at 6:05, with just the very last part at the end now always ending up sloppy for me. Another couple of evenings and I hope to have it fully nailed :)
That left hand is always dancing, pretty hypnotizing in a way
When I was a kid we had to put a tape on and rewind it to learn, slowly picking out the sounds and notes. Now we get a master musician showing us every trick in a free video. I can only imagine the player I would be now if I had access to the information back then that people have today. Thank you!
Eh sounds like a rough hypothetical if you ask me, speaking as a 25 year old. Some people are slow or suck at learning what others do.
I was noodling around with a clav the other day, couldn't for the life of me get anything half decent out of it. And here is Matt completely shredding it, amazing!
I saw a video where the player approached it like a percussion instrument and play it like bongos with all the little slap accents on the black keys and that made it easier to feel out a Groove, it was a really helpful tip
I can't believe one of my all time keyboard heroes was hiding in plain sight here on TH-cam sharing his secrets! I met you very briefly at the Frankfurt Musikmesse...
Now I'm off to binge the rest of your videos!!
10:00 Its little nuggets like these that make your tutorials and other similar ones so valuable, in 10 seconds you demonstrate the magic of a simple, syncopated funky groove. I'm a bass player and I had to pause and rewind to lock in this left hand groove!
His left hand there just made bass player redundant 😉🤣
A Funky Christmas everybody!!!
Seeing your fingers doing these riffs and licks is a godsend Matt.. You are such a legend for sharing your knowledge with us. this is a really special channel
Watching you bounce from bass left to melody fight (16th note) opened up my understanding of slap bass. Thank you!
When a harpsichord and an electric guitar love each other very much...
Fantastic demo Matt, especially enjoyed the alternative wah techniques.
Thanks Matt ! 👍

11:15 Jesus Matt, your left hand is better than most bass players
Matt, seriously thanks for showing us your teachings. A real professional, and an inspiration to all of us teaching music on TH-cam.
Sales of clavnets are going through the roof next year! Brilliant exposition of clavnet playing. Had me dancing!
The Clavinet really fit those Hendrix tunes so well !
Great play Matt, thanks and a happier new year to all !
Brightened my Christmas up no end with this Matt, hope you are having a good one yourself! Cheers!
Thanks, Matt to share your knowledge with us. All the best karma to you, your family and all the community!
Mr. Johnson once again delighting the spectating crowd with his masterful demonstration of today's most modern funk clavinet system.
In 1985, I friend of mine was trimming down his keyboard rig. I brought his Oberheim OB8 (non-midi) for $700 (which I STILL have) He wanted to sell me his Clavinet for $150. Yes you read correctly, $150! And like a dope, I said nah! If I knew then what I know NOW! Now they go for $3-6k! I like these plugins but finally we have somebody that knows how to PLAY ‘em!
Splendid clip, Matt. Thanks for teaching funky clav.
So glad I stumbled over your channel today and getting the possibility to learn from a gifted professional like you. I really appreciate that and find it very inspiring. Thank you!
I can't believe I just stumbled across this channel today. I almost exclusively watch keyboard/synth/organ videos and funky music videos. Get it together, youtube! 😂 This is an awesome resource I can't wait to dive into. Jamiroquai has one of the best bands on the planet right now. You guys rock!
Awesome! One of the greatest funk keyboardists sharing his knowledge. Thank you very much ❤. Greetings from Argentina!
Could listen to you all night long, never get tired of this.
I’ve bought some of Matt’s video downloads, and there is plenty there to help you build your skills for years to come. I highly recommend them.
Thanks for showing us all these amazing keyboards! Here’s hoping 2021 brings you and all of us lots of happiness!
Love your videos, dude! Clavinet is one of my all time favorite instruments, so I especially love your funk clav playing! Nice!!!!!
Watching you play Burnin of the Midnight Lamp made my day. I just started playing Clav and your video came at the right time.
Matt you're such a boss!
I have an E7 and just marvel at the originality of the instrument, sometimes it feeds back too! Your video is awesome! Thanks Matt!
Truly a great tutorial Matt. You really brought out of the box ideas to inspire while keeping it straight forward and funky.
as usual always very interesting and refreshing.
a great pleasure to watch you playing with such musicality ( please more lick tutorials played slowly to learn them!!!)
i want you to know that you changed something big in my music.
thanks for your kindness, we can feel it through the screen....!
I wish you the best for the next year for you and all the people you love.
Philippe from France
Oh goodness. The most inspiring Clavinet lesson on the internet. Fantastico. Now I just need to borrow Matt Johnson's entire central nervous system!
Besides all the things you learn here - it's just fun watching and listening Matt play!
I really hear that Jamiroquai sound and it is great to see how it is put together. Really makes tunes and I love what you are doing on this channel!
This one really has me grinning. You've put into words something I've felt and loved intuitively for years
Matt this knowledge is priceless. I like you explaining the “why” (or whah”) behind the way you play.
Ending the year with a cheeky Hendrix riff was definitely the way to go.
Merry Christmas and the happiest of new years to you and yours, Matt! All the best to you and thank you so much for the content you put out. It's really appreciated and so helpful!
I really appreciate this level of thought. Going into tone, feel and engineering.
Your play is magic! I would like to listen to your play never ending! Thank you!
I'm a bass player but your vids always get me in the mood to jump into my keyboard and practice
I have a reverence for this man's playing and teaching style. Always top notch tips!
God of Groove Soul bless to you!
I´m a very beginner pianist and this stuff is gold.
I´ve playing drums for a long time (not bad i think) and i also love bass and groovie sounds in general.
Nowadays i´m getting fun with boogie-woogie on piano (really mad, i know). After one year of application i look like a real boogie player (but i am not really, just a fake pianist who can´t play piano (at least half i can play drums).
My next learning project (because you) is going to be funky and cool keyboard haha.
Thanks again for your videos, you are very generous and incredibly talented. You give us real luxurious info.
Thank You Matt for these great videos!
I learnt a lot from this video, most notably that the Vibanet exists.
Also that rock example just reminds me so much of George Duke in early 70s Zappa
Love your Masterclass. So much useful funky Clavinet information in one place. It's interesting that that the Clavinet and the Hammond organ are the two keyboard instruments which demand to be approached in a specific way.
Finishing the year with Funk Clav wisdom! You Legend! Love it.
I follow all your videos, thanks for sharing all your musical experience, simply I’m amazed with your channel.
One man band ! What a grrove meister, a real inspiration. Alot of this stuff gets lost in the mix I reckon. Matt you send shivers up my spine, thank you for this video..
Every video you upload is a masterclass, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Matt, your channel was one of the happiest things that happened to me this year! Thank you so much!!
This is so dope - when I see a new video from Matt I am so stoked - don't even play clav and now i am wanting to! Love ya Matt -thanks man! I am learning a ton from you.
I used to have an old clav. Sadly though, I had to sell it. This is the best funk clav lesson that I have ever seen! Thank you, Matt!
Happy holidays! Thanks for another great instructional video!
Your the best teacher ever! Everything you demonstrate is the coolest keyboard sounds & styles. Simply Brilliant! Keep up the good work! Best of the Holidays to ya!
Amazing. Thanks for the lesson.
The last example reminds me of synthesized distortion guitar.
Matt you are a legend, I really appreciate you creating these videos for us!!! Thank you dude.
i love the sound of a good blues lick on the clav with a little wah on it...can't go wrong
If you think we missed the Stillness in time reference.. you are wrong! Brilliant stuff, these videos are absolute gems! Stay funky 🙏🏼
Happy New Year! Hope to see you play live in 2021! Thanks for all the videos, really enjoy them all, you are such a great guy and musician!
Only just discovered you man and this has to be my new favourite instrument. You're an amazing teacher
Wow!!! What a cool demonstration! Never thought it was so difficult to make it sound that funky!!! Great skills! Great sound! And great video! Thanks for sharing! Cheers from Argentina!
This is a fantastic and super informative! I really learned quite a bit of about why funk sounds so awesome!
Loving the touch wah combined with the mute. Absolute vibes! Thx Matt and have a happy new year!
thanks for the sharing , and happy funky new year
Matt, thanks for all your videos this year. I don't play any keyboards at all (I play bass) but I've seen you play live with Jamiroquai and bought the CD's. It's just a treat to say and hear you play, and to hear about your thoughts about your music, how you shape sound and make it funky. Thanks and all the best for 2021!
precious....so precious....thanks. FunkClav longa vita brevis. Be blessed.
I bought a Casio xw-p1 six years ago to play with as a guitar player coming out of music uni with "piano proficiency." Got some jams with a pentatonic driven rock group using only organ sim but zilch since.
Now this channel has me itching to go dust that thing off! It's going to be terrible, but I can't wait!
Best newly discovered to me channel on TH-cam!!
Great video. I must say your video on the left hand has made a huge difference in my playing and especially in my speed of learning.
Thanks,it was very interesting and fun to hear all this way to play and explore Clav. I learn lot of things and I understand better this instrument.
Hey Matt, thanks for your great channel! Always good content and sometimes I just enjoy the music you are playing. There are so many guys on TH-cam, providing a lot of bothering shows without or with only less input. In your case, it is you, your knowledge and your talent without any fake. A fantastic package. Keep everything as it is, because it is wonderful! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
Happy new year to you and your family.let’s hope for a better new year and get back to live music.
Killer stuff Matt! Some serious 70's car chase stuff going on there. Love it!
Cheers for this Matt. I’ve been doing this all afternoon on my DX7, sounds so good 😂
Thanks for this, that was funky indeed! Hoping Jamiroquai will make another album and I'll be able to see you guys play live one day.🤞 Merry Christmas! 🎄💜
Thank you for doing this, it is incredibly kind. I'm very thankful for the videos you make and excited for the future musicians you inspire.
Clav is such a cool sound! Great brain dump on clav’s in general too!
Great overview and instruction! I really enjoyed this cohesive and super clear run through. Thanks for the inspiration and Happy New Year!
brilliant playing, I love your videos! Thank you for making them
Great feeling.. This few minutes are a great inspiration.. A way to think by a funky-mind to create song in a funky mode.. Thank u 4 sharing
So much insight into how certain sounds are created, never heard of this instrument tbh now I do ty!
This is the video I was waiting for my entire life :-) Thanks for sharing your golden knowledge!!!
This is amazing. Mate I am so happy I can hear what you have to say. Keep it up
Love your clav demo. I still have a Hohner D6 from 79 but it’s long overdue fo an overhaul now. It’s not the same groove playing on a synth. Glad I found your channel. ❤️
Would love to see a tutorial on some of your ‘go to’ clav riffs! Clav has been kinda tricky for me to figure out on the fly.
As a player of historical keyboards this is interesting to me, as it derives from the clavichord, an instrument used for centuries besides the harpsichord. An instrument with a very soft tone, but afaik the same sort of mechanics like the clavinet!
Near identical in fact, the only difference is the clavinet is always fretted and doesn't have the same ability to play expressive techniques like vibrato
Worth checking out the Quilcom Sim Clav vst which simulates the original clavichord and clavinet. The real thing is better but takes up more room and bank balance.
thanks Matt you've always been an enormous source of good vibes and inspiration! after watching just half of your video I got to the piano and I can't stop playing funky riffs! All new and shiny thanks to your clear explanations that always get to the point! Happy new year!
